Disadvantages: can play with ur mind to much and send you mad

...his father's writing career. However, the Haunted past of the hotel catches up with them and ghostly visions of the previous occupants terrify Danny (Danny Lloyd) and his father becomes possessed by the evil within the walls (Jack Nicholson). Can they escape this creepy place before they become the latest victims of the overlook hotel? My review: This film recently won a channel 4 poll to find the scariest film of all time. The poll was based by ...
...mathematical formula released to 'explain' the ultimate scary film. Although one of the 10 films sampled matched it exactly, the shining was the closest creating an almost exact replicate. Based on this information it won't surprise you therefore I found this film terrifying in parts, and very creepy in others. Before I go into further detail let me give you some background on this film. The Shining was adapted from a very successful horror story ...

All work and no play makes Kubrick a dull director

Advantages: Nicholson's realism, cinematography, scary in places
Disadvantages: slipshod pace & character development, Duvall, disjointed script

...he tries his hand at the horror/suspense genre. I've read Steven King's novel and to some extent it is far better than the movie. But why King and his die-hard followers keep on banging on about how "totally different" the movie is to the book should realize that Kubrick ADAPTED the book into a working screenplay. Perhaps people should look the word up in the dictionary before firing off loose cannon. What we are left with is a decent psychological/haunted ...
...is contracted to look after the empty Overlook hotel throughout the winter season with his weak minded wife (Shelley Duvall) and gifted young son. But this isn't his best role in spite of his rather deranged & some would say "hammy" performance. He certainly convinces us that he is losing his marbles with that trademark grin of his but it all happens a little too early in the story. In addition the film either focuses on his gradual dementia or ...

Advantages: Atmosphere, performances, setpieces, story.
Disadvantages: A slow starter {which is good for me but not for some}

SYNOPSIS : The Torrances are planning to move to the Overlook Hotel deep in the mountains to maintain it over a long winter. This is Jacks first stable job in years so he and his wife are thrilled to be involved in the project. Danny their son however is less optimistic and is beginning to see images of the Overlook which scare and disturn him. On arriving at the Hotel Jack begins to write his novel while Wendy and Danny explore the place. Jack however ...

Later he is attacked by a mouldy old woman in one of the hotel bedrooms. Jack, becoming more and more distant from his family meets Delbert Grady {a waiter at one of Jack's party hallucinations} Mr Grady it transpires is a former caretaker like Jack, who murdered his family years earlier. ...

...deeply compelling. Nicholson and all the other actors fit the script perfectly as this film throws up a very, very good story line. Jack's son has the shining (he can see the dead) and keeps seeing dead children and blood in the hotel his father is looking after for the holiday. The ghosts in the hotel slowly drive Jack crazy, hence the classic line: "all work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy" and try to make him kill his family like the previous ...

...Nicholson was absolutely brilliant as the posessed janitor, and mix that with the suspence of the King norm. The famous words "here's Jonnie" was not part of the original script, but a line that Nicholson added, and it has stuck with him. And what would the film be like without it. It is one of the most famous lines in movie history. What a star. Classed as a horror, there was not that much to look away from, but it was the sort of horror film that ...

Disadvantages: You might not be able to sleep afterwards!

...I must say this is the scariest thing ever. I have still not seen it to the end (no don't tell me how it ends). Jack Nicholson is a thoroughly unpleasent egotistical writer who is slowly going mad in a deserted haunted hotel. Perfect casting! His downtrodden wife and child witness his descent into madness with no means of escape. Even if you have read the book, prepare to be scared out of your wits. Psychological Terror

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

This is the most terrifying film that I have ever watched and ever will watch. I swear that this film gave me nightmares and I am usually unaffected by any type of horror films! Despite this I still love it! I think that the psychological aspect of this film is what makes it so frightening, but Jack Nicholson plays the part of the father of the family very well indeed. He goes from being a loving caring father into a ciolent killer, and we see the ...

supernatural shining

Advantages: scary, well made
Disadvantages: overlong

Just as the maze outside the Overlook hotel is complex and bewildering this adaptation of a Stephen King novel is equally complex and bewildering. Kubrick’s film appears to work on various levels – on one it’s simply a supernatural horror, and on an another, a metaphorical statement on America’s bloody history. This is suggested by the fact that the setting of the film, the Overlook hotel, represents America. It has its own personality within the ...
...all history and future into the present. Into this setting steps Jack Torrance, his wife Wendy, and son Danny (who also has the ability to shine). Jack’s role is an awesome one, as he is responsible for looking after the hotel, and representing an entire history of American man. The pace of the film begins at a slow stroll, as the mysteries of the hotel begin to have an effect. Kubrick creates an uneasy atmosphere, through the use of the hotel’s ...

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's Jackie!!!!!!!!

Advantages: Nicholson, Kubrick, Steven King
Disadvantages: Shelley Duvall

The Shining is genuinely one of the most terrifying horror films ever made. Adapted from Stephen King's faultless novel of the same name, the film opens with writer Jack Torrence (the ever immaculate Jack Nicholson), his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and their only son Danny (Danny Lloyd) who travel to The Overlook hotel for the winter months, so Jack can act as the live in caretaker, whilst finishing his latest novel. Upon arriving at the (sinister) ...

Meanwhile, Danny after seeing an apparition of 2 young girls on the first day, finds room 237. The weather (snow) blocks the family in the hotel for the winter, and Jack begins to go insane. Having delusional episodes and hallucinating about people that aren't actually there. Including ...

Movies are like people, some shine and some don't.

Advantages: A simply great piece of film history.
Disadvantages: Some may find it lacking in cheap scares.

The Shining epitomises all that is Kubrick. As an adaptation of the Stephen King novel it was bound to disappoint some of the hardcore fans - the biggest alteration is the ending, which I shall not divulge, but offers up a much more psychologically chilling conclusion than the novel. Over all, however, the film is a veritable masterwork. We are introduced to the Torrence family, who take up residence in an empty hotel over a particually harsh winter ...
...of the hotel's sinister past via a series of cues. Which slowly build throughout the film, leading to an edge-of-your-seat final sequence. Kubricks aptitude for tension building presents itself full throttle in this movie. As we are lead throughout the weeks, seeing glimpses of the breakdown of the family unit, the mental instability of Jack, and the increasing ghostly experiences it would almost be a sigh of relief when the film finishes, if it ...

What was going through Kubrick's mind

Advantages: Well cast, tense atmosphere, unlike any other horror movie.
Disadvantages: Can be a little confusing towards the end

Jack Nicholson has got the perfect face to play an evil character and so is well cast in one of the most successful horror films of all time. In true Kubrick fashion, this film is atmospheric and far from normal. The author of the book this film was taken from (Stephen King) has had many of his books made into movies, some good, most of them bad. This has to be the best made adaption of all of them, mostly down to the directing and good casting. ...
...in to a hotel over the winter season when it shuts down. They go there to keep the place ticking over and as you've probably guessed, things do not work out as planned. The isolation of these three characters kept in a grand hotel starts to get interesting. The Shinning is without a doubt one of the scariest movies you will ever watch! In a recent poll it was voted number one scariest moment in movies for the "heres.... jonny" scene.
