Advantages: Great story, great scenery, great performances Disadvantages: A bit too lovely
MANN-CHIS-TAH!!!
If you've ever spent any time at all there you'll understand exactly what the title means - to be a Man City fan - a simple, innocent, masochistic, naive Blue - in a City like that, where all the brains get theirselves down to Old Trafford, where the prawn sucking, bloated, arrogant, smug bastard Big Nobs turn out, is to know true Purgatory - ever the dog end, left over eating underdogs among their affluent richer relations.
A ... ...very early in life, born to expect little and receive even less - they may be downtrodden and dismal losers, but they dream of glory, of one day pitting themselves as equals, as once they did in the days of Bell, Lee, Summerbee and Marsh when they were Up There, mixing it with the biggest of the big boys, back then when United were perennial under-achievers, when their magical triumvirate of Law, Best and Charlton couldn't win a corner let alone ...

Advantages: Feel-good film! Disadvantages: Sometimes floats a little close to unreality
...sharp and relevant. Oh, and there's a love interest for Jimmy too - the beautiful new girl Sara, as much of an outsider as him, but comfortable with it... I liked this movie a lot - it floats perilously close to unreality at times but somehow manages to stay rooted firmly enough in today and its' very northern English heritage to make watching it an inspiring and very funny experience. The acting is faultless and McKenzie's debut deserves to be followed ...

I've always been highly sceptical about football movies. Most of them are terrible. This is the best I've ever seen - and it ranks alongside all the best British movies of the past.
Yeah, it's a story of love, romance, and football dreams that's been done a million times before, yeah the ending is predictable, but this is the most genuinely heart warming film I've seen in a long, long time.
The football storyline is pretty basic. If anyone out ... ...remember a story called Billy's Boots, where a young lad got given some magic boots and became a kind of Paul Gascoigne on the football pitch. This is the same, and does make football side somewhat predictable, yet still compelling enough.
It's the things that go beyond the football which make this such a great feel-good movie. Aside from Jimmy overcoming the bullies and going on to greatness, there are so many other elements. The twists and turns ...

I have just hired the film "There's only one Jimmy Grimble" and I must say that I had a very enjoyable evening. It's light-hearted and a bit on the predictable side but all in all makes pleasant viewing.
Jimmy Grimble is a small kid who supports Man City and gets regularly bullied by the bigger school kids who just happen to be Man Utd fans. He and his mum live in a council flat and football is Jimmy's life. One day when he is trying to escape his ... ...witch-like) and she gives him a pair of "magic football boots". The bullies steal Jimmy's football boots so he is forced to use the one's that the old lady gave him which have surprising results.
Jimmy decides to try out for the School football team which has a very apathetic coach (played by Robert Carlyle). The reason for the coach's apathy is revealed later in the film. The Under 16's Schools Cup gets underway and Jimmy starts off as Sub but ...

Advantages: Truly a happy-go-lucky film. Very entertaining. Excellent acting on all counts, and top music. Disadvantages: We've seen it all before. Very predictable, and quite cliched as well.
...a decent boyfriend.
Sadly, there's nothing immediately original about "There's Only One Jimmy Grimble". We've seen it all hundreds of times before, and it's a shame. British cinema, that once dared to be different and exciting (Trainspotting, A Taste Of Honey) is now bland, and runs to a set formula. "There's Only One Jimmy Grimble" is full of cliches, and it took no Einsteing to realise where the two-dimensional plot was going to take us next. ... ...the next Hollywood.
That said however, "There's Only One Jimmy Grimble" is thoroughly entertaining, and will keep you amused for the full duration. The music and editing is top notch, and the humour is (nearly) always spot on.
Robert Carlyle has now proved himelf as the multi-talented performer that he is, slipping just as seemlessly into the role of football coach as he did into drunken lout, down and out worker, or frenchman out with a vengeance.

Jimmy Grimble. This new British film is released on 25th August. I was sent a special preview ticket and watched it this morning. It’s a pleasant coming-of-age comedy drama about a lad called Jimmy Grimble who lives in Manchester and loves football. The film follows his progress from bullied, girl-shy youngster via a “magic” pair of boots given to him by a strange old lady, to his crowning glory – scoring two goals in the Final of the Schools’ Cup ...

Advantages: Feel good factor... Disadvantages: Fairly predictable, convoluted plot...
I went to see 'There's only one Jimmy Grimble' recently and have to say that I was somewhat underwhelmed by the whole thing. The plot revolves around Jimmy's inability to play football while being watched that is until he happens upon a pair of magic boots. The result is that Jimmy leads his school in to schoolboy finals, where he finds out whether his new found talent is thanks to the boots or whether it's him...!?
Robert Carlyle is surprisingly ...

When I first saw this film, I thought oh my god wow what an excellent film, and I went straight out to the shops and bought it.
This is a definate must see for everyone, whether you are into football or not! Whether you support Man Utd or Man City or not! It has an excellent storyline about a boy (Jimmy) who takes to believe an old lady about some magic boots, until he discovers that they are not magic at all - it's his feet that are special.

The best films are made in the north.
There’s only one Jimmy Grimble
Another great northern film along the lines of ‘Kes’ and ‘Gregory’s Girl’.
Perhaps it’s because I’m from the north that I can relate to this type of film.
There’s only one Jimmy Grimble is an amusing tale of adolescence set in the north of England starring Robert Carlyle.
Fifteen year old schoolboy played by Lewis McKenzie ... ...if front of other people his confidence and co-ordination desert him.
But life starts to change when a homeless woman gives him a tatty pair of football boots that used to belong to famous footballer Robbie Brewer.
Great entertainment and a film that makes you feel at home.
A great video to rent. ...
