...last Saturday night. I saw this film on teletext on BBC2, had a look on ITV's film section to read a summary of what to expect and thought 'oh well, we might as well watch it'. How pleasantly surprised I was!
The film's plot covers the usual subject that is quite abundant in our society nowadays. It starts with two people getting married, the man finds his now wife has been cheating on him all the while with his best man (poor sod, he hasn't been ... ...of fulfillment and elevating surprise. This is exactly how I felt about this film. Though the subject matter is not something that would appeal to me instantaneously, I was left feeling slightly sad for the characters portrayed, yet had many a laugh in between not to render the film a weepy experience.
The individual acting was excellent by a very able cast, all British, I must add, and including Cathy buerk, Dougray Scott and Jennifer Ehle. However, ...

Advantages: Wonderful acting and a great soundtrack Disadvantages: Unlikely storyline
...frankly not credible. This is a romance with an edge: OK so there are break-ups aplenty but there is also relly loneliness and pain and these aspects prevent "This Year's Love" from being yet another sugar-coated love story. This film's characters know that life is not as easy as the films make it look.
The film's triumph is the characterisation; while the tangled web of relationships is scarcely credible, the characters certainly are. Despite the ... ...- it's all too much. This aspect made me want to scream!!
My favourite part of the film is undoubtedly the music, namely the David Gray tracks. Kathy Burke's character, Mary, is a backing singer in a band led by David Gray (although he is not named and has no lines) and several tracks are performed in the gig scenes. The laid back music of David Gray is perfect for the smoky club and Kathy Burke proves that she has a decent voice.
