Advantages: Best disaster movie of the last century Disadvantages: Some very cheesy lines
It's the launch party for the newly constructed, 138 storey skyscraper in the centre of San Francisco, supposedly the world's tallest skyscraper. With loads of prominent dignitaries and celebrities invited to the gala celebration, it is going to be a night to remember as they party on the 135th floor. After some wring short circuits in one of the systems, architect Doug Roberts believes that the skyscraper has not been built to his stringent specifications ... ...attempt to bring the development in under budget. As the party gets into full swing, a fire breaks out on the 81st floor, caused by more dodgy wiring, and the fire service are called. The fire quickly spreads and although the firemen do their best to stop it, they are pretty helpless 81 floors above the ground. As more fires start appearing, the party goers find themselves trapped and helpless in the penthouse. Now it's up to the chief of the fire ...

Advantages: Lots of stars in their hey-days, easy to follow plot Disadvantages: Drags in some places and these days, seems really scary!
...and "The Glass Inferno". The film works I think because we don't know who will survive except for that fact that Steve McQueen and Paul Newman will obviously get out! This film has been on TV numerous times and even in these days of real disaster, it's still an exciting film. It must have looked superb on the big screen. It's made by the same person who made "The Poseidon Adventure" - Irwin Allen.
The basic plot of what I think is the ultimate disaster ... ...hotel suites. Guests in the world's biggest skyscraper get trapped at the top of the building when a fire breaks out near the lower floors. The fire is caused by cheap electrical wiring and bad construction. We follow guests as they try and make their way down lifts and stairs, while smoke and explosions get in the way. As with most films of this nature, "The Towering Inferno" has an all-star cast, an arrogant official who ignores all the basic safety ...

Advantages: the best disaster movie ever Disadvantages: there are none (in my opinion)
The Towering Inferno (cert 15 on DVD cos of inclusion of previously deleted scenes), directed by Irwin Allen and John Guillerman. I know it's a bit sad but this is my favourite film of all time, it's a disaster movie classic. This 1974 film based on books "The Tower" by Richard Martin Stern and "The Glass Inferno" by Thomas N Scortia, has it all - drama, action, romance, original special effects, daring stunts and OJ Simpson.
Very brief synopsis
... ...built on the cheap
grand opening night lots of people partying on the top floors
electrical fault on lower floors
FIRE!!!!!!!
Any film that has both Steve McQueen and Paul Newman starring is bound to be worth watching. This film contains all the stereotypical characters required for any disaster movie, there is the brave fire chief (McQueen), heroic but tortured architect (Newman), kind hearted gentleman (Fred Astaire), the snivelling waster ...

(+) Fast pacy spy adventure, with great music and some equally great stunts. (-) Stunts a bit far fetched - but you expect that with this sort of film.
