Advantages: Great TV Disadvantages: The worst of the five series
The BBC`s rather bold policy of showing five series of The Wire back-to-back during the spring and summer evenings is very welcome as it annoying, and certainly all rather frantic if you want to keep up, video tapes piling up by our TVs as the excellent American cop series goes out at that post Newsnight, BBC2, 11:15pm weekday slot. It's a complete mystery why they didn't put it on the 9 pm weekday slot to build its popularity and so drag it out ... ...Series one reflected the Black American drug culture of the City of Baltimore, through the eyes of the police, the legislature, the local politicians and the black criminal underclass themselves, their methods not that different from the good guys in getting the job done, whoever the good guys are, promotion and self embellishment the order of the day. The idea of The Wire is to follow the same case through all the series, five so far, and its resolution, ...

Advantages: Written beautifully! Disadvantages: none
I was skeptical of The Wire at first. Why did/does everyone rave about it so much? I watched it and i understood why. The Wire isn't just a cop and drug dealers drama, its a deep and analitical view of modern life. The cast also possess these human qualities, unlike most shows where characters have to stay 'in character' otherwise they don't seem like themselves at all. But, what this does is make them seem somewhat 2-D and bleak. In The Wire, the characters are stretched to the point where utter ...

Advantages: script, detail, drama Disadvantages: hard to follow street talk
...of focus from concentrating on the street corners to the docks and it's all the better for it. The story still revolves around drugs but wraps in town hall corruption, union desperation and the breakdown of a city built around a failing industry. I'm back to zavvi now to get series three on dvd, this really is amazing stuff.
The dvd is 24 episodes long and every episode is dense in detail and drama. Some elements of the plot are real slow burners ... ...was on tv you'd forget the nuances if you had to wait a week to see the next episode. There are many stand out performances, just be prepared to put the commitment in and it'll be worth it - even if it did need to be watched with subtitles on sometimes due to the realism of the street talk of the drug dealers! ...
