Advantages: Highly entertaining cinema Disadvantages: Not a thing
...an earlier heist movie of the same name from 1968 that starred the late, great Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. Given the large amount of extremely poor remakes that have hit the cinema screens recently this movie was surprisingly good, possibly because it stuck fairly closely to the story and script of the 1968 version, which was itself excellent.
~ ~ To be totally honest I don’t recall the original 1968 version that well, as I watched it in the ... ...Steve McQueen movies) which is the reason I had avoided watching this remake for so long, studiously avoiding it on the shelves of the local video shop and in the Sky Movie listings. But a cold, wet December evening and a dearth of anything else decent to watch on the gogglebox led me to view it for the first time during the past week. I’m very glad I did. Isn’t it a real bonus when you begin to watch a movie with no real expectations of it being ...

...John Reynolds the thomas crown affair (dvd)
i can't say that i'm a big fan of remakes, especially when the original film doesn't really demand one. There are a few exceptions around - off the top of my head (and looking at my video collection behind me), I can name examples of both good and bad - The Birdcage pretty much improves upon the original (called 'La Cage aux Folles and not really known outside of France) and the mediocre Gone in 60 Seconds ... ...uneccessary.
The Thomas Crown Affair remake is, I'm happy to say, an improvement over the original film (also of the same name). Orginally starring in the main roles were Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway (the millionaire Thomas Crown and insurance specialist Catherine Banning respectively); in the remake we have Pierce Brosnan and the very lovely Rene Russo being directed by the very competent director of Die Hard, John McTiernen.
Most people will ...

...want to me to spoil the story line for you, then read the first six paragraphs only.
Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan) plays the part of a self-made billionaire who seems to be in search for more challenge in his life and we seem him making silly bets on a game of golf with impossible odds, resulting in him losing $100,000. We also seem him wreck an expensive yacht, yet he seems totally un-phased by it!
The film is largely centred around New York’s ... ...the same spot admiring one of the less favoured paintings. This turns about to be a ploy to detract from the fact that he is scheming up a way to steal $100 million Monet which is also in the same gallery and this is all unbeknown to the viewer at this stage.
We see cameo appearances from Thomas’s psychologist (Faye Dunaway) throughout the film, which appears to be somewhat of pointless role apart from the fact that Thomas has an unhealthy ...

Sometimes you have to question the reason why some film's are re-made, most can never live up to the original but some make a good attempt and take advantage of the changes in society and cinema to make them worthwhile. The Thomas Crown Affair is one of those re-makes that actually is quite decent. The reason it works is mainly because the two leads are both in the same age range and have some very heated sexual chemistry between them. Advantages: A fun film with a great soundtrack and superb remake Disadvantages: Can get a bit dull at times
...film when I looked at the box, but was eventually persuaded to watch it by my mum and I actually really enjoyed this film and see it as one of my favourite films! I am normally into more action or war type films, but this is nothing like this and is very different to the norm for me but yet still a great film and worth a watch.
This film is actually a remake from the original in 1968 and is about Thomas Crown - a rich billionaire who owns a massive ... ...on a golf swing for the fun of it. These are still not enough of a challenge for him - so he decides to steal a famous painting by Monet from this art gallery.
Crown, who is played very well by Pierce Brosnan, is chased in some sort of game of 'cat and mouse' by a woman hired by the insurance company to solve the crime. Rene Russo plays Banning the detective and gives Crown exactly what he wants - excitement and a challenge!
The film is great to ...

...a remake One of the hardest things for a filmmaker to do is to redo somebody else’s work. You either get slaughtered for changing the film too much or for making a shot for shot remake (Psycho 1999 anyone!) Fortunately the original Thomas Crown was not an all time classic so most of the audience won't have seen the original to compare. The story Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan) is a multi-billionaire businessman who is bored of buying up all the ... ...steel a $100M painting from the gallery. Rene Russo is employed by the insurance company who don't want to have to pay out for the lost painting. The heist is taken care of right at the beginning of the film leaving the rest of the film to build the relationship between the two main characters. The main problem with a film like this is that you know 'who dun it' before you watch the film and it is also very obvious from the beginning that Crown won't ...

...I watched again and again the (new) Thomas Crown Affair, I realize I came to enjoy it more and more. Dense entertainment: action, tumultuous and steamy romance, inspired direction from McTiernan ("Die Hard", "The Hunt for Red October"), and appropriate musical score. Good performances from Brosnan, Russo and Leary. A tour-de-force for Rene Russo ("tougher" in her portrayal of the insurance agent than Faye Dunaway in the original affair), considering ... ...unlike the character she plays in this movie (see Russo's press and TV interviews). Kudos for Pierce Brosnan - much better and diversified delivery here than in all his three James Bond impersonations. (The wonder of the last 007, "The World Is Not Enough", is Sophie Marceau - not just good looking, but a good actress !)
No, I am not saying we should ever go out steal Manet, Monet, Degas, ... as a passe-temps, but, we do like this film because no ...

