The Story:
Picture this - a world without guns, ... ...Somewhere completely cut off from the rest of the world - a "uptopia".
Many people dream of such a place, but few consider at what cost it could be achieved.
"The Village" is set in a cut off valley, founded by people who's families have fallen victim to the cruelty inflicted by western "civilisation". By today's standards the villagers may seem backwards, but their's is a world of innocence. They're children know nothing of the rest of the world ...

...some obscure reason I got the overwhelming impression that 'The Village' was supposed to be a Scary Movie! Don't get me wrong, it did make me jump, it is incredibly captivating, but it isn't a horror by any means! What it is is a very well shot, well directed and well acted movie.
Set anonymously outside Philadelphia is an isolated village deep in the middle of The Woods. The residents of the village have an uneasy but well established truce with ... ...in the woods and wear red capes (I personally couldn't help being reminded of 'little red ridding hood!'). The Village elders (William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver...) assure the younger villagers that as long as they don’t go into the woods ‘those we do not speak of’ will not enter the village. All is good... until the children start stumbling across skinned animals and the villagers get an unexpected visit in the middle of the night!
You're right! It ...

Advantages: You have to keep watching just to find out the twist Disadvantages: Always waiting for the spectacular movie moment, and it never comes.
The village is a film directed by M Night Shyamalan, who also directed the hit horror movie, The Sixth Sense. This was
what first attracted me to this film after speaking about it with a colleague. This film was one that was praised as being a masterpiece and being a great film to watch. I was looking forward to a great night in with a film that I could really get into, and one that would get me a little scared, but this was not the
case.

There have watchtowers looking out for these creatures that sometimes like to venture into the village where the inhabitants have to get into their houses and hide. Ivy is a blind girl who falls in love with Lucious and they plan to get married, but Ivy's brother (who is mentally ill) stabs her husband to be. Lucious is dying and the ...

The Village, written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan on a budget of 60 million dollars, was going to be a tough follow up for a director known for his twists and turns. As it turned out, there was a twist, but it was a rather low key one, and it was almost apparent from the start, though it is not without a small end revelation, that will surprise you.
This movie starts off really slowly, leading you into the lives of a group of villagers, who ... ...speak of'. A village where the colour red is not allowed, as it is the colour of evil. The Elders, who have set up and run the village, teach their children that the Towns outside their village is a bad place, and they must never cross into the woods to go there. They are not even allowed to speak about it. Although they mean well, the Elders keep the villagers there with legends about creatures that live in the woods. Those that will grudgingly ...

Advantages: Intriguing movie with a good twist. Disadvantages: The adverts and marketing suggested it was a different kind of movie entirely, in my opinion, so many will leave disappointed.
Having been overwhelmed by The Sixth Sense and utterly disappointed by Signs, I wasn't quite sure whether the fluttering in my stomach when I first saw a trailer for The Village was excitement or dismay.
However, been the cinema addict I am, I decided I had to go and risk being disappointed again, so I told my mum that that M. Night Shyababalabadoo man had made another movie and dragged her off to our local multiplex.
Staring at a magazine in the ... ...I realised that the director's name was still as unpronouncable as ever, so I felt that was a bad omen for the film in itself, as I skulked into the theatre and took my seat.
To my horror, my mum and I were the only ones in the theatre right up to a few minutes before the film started. Now, it was a Wednesday afternoon, but I still felt it was a bad sign that the movie was proving quite this unpopular.
The film started. Creepy, atmospheric music ...

Advantages: Shyamalan doesn't fail to impress Disadvantages: Sorry folks but this isn't a horror film
...at least some point or the other but is it as good as it seems? ........................................................
I saw this film not so long ago at the cinema with my boyfriend and saw it within the first weekend of it being released. Like everyone else i was really hyped up at the fact i was about to watch a good old horror film as i had previously seen the trailer to the film at the cinema as well as on the television.
When seeing this ... ...publicised the fact it was a 'horror film'. Within the trailer i saw these isolated people who live within a village that dare not cross the forbidden woods because of mysterious yet 'evil' creatures that live within the woods. To me this sounded really good as i love a good old horror movie with creatures killing people. As the trailer went on i learnt that the people who live within the village dare not associate with the creatures of the woods ...

...£20). It was end of the season sale and I picked up a film called "The Village" just to make up the numbers. It struck me as being some sort of clichéd horror film from the blurb on the cover and I didn't expect to be watching it in the very near future. But it was one of those DVDs that keep popping up every time I looked through my shelf of dozens of other unwatched movies. Well the other evening, it popped up again and I just put it in the machine ... ...the mood for thinking anyway, it would probably be an ideal film. As we got into the film, enter the monster, well, a glimpse of it. It was supposed to be scaring me but even my wife, who makes me jump out of my skin with her sudden screams in scary movies, remained silent all the way through. To say the film starts off slow is an understatement. And to say it's horror…. Well in a pantomime, maybe. In fact, I thought for the first hour it was bordering ...

