Advantages: Danny Devito and Billy Crystal are superb Disadvantages: none that I can think of
Switching on the tv a couple of nights ago I came across this film just as it was about to start, considering I had nothing better to do I decided to sit back and watch. To my very pleasant surprise it turned out to be a black comedy starring the brilliant Danny Devito and Billy Crystal. I watched the whole thing and loved it so much I bought the DVD as it was on offer.
Story : Larry ( Billy crystal ) is an author suffering from writers block, this ... ...Mulgrew ) who has not only left him but published his bestselling book in her name and therefore taking all the glory and money. Meanwhile Owen ( Devito ) is an average Joe still living with his mother from hell ( Anne Ramsay ). He signs up for a book writing class which is taught by Larry. Desperate for Larry to read his piece Owen puts it on top of every new pile of class work however Larry ignores it. Needless to say Owen starts following Larry ...

...these is an attempt to throw her from a train. Hence the title.
De Vito however has a volte-face and decides that he cannot live without his mum. However, Crystal has finally found inspiration and goes on to write a thriller called ‘Throw Momma From The Train’. His former pupils seem to be successful and he hopes to emulate them. Our friend mentioned at the start has a best seller with his copulation coffee table book.
De Vito turns ... ...also called, you guessed it, ‘Throw Momma From The Train’. Crystal has a fit and tries to strangle De Vito. He stops though when he realises that De Vito’s tome is only a children’s pop-up book and not the thriller he assumed it was. And so everyone lives happily ever after.
A good film, plenty of slapstick and verbal laughs. ...

Throw Momma From The Train is an outstanding film with exemplary cast performances. It stars Billy Crystal (When Harry Met Sally, Analyze That) as Larry Donner a writing tutor for adults; his own personal writing career was not doing very well since his wife stole his book ideas. His class all are pretty much no hopers and have peculiar ideas for there books. And one of his students is Owen Lift (played by co-star and Director; Danny DeVito - Twins, ... ...it; he was going to Throw Momma From The Train.
Near the end of the film; we find out that Larry has finally been inspired to do a book and when Owen comes over, Larry had just finished.
Owen too has news, he's written a book about the past months which the film is set. This is when Larry starts strangling Owen as that is what his book is based. I'll leave it there and to find out the ending you must see the film. Overall I would say an exceptionally ...

This is a typical 1980s back comedy, and as entertaining as any of its genre, depending on how you like this kind of thing. I found it watchable, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to see it again. Kate Mulgrew's part in the film is minor, as Billy Crystal's character's ex-wife. He is a writer, struggling, but she has just published a novel and struck it rich. The problem is that he claims she stole the whole thing from him. We see her on his ... ...he is filled with jealousy and agression, basically ends up wishing her dead. Long story short the film spoofs Hitchcock, and Crystal and DeVito (whose charater wants his abusive, cranky old mother dead) fall into a misunderstanding about a you-do-my-murder, I'll-do-yours scenario. Nobody dies, of course, and everything works out wonderfully in the end. Kate's portrayal of the bitch ex-wife is perfect, but so small is her part that we don't really ...
