Advantages: suspence filled, good acting Disadvantages: bit drawn out
...this film last nite for the first time in a while, it cost just £5.99 on DVD at my local music zone and what a bargain that turned out to be.
The film starts out very slowly but it all adds to the suspence as no matter who you are you will have heard of this film and how it constantly tops those film polls of the top 100 scariest films set in out of the way hotels..... and what have you.
The acting in this film is great especially Jack Nicholson ... ...dissapointed if you have read the book as although it is a great film that old saying the film is never as good as the book also applies here, although it does better than most.
Stanley Kubricks directing is also good but not sensational as there is not a lot you can do with the whole settings but the suspence he brings with the way the scenes are built up is in some instances border on masterful.
All in all the film was very enjoyable just like ...

...is brilliant. This is the best film EVER made in my opinion and Jack Nicholson's tranformation into an axe weilding maniac in the lonely deserted hotel is just brilliant. May Stephen King books that are made into films are, to put it bluntly, rubbish! This is one of the few exceptions. There are only about 4 or 5 characters in the film and all of them give outstanding performances.
If you want to be scared then this is the film to watch. If you ... ...windows before you go to the bed otherwise you'll be worrying all night that somebody is going to get you!
These days there aren't really that many horror films of any quality, they're all blood and gore. The phsycological one's like this are the best. They're the type that chew away at your brain and shock you when you are least expecting it. This film shocks! This film is the best film ever. Buy the video and watch it, you will not be disappointed! ...

Advantages: Compulsive viewing, dark, realistic, atmospheric Disadvantages: Not even remotely suitable for sensitive types or children
...might want to watch with the lights on, a friend close by and NOT just before you go to bed.
Yes, it's THAT good.
The film is based on the chilling book by Stephen King, and is far away the most disturbing horror novel I have ever read. I wouldn't have thought any film representation could have done the book justice, but thanks largely to the heroic efforts of Jack Nicholson, this one does.
The plot itself is moderately basic - a haunted hotel, ... ...a vulnerable mother. The way in which the hotel corrupts the fragile mental state of the boy's father is compulsive viewing, and his degeneration into madness is inevitable, obvious and still unsettling.
The acting is generally superb, the plot marvellous, the setting just right, the atmosphere spot on.
It's a must see, particularly if you've ever read the book. Just don't watch in the dark... ...

Advantages: origionally chilling Disadvantages: slightly drawn out in places
...is Jack Nicholson at portraying the insane? (Think 'Batman', 'One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest’) The Shining is no exception. Every time I watch this film I'm left thinking that maybe a part of Nicholson really is insane, his performance is that convincing. Coupled with the performances of his two co-stars, Shelly Duvall and Danny Lloyd, who was just 7 at the time, it really is hard to fault the acting in this film. The Shining happens to be one of ... ...yet this is not always the case. If you're into horrors and thrillers, this is a must see, if not, this may just seem like a long and disturbing piece of cinematography. The plot is taken from Stephen King's novel, 'The Shining'. However if you've read the book and are about to see the film, you may be in for a few surprises as Kubrick altered and edited many areas of the original story. *A Brief Synopsis:*
Jack Torrence, a struggling writer, takes ...

Advantages: You don't HAVE to watch it Disadvantages: The whole story
It had all the makings of a great horror classic, and the potential to be worthy of a place in any video collection, based on a book by a great author and directed by the late, great Kuberic, and some great actors to boot.
Sadly, like Stephen King's book, on which it was based, this film drags on for far too long with no point of interest, leaving you bored from 20 minutes in. When things do begin to happen they do so very slowly, and come across ... ...them all to die so the film will end.
Some good performances by all the cast then are wasted, since you find yourself not caring anyway. Perhaps condensed into a short story and equally short film there could be enough happening to fill the space between covers / opening and closing credits.
If you do have a lot of patience with this kind of thing, I would suggest getting hold of the book from your local libary. If you can get as far as half way, ...

The epitomy of normal family man going crazy and attacking his family. If that is what you like then you'll love this, there's an old woman in the bath, a random tricycle in the corridors and much more to make you question your own sanity. Make sure that bathroom door is well insured before buying!
A must have for every human.

Advantages: Great film! Disadvantages: Could have done with more extras
The Shining is possibly one of the most tense films (I think it's wrong to call is scary) ever made.
The story follows Jack Torrance (Nicholson), his wife Wendy and their young son Danny as they follow Jack to a new job at the Overlook Hotel.
The film is entirely set in this hotel where Jack is the caretaker while it is closed for the winter. While it is quiet Jack is meant to be writing a novel (He is an ex English teacher and recovering alcoholic) ... ...isolation of the hotel.
Much like The Exorcist I think it has lost a lot of its shock value for people brought up on a diet of modern 18 rated films.
That however doesn't stop it from being a classic.
From start to finish this film grips you. The twists and turns in it are great and it will keep you watching all the way though.
Although I love this film I was disappointed when I finally read the book and realised just how much Kubrick had changed ...

...it doesnt fail to do the job - scare the living daylights out of me. The beginning starts off a normal family going to live at the husbands work residence nothing sinister there, the middle sees a very different man who seems very screwed up, not the family man he started off as, and the end, well i will leave that for you to watch.
Jack Nicholson plays a fantastic part and how he manages to jump in and out of that particular roll is beyond me. ... ...as I am sitting here typing this review. This DVD has 40 minutes of Vivian Kubricks behind the scenes documentary "The making of the Shining". It also has interactive menus and Scene access and also has a trailer. This DVD is not for the faint hearted.

Advantages: A masterpiece Disadvantages: A disturbing movie
The Shining''is one of my favorite horror movies of all times. While Jack Torrance's madness increases, you stay more and more tense while the movie develops. And the movie really makes you scared in some scenes. Being the work of a perfectionist(Stanley Kubrick) and a plot by Stephen King, this movie who gave a lot of trouble and work to be ready,is a good option for everybody who is a horror genre's fan!
Jack Torrance got the job of caretaker ... ...and his family will be the only people in the hotel for a long while Danny, the little boy, is the one who sees things that no one else sees: he is the one who first sees the ghosts in the hotel and also sees what is about to happen in a near future. Danny is what we call to be ''the shinning'' as well as Halloram, the hotel's cook. But the hotel is full of bad spirits, and many of them are helping Jack to become crazy...
Jack Nicholson is great ...

Stephen Kings The Shining.
I have over the past couple of years watched various horror movies such as 'The Blair Witch' and 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' and these movies don't come close to 'The Shining'. This is the only horror movie I've watched which actually scared me,

The shining is a classic horror film, a must see for any horror fan. I'm don't tend to like many horror films because of the unreaslistc-ness of them, but The Shining is different. A simple storyline is made intriging, suspensful and exciting makes it stand out from any other.

...rolling as we swoop over the mountains to the Overlook Hotel. Scared? You will be. Watch this film on your own, with the lights out. Go on, I dare you. Some have criticised this Stanley Kubrick directed adaptation of the Stephen King novel. Personally, I think it's well worth a look. Kubrick is a top director and he twists horror conventions in this movie. The story, if you don't know, is about writer Jack Torrence and his family, who have moved ... ...look after it during the winter period. The hotel has a horrific past and soon strange things are going on. And Jack starts going a little loopy. Jack Nicholson gives a top Jack Nicholson performance as the writer who goes bonkers. Shelly Duvall is good as his terrified wife. And youngster Danny Lloyd is up to scratch as the kid who has a sixth sense ability which lets him know that all is not well. The look of the hotel is great. The soundtrack ...