Advantages: A fine story, much improved and rounded from the original. Disadvantages: Few and far between
Despite the endless rantings of the traditionists who continually maintain that everything was better when they were young, and all things are best the first time around, this remake definately improves on the old Steve McQueen classic.
Having watched the 1999 version in the cinema and having been most impressed, I recently watched the original starring Steve McQueen on TV. It was clearly good in its time but it appeared to have definately been ... ...rent the remake to give it a second viewing.
The story line revolved around, unsurprisingly, Thomas Crown, played by Pierce Brosnan. He is a ludicrously wealthy businessman who believes that rules are for breaking and life is for living. When he decides to steel a Monet from the New York Museum, he seems certain to get away with it, as the police are somewhat clueless, and even less interested. However, when the insurance company appoints Rene Russo ...

...I was probably one of the privelidged first few [thousand]! people to see this fantastic movie. No, I was not asked to attend the star studded premiere [shame though], I collected those little tokens in one of the National newspapers, and went to see it for free, a week before it came out on general release.
Being a fan of Pierce Brosnan, I thought that even if the film was crap, it wouldn't be a total waste of time, as at least I'd have the lovely ... ...quite happy to go for the same reason, before you ask, no he doesn't fancy Pierce, but Rene Russo [of Lethal Weapon fame] is certainly easy on the eye.
As it turned out, the film was one of the best I have ever seen, and is now a favourite in my own video collection. It's clever, stylish & oh so sexy.

...have a quick look at The Plot**
A Monet is elaborately stolen from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Insurance investigator Catherine Banning (Rene Russo) thinks that the bunch of unshaven Romanians caught by the police could not have pulled off such a crime and focuses her attention on wealthy banker Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan). Crown has stolen the painting for kicks and the two, clearly fancying each other, engage in a battle of wits. ... ...commit for fear of spoiling the fun. The net closes on Crown but does Catherine want to arrest him or f*** him? The ending is clever and satisfying, no need to spoil it. Let's just say everyone is happy.
**What about the actors?**
Tellingly, Brosnan produced this film and shows why he's an average actor at best, not straying an inch from his smug, give 'em a wink and a one-liner Bond persona. I don't dislike the guy but everyone seems to think ...

...good performance of roles. Even the movie is remake from 70's movie but what we see is still relevance with present settings. The story is simple, about the man who has everything what everyone wants. Money, occupation, luxurious, what else, he got everything in this world. But there something deep inside him is his naughty side that called him to be an adventurer in the danger way. Say about stealing paint in the museum of art. And that's what happened, ... ...of course, Pierce Brosnan, ya, the leading role. Played the role as if he is Thomas Crown himself. It's livingly with him. This movie is pure entertaint us from the start to the end of it. I, myself not boringly to watch it over and over again. Not just enjoyable but also we are watching one of an excellent movie performance ever made. Maybe you have to find it your self to know that, so why don't you watching it as soon as you can. ...why, but Rene Russo plays the part in a very pouty way, which doesn't add anything for me. Taken on its own, this is a good film. The trouble, as far as I am concerned, is that they have taken the name of the 1968 original, and so they must expect comparisons to be made, and unfortunately, the film cannot stand up to that sort of comparison. Good though Brosnan and Russo are, they cannot hold a candle to Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. This film ...

Review of The Thomas Crown Affair (DVD)
Advantages: Super-smooth update of a classic movie, with plenty of neat surprises. Disadvantages: It trades on the Thomas Crown reputation, when it could have been a brand-new heist thriller all of its own.
Remakes......the refuge of the creatively bankrupt and those devoid of imagination. Perhaps. They come in many forms, yet an update of the classic 1968 Steve McQueen / Faye Dunaway crime caper with *that* chess game would not appear - on the the face of it at least - to be one of the most obvious or necessary choices. To its credit, this new version does not blithely replicate the original frame by frame. Having said that, the basic premise and plot ... ...extra style and ingenuity, despite the obvious lack of that definitive 60s chic. The opening sequences of 1999's model may lack the original's arresting intruige (in an ironic twist, the 1968 film's heist was more violent and threatening), yet where this reworking comes up trumps is in its pay-off scenes. By putting a new spin on the climax of the story, the conclusion becomes far more satisfying.
Brosnan takes a break from his 007 escapades to ...

To tell the truth I didn't have much hope in this film, the only reason I went to see it was because Pierce Brosnan was in it. It turned out to be one of the best films I have seen in a long time. I won't give too much away but there is a bit of a twist towards the