...are slightly off centre from the real world. Everything looks as it does in ‘our’ world but it is one that is populated by the paranormal myths and creatures we all know about.
The ghosts of Sixth Sense, the superhuman of Unbreakable and the aliens of Signs all exist in this supernatural world, but are also plausible enough for the tension that Shyamalan builds up to succeed. I sometimes feel that his climaxes need work but there is no denying his ... ...his writing is the unexpected twist that he throws into the mix. This worked perfectly in Sixth Sense, as it was a surprising shock in the tail (okay it was blatantly obvious to the hardened filmgoer but was done very skilfully) from a director making his first major film. After the same kind of last scene twist in Unbreakable anyone who notices directors’ names find themselves looking for what could be the twist in successive films. This is the ...

...have a long-standing truce with the creatures that live in the surrounding woods - the villagers never enter the woods, not even to pass through, and the creatures never break through the borders to their valley. When a series of unfortunate events force the truce to be broken, the resulting chaos reveals a deeper truth that lies beneath the utopian community.
My Opinion:
M. Night Shyamalan upholds a sense of mystery about the "creatures" throughout ... ...what the mind can conjure is often far scarier than anything an SFX department can create. The creatures are always referred to as "those we do not speak of", and we do not fully see one of them until the last 10 minutes of the movie.
The story of the villagers that is weaved around the "creatures in the woods" idea, is an intensely emotional tale about endearingly innocent characters, who have chosen their secluded lifestyle through a desire for ...

Advantages: a scary film, very believable storyline, amazing acting Disadvantages: too scary for me, liked the twist but also didn't like it.
From the director of ‘Sixth Sense’, ‘Unbreakable’ and ‘Signs’M Night Shyamalan comes this psychological, creepy thriller with a twist that will shock. I heard before I went to see 6th sense that there was a twist and guessed the ending of it within the first 15 minutes. The Village is sooo much better, and as I didn’t know that there was a twist to the film, I didn’t even suspect one!! The story line is so well written- I don’t want to say too much ... ...can watch scary movies in the dark!!! Rated 12A, there are some genuinely creepy scenes but no goriness!
Visually it’s beautiful , the 1890’s costumes offer authenticity in abundance and the settings add some fine scenery to the proceedings. There’s great significant use of colour such as yellow and reds. If you want to find out more, then you have to watch the film.
I felt the twist was great because I wasn’t expecting it, but felt that the film ...

Advantages: Well shoot Disadvantages: Not scary, poor plot with weak twists
The village is the new film by Night Shyamalan who was the guy behind the brilliant Sixth Sense.
The film is set in a village that appears to be in civil war era US, this is no explicitly highlighted but there are no cars, machinery or computers and the costumes allude to this era. The film also has a fairly dark feel.
I was never really gripped by this film. There are several problems with it. Firstly the plot moves along very, very slowly. It ... ...happens. Another problem is that the dialogue doesn’t seem too good. The film is actually quite well shot. In fact I often felt like more attention was being paid to the way the camera would move than the dialogue or plot. There was also a lot of heavy and atmospheric music.
The actors are all fairly unoutstanding. There are no exceptional performances. This may be because the dialogue is not really well done and the characters are poorly developed. ...

This film may not fulfill the expectations of those who believe 'The Village' is going to be an action-packed, horror film, but to those who approach it with an open mind and those who appreciate the enigmatic and emotional.

...fashioned setting and of course the usual love interest between two of the characters (Phoenix and Howard). Like many of his other films, this is not short of twists and turns and it mostly relies on the suspense of the film rather than horror. The Village
Night M. Shyamalan’s tale The Village is played out in the small Pennsylvanian homestead of Covington at the turn of the last century. The story revolves around the uneasy truce that the townsfolk share with the creatures that inhabit the bordering woods.
Bryce Dallas Howard stars as Ivy Walker and Joaquin Phoenix is Lucius Hunt. They produce similarly stoical performances, proving that in this instance less is more. Oppressive mist hangs as though dead in the air whilst leafless trees sway in the wind.
James Newton Howard’s atmospheric score completes the portentous and eldritch ambience that is in the very fibre of the film. The horn and string arrangements keep hearts fluttering through the quieter moments until the pounding drums and thundering bass almost induce cardiac ...
