Advantages: Scary, with suspense a plenty! Disadvantages: Somewhat disappointing ending, could have been better!
The Strangers is a movie by debut director Bryan Bertino, and has been released this year. Starring Liv Tyler (Armageddon, The Lord of the Rings) and Scott Speedman (Underworld, XXX), the movie is a violent thriller, which is supposedly inspired by true events, and has a UK 15 certificate rating.
A couple, Kirsten McKay (Liv Tyler) and James Hoyt (Scott Speedman), return from a wedding reception to the secluded Hoyt's family home, both upset from ... ...the couple sit down to discuss the row, they are both startled to hear a knock on the front door, in the early hours of the morning. As they open the door, a strange woman stands in the doorway, asking for a person, whom the couple have never heard of. They explain that the person doesn't live there, and the woman wanders off into the dark. Confused and a little startled, James sets off to get a pack of cigarettes for Kirsten.

Advantages: Has the basics of a good horror Disadvantages: Not scary enough!
The Strangers was released in 2008 and was written and directed by Bryan Bertino. This film had quite a lot of hype when it was released and I enjoy a good scary horror so was really looking forward to seeing this one. I must confess that I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to masks and anything that is clown or doll related when it comes to horror films so I was expecting to be scared witless by this film! My anticipation was short lived though as ... ...follows the couple James Hoyt (Scott Speedman) and Kristen McKay (Liv Tyler) starting fro when they arrive at James' fathers house where they plan to stay after attending a friends wedding reception. The scene is glum and there is definite tension between the couple as James decided to propose to Kristen at the reception but she declined. It is the middle of the night and the house is in the middle of no where when they hear a knock at the door. ...

The Strangers is the debut film from writer and director Brian Bertino, using the very simple scare of strangers who come ... ...gore to win their scares. The Strangers is a more classic horror film, using lots of tension and suspense in order to generate scares.
The story idea was based on a clever reverse of one of Brian Bertino's experiences as a child, when strangers came to his house asking if a certain person was home. Of course they were just doing this to see if anyone was home, and all the empty houses in the neighborhood had been burgled.

Bryan Bertino's debut feature The Strangers is an effectively grim, exceedingly well-made horror thriller. Wringing atmospheric tension out of the familiar set-up of a besieged young couple, the movie mixes pulse-pounding scenes of explicit menace with stalking scenarios more rooted in sustained dread The Strangers unfolds over a period of several hours, almost exclusively at night. After leaving a friend's wedding reception, Kristen McKay (Tyler) ... ...there. After politely responding in the negative, James and Kristen are later attacked by a trio of mysterious, masked strangers - two women and one man - who take an unarticulated psychosexual delight in toying with their intended victims. ...since it was released at the cinema but I never got round to watching it so when it came out on DVD I went out & bought it straight away. It was £12.99 at Asda, yes a little expensive but I was willing to pay that as I was expecting this to be a magnificent film, how wrong could I be! I don't know if it was just the fact that I had wanted to watch this film for so long that my expectations were too high or maybe it's just that this film was incredibly ... ...to a wedding & during the reception James had proposed to Kristen & she turned him down. The first half an hour is annoyingly filled with the 2 of them sulking around the house until there's a knock on the door in the early hours of the morning. As soon as I saw The Strangers advertised on TV I wanted to see it, it looked really good. Unfortunatly I missed my chance to go and see it at the Cinema, so I waited for it to come out on DVD and then bought it - and I'm glad I did!
The Strangers stars Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler being hunted in a remote holiday home by 3 strangers, liturally.
The cast for the film, which to me was new because I wasn't aware of any other films involving Scott ... ...great choice. Scott brought to the film the heroic figure, who loved his girlfriend and wanted to protect her, he was a strong and mesmorising character. Liv Tyler was excellent, really. She starts off in the film, as a sort of shy, quiet woman with a lot of things hidden, but as the film progresses towards the action part, she comes alive. Her screams were unforgetable, especially the one nearer the end which scared me quite a bit.

Advantages: A genuinely scary ride Disadvantages: A little graphic for my liking.
...racing! Spent most of the 70mins hiding behind a cushion!!
It opens giving away the end so isn't one of the usual guess the killer type of movies, the journey is the important aspect not the destination. Its an interesting career change for Liv Tyler and further solidifies Scott Speedman into Hollywood.
Of course, we've seen it all before (reminiscent of Vacancy, warring couple facing adversity together, realising how much they love each other) ... ...her on her own in the middle of the night after a stranger had already knocked on the door when there were no neighbours within screaming distance??
That aside, there are some genuine jump moments played against a haunting soundtrack. A must for any horror fans.
Like all films in this genre, leave your brain at the door and enjoy the ride!! ...

You'll like this if you like - edge of your seat horror
Plot - A couple retire back to a secluded woodland cottage after a night out. They have had a falling out but are about to put their differences aside when weird people start chapping on the door asking for a person who isnt there. The night gets even scarier and when weird things start happening around the house and when the car ... ...not often you can see the whole cinema jump, cringe and hold their breath simultaneously, but this film managed to do that. Although the 'baddies' are quite clear from the start, the idea that they are so blatant in their actions is one of the most scary things about this film. ...to say, when I saw the advert for this film I thought it was going to be a quite scary psychological horror film. I took it out from the library along with Final Destination 3 and watched them a few days after we took them out. I have to say that it's a good thing that my mum and I watched FD3 first because this film was so disappointing.
There really isn't much of a storyline to this film. I know it is based on a true story so they have to keep ... ...Liv Tyler's character didn't except the offer to get engaged. Why? It never shows you what happened so you don't know. It doesn't explain why the killers come to their house or anything, there just isn't any story. It's just boring. You have the stereotypical bits where you jump because a character appears out of nowhere, but that is the only thrill you feel in this whole film.
