Romantic Comedy

Advantages: good music
Disadvantages: slow

...comedy, it is set in the 1980s. The Wedding Singer Robbie Hart played by Adam Sandler is jilted at the alter and his dreams of married bliss are shattered. Luckily he meets waitress Julie played by Drew Barrymore and as he helps her prepare for her wedding to her sleazebag boyfriend (Matthew Glave)he slowly starts to fall in love. The music is very good and is one of the highlights in this very ordinary romantic film ...

Advantages: Amusing nostalgia for 80s children
Disadvantages: It's all slightly predictable

...a multiplicity of references to the decade. In short, if you're not between 25 & 35, the chances are that this is going to be just another RomCom. Adam Sandler has made a name for himself (the charitable way of saying typecast!) playing slightly kooky, maybe a little simple, characters that charm those around him and make him very likeable. Two other films in which he plays exactly the same part are Happy Gilmour and The Waterboy, so if you liked ...
...for with The Wedding Singer. The basic plot line is thus: Sandler plays Robbie Hart, a singer in a local band, which basically only plays at weddings, hence the title. He is engaged to be married. Barrymore plays Julia, also engaged, to a self-centred bond trader, who is also serially unfaithful. She's a waitress in the local hall which hosts most of the weddings at which Sandler sings. Already we know which way this is going! Robbie's fiancée does ...

...is a wedding singer in the 1980s who develops a passion for Drew Barrymore. The film is based around his attempts to woo her and to get her away from her awful jock boyfriend who is seeing other women and intends to continue after he is married to Barrymore. [Long sentence.] Of course we know in real life that she would in fact go for the jock and not the wedding singer. But hey, this is a feel good film and also helps to convince us that maybe ...
...me comes at the beginning. Steve Buscemi makes an all too brief appearance as the brother of man at whose wedding Sandler is playing. The very inebriated Buscemi decides to take the stage and lament the fact that his brother is the family favourite. The brother is however reminded of the visit they both had to some prostitutes which of course does not go down too well with the assembly. Buscemi proceeds to take and guitar, which he plays very badly ...

A God awful parody of 1985

...may aswell have just transplanted the whole cast of Neighbours into this film because the acting was atrocious. Adam Sandler just looked stupid, I dont know if he was meant to be like that but he looked pretty dopey to me! Drew Barrymore’s acting skills seem not to have advanced since E.T. - hey, I wonder if that’s why they killed her off in the first 5 minutes of Scream! It was truly awful. If you like 80's music then ok, you might find it bearable, ...

...in mid 1980's New Jersey. The film starts when he meets a young waitress (Drew Barrymore). They get on really well, however, romance is not on they’re minds as they are concentrating on their pending marriages to less appealing fiancés. They then predictably find out that they really love each other, however, due to some typically Hollywood coincidences you wonder if they’ll ever get together. ...the love story is very cheesy, however, this is partly the point of the film. If you focus on the comedy, which while sporadic is occasionally hilarious, the film is enjoyable. There are some great scenes, Robbie singing "Love Stinks" at a wedding and singing his soulful incomplete love song about his ex-fiancé to Julia and a show-stopping drunk act by Steve Buscemi. Overall, I would say this is an enjoyable film which takes no thinking, but don’t ...

Great Cheese

Advantages: funny, original, family-friendly, good leads
Disadvantages: none

When this came out at the flicks I could think of many reasons not to go and see it. I couldn't remember the 1980s that well (too young!) and love films weren't really my bag. But it came on while I was on a plane returning from holiday this summer. I have to say it almost immediately entered into my top movie rankings. As I said, normally I don't go for this sort of thing, but the Wedding Singer is so well made that it transcends the kitsch image ...

Talk about cheesy, funny as hell though

Advantages: funny, easy storyline
Disadvantages: can get cheesy

Adam Sadler starring as the wedding singer, who surprisingly enough sings at weddings, has a dilema on his hands when he is due to get married, but gets stood up! This is when he starts to get to know Drew Barrymore(also stars in Charlie's Angles)and they get both rather friendly. With brief appearences from the guy out of Con Air(not Nicholas Cage)makes the film even more entertaining! With cheesy parts and funny parts, this film on the whole ...

A feelgood film

Advantages: good music, characterisation
Disadvantages: plot loses it a bit towards the end

The Wedding Singer was the film that launched Adam Sandler's career - but after the Waterboy don't let that put you off. Set in 1985, it tells the story of Robbie Hart, who makes his living singing at weddings. He meets Julia (Drew Barrymore) who is a waitress at the same events. They are both engaged to other people, but after Robbie's fiancee jilts him at the altar he begins to fall in love with Julia - but does she feel the same way? The Wedding ...
...some very funny moments. The 80s music and fashions are just as I remember them, and Julia's fiance Glen is funny as the guy who thinks he's Don Johnson. Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler turn in good performances as the main characters, but the subsidiary characters are less memorable. The film goes down hill in the last 20 minutes which is set in a plane on the way to Las Vegas, and features a cameo appearance by Billy Idol..... having said that, ...

Comedy A.S. Style!

Advantages: Funny
Disadvantages: Not quite funny enough in parts

The Wedding Singer has been labelled as a 'period romantic comedy'. This is technically true, as it is set in the 1980s, but anyone expecting a comical version of 'Pride and Prejudice' will be disappointed! In many ways, this is not a typical Adam Sandler movie either, with a large number of one-liners overshadowing his usual blend of character (and often physical) humour. Drew Barrymore also gives a great performance, although the clapping thing ...
...really gets on my nerves. The humour is great, and the soundtrack contains a number of memorable ? 80s hits. Brilliant. Sadly, the DVD isn't quite on par with the film, suffering from some brief pixellation during certain scenes. That said, it is still an improvement over the VHS version. The extras are fine, although a short documentary or something would have been appreciated. Overall, this is a very good film, although the disc itself lets it ...

...I would recommend first. The story is typical of romatic comedies, the pretty girl who can't see that the man she is going to marry is the wrong one and that Mr Right is already in the picture, if off to one side. The humour see-saws from very funny to very cheesy, and it sometimes seems a bit formulaic. Nevertheless if you like the best eighties music and can stand a bit of cheesiness it is well worth seeing. Advantages: Funny, happy, unique!
Disadvantages: None!

Adam Sandler is one of my favourite comedy actors of all time and he doesnt fail to impress in this film. Although this is now nearly ten years old and I have watched it too many times, it is still an excellent film. Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler have an excellent off screen relationship and this shows! (This is also shown in 50 first dates). Advantages:
Disadvantages:

The Wedding Singer is truelly wonderful. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore show that they really CAN act. The film is full of stars with minor parts like Steve Buscemi, John Lovitz and Billy Idol. This film is really funny and will have you laughing time and time again. You have to have a good sense of humour for this film and has a plot that you can actually say could happen in real life. It has a great soundtrack with hits from the 80's and Adam ...
