Advantages: A wonderful fantasy adventure for all ages a family favourite Disadvantages: only a disadvantage to those that don't like musicals
~~ The Wizard of Oz ~~
Still going through my collection of musicals and I have quite a few more yet to review; I came across one of my all time favourites The Wizard of Oz. So here goes as I share my thoughts, trivia and description of a timeless classic which is nearly 70 yrs old and still enjoyed by young and old today.
~~ The Film ~~
The film opens in Sepia and we see Dorothy and Toto running down the dirt track under starry skies to her Aunty ... ...gets shooed off out of the way as they are busy. As Dorothy reflects she slips easily into song with Somewhere Over the Rainbow, we move on and get introduced to the three farmhands Hunk, Zeke and Hickory, you also get to see in them the characters that we later grow to love throughout the film. Miss Gulch arrives at the farm and takes Toto off to be destroyed for nearly biting her; well can you blame him the evil woman, Dorothy runs off to her room ...

The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Somewhere over the rainbow
way up high,
there's a land that I heard of
once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow
skies are blue,
and the dreams that you dare to dream
really do come true.
A wicked and loveless old woman, Miss Almira Gulch, is determined to have Dorothy's beloved dog, Toto, destroyed and due to her high standing in the community she manages to obtain a Sheriff's warrant permitting her to take poor ... ...no option but to honour the order. Dorothy is utterly distraught and running to her bedroom she collapses onto her bed, sobbing uncontrollably.

Advantages: Wonderful classic family film, great to sing along to, magical and bubbly Disadvantages: May be a little too old fashioned for some
After seeing the musical Wicked on Broadway in New York, and asking my husband if he enjoyed it, he replied that it was good but he didn't have a clue what the hell was going on. I frowned and asked him if he'd seen The Wizard of Oz to which he replied 'er, no'. I could not believe it! As soon as we got home I pulled out the old and dusty video of the film and we began to watch it. The Wizard of Oz begins in black and white picture with Dorothy, ... ...and their house, up in the midst of a tornado, it takes her and lands in the town of Oz. The screen is suddenly filled with bright colours that match the bubbly and happy atmosphere of Oz. The small and shrieky munchkins quickly surround Dorothy telling her that her house landed on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, killing her, and celebrations are now in full flow. But all Dorothy wants is to get back to her little home in Kansas and the Good ...

Advantages: It's still good despite being 70 years old, entertaining for children and adults alike Disadvantages: None
...I instead decided to watch the Wizard of Oz, which I was delighted to see was playing on Channel Five. I hadn't seen it since I was a child, but remembered it being an excellent film so was fairly enthusiastic about seeing it again. Since 2009 marks the 70th anniversary of this famous film I thought it would also be interesting to see how well the film had stood the test of time as well as if I still enjoyed it as an adult. I'm assuming that most ... ...won't talk too much about the plot, but I will outline it briefly. The teenage Dorothy lives with her aunt and uncle in a small town in Kansas, with her little dog Toto as her best friend and main company. All is well until her dog bites the leg of evil Elmira Gulch, who threatens to take Toto away, so Dorothy runs away with him. A bizarre set of circumstances lead to a tornado threatening Dorothy's town, and she arrives at her house just in time ...

...a sleepless night weighing up the pros and cons between two major box office hits, ‘The Sound of Music’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Sad but true. Had I been a gambling man I think I would have come down on the side of ‘The Sound of Music’, that is until I purchased ‘The Wizard of Oz’ on DVD.
This timeless masterpiece of cinematography has enraptured generations of young and old children (plus those who ... ...didn’t realise how old.
The story, which I sure you all know, revolves around a young girl Dorothy (played excellently by Judy Garland), who in an attempt to save her little dog Toto gets caught up in a freak storm and is transported to the mystical and magical land of Oz.
In her attempts to find her way back to Kansas she meets a myriad of colourful characters, some who assist and others who attempt to relieve her of the magical ruby slippers.

Advantages: A Timeless Classic Disadvantages: A Few Scary Characters For Young Children
...had just invaded Poland and the Second War World had begun, it was an event that would change the World, as we knew it forever. Yet across the other side of the Globe, a different kind of change was taking place. This was a much more peaceful event of the cinematic kind. I am talking about the launch of a film called the Wizard of Oz.
This film has stood the test of time and it has established itself as a timeless classic. It is a film that I have ... ...would just have not been the same without it on TV.
During a recent dash around my local Sainsbury's imagine my surprise when I spotted a DVD of the very same film in a bargain bin for just £6. I could hardly contain my excitement as I exchanged the Chicken I was planning to have for my meal, and swapped it for the aforementioned masterpiece. Well OK, I may be exaggerating a little bit here, but suffice to say I did add the DVD to my trolley.

The Christmas before last, my daughter was in the local Musical Society’s production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Appearing as both a ‘Principal Dancer’ and ‘speaking Munchkin number 1’, she of course stole the show from my point of view and her three lines will forever be etched on my memory. It was a wonderful production, which ran for 12 nights to mostly packed audiences in a tiny provincial 120 seat theatre. ... ...well being as they left the theatre. I was of course familiar with The Wizard of Oz story before my daughter appeared in the show but surprisingly enough, perhaps the only person in the western world, I had never actually seen the film. All my knowledge of it seemed to be gleaned second hand, from excerpts on the TV or radio, or familiar phrases or songs frequently being aired, so as my daughter’s rehearsals were about to start, we bought the ...

Advantages: great film for its time, kids will love it. Disadvantages: witch a bit scary!!
The wizard of oz always brings back fond memories of my childhood, I would love this when it came on the tv and when I saw it on sale at hmv for £3.99 so I decided to buy it for my daughter for her birthday. This is such a good musical film for it's time. The film is based on a series of books by L Frank Baum, and the main star is Judy Garland ( and toto the dog )!! The film starts off in black and white as you see Dorothy's (Judy Garland) home in ... ...be taken away from her. The story then brings a dramatic change as a cyclone hits her home and ends up taking her to the land of oz. The screen is then no longer black and white, but is full of life and bright colour. When Dorothy's house lands in oz, it happens to land on one of the wicked witches and kills her and Dorothy then inherits the witches magical ruby slippers, but the other wicked witch of the west is angered and wants revenge on Dorothy. ...

The Wizard Of Oz, which was made before the Second World War and stars Judy Garland as the heroine Dorothy, is one of the most famous films of all time. I'm sure that no one who hasn't been stuck somewhere on the North Pole for the last 70 years would have failed to have come across it in one way or another, but if there are seriously any of you out there who fall into this class (and if so, how come you're reading this, you loon?) I'll just recap.

It's a good job the colour has been fixed anyway because otherwise we wouldn't know that they're ruby slippers and that Dot has to take the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City (somehow it wouldn''t seem ...
