But why King and his die-hard followers keep on banging on about how "totally different" the movie is to the book should realize that Kubrick ADAPTED the book into a working screenplay. ...deeply compelling. Nicholson and all the other actors fit the script perfectly as this film throws up a very, very good story line. Jack's son has the shining (he can see the dead) and keeps seeing dead children and blood in the hotel his father is looking after for the holiday. The ghosts in the hotel slowly drive Jack crazy, hence the classic line: "all work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy" and try to make him kill his family like the previous ...

The Shining epitomises all that is Kubrick. As an adaptation of the Stephen King novel it was bound to disappoint some of the hardcore fans - the biggest alteration is the ending, which I shall not divulge, but offers up a much more psychologically chilling conclusion than the novel. Jack Nicholson has got the perfect face to play an evil character and so is well cast in one of the most successful horror films of all time. In true Kubrick fashion, this film is atmospheric and far from normal.
