A shining example of a stonking good film

Disadvantages: Not a single one in my opinion

...a job as caretaker at the Overlook Hotel during the winter months, when no-one can holiday there because of the weather conditions. He takes his wife, Wendy, and son, Danny, with him, despite the hotel manager's warnings that a caretaker had gone mad from loneliness one winter, murdering his wife and children before killing himself. The first few weeks are spent quite happily, although Danny has hallucinations of the past and the future, none of ...

As Jack's behaviour becomes more and more aggressive, Wendy begins to fear for her life and that of her son. Will any of them get out alive? I would imagine/hope that there are few people who haven't heard of The Shining. Based on the novel by Stephen King and directed by Stanley Kubrick, it was made back in 1980, and yet for me and many others, ...

Story Jack Nicholson plays Jack, who has taken on a job as a hotel caretaker for the winter months and moves with his wife, Wendy and son, Danny to this huge hotel in the middle of nowhere. He is warned that things will get lonely, but as he is a writer, he is only too keen to have a bit of time to himself. However, ...

...a film and directed by the late and great Stanley Kubrick? *The Film. Jack Torrance is a writer; facing a bit of a mental block at the moment, and suffering from a cash flow problem. Wendy is his wife; she's not too pretty, has a penchant for lank hair and opening her eyes too wide. Danny is their son; he talks to his imaginary friend who lives in his finger. Advantages: Jack Nicholson is fantastic as a maniac!
Disadvantages: The acting can be a little 'forced'

Adapted from the book of the same title written by stephen king, this is a classis film directed by Stanley Kubrick (Eyes Wide Shut). This is the first adaptation of the Shining, as it was adapted as a tv mini-series in the 1990s. I got this from my local shop for £5 in their discount box and remembered watching it years ago and decided to get it to see if it was as good as I remembered. I was not disappointed! ...bit creepy and unstable at the best of times. Even in comedy roles he always gives the impression that the characters he plays could always "FREAKOUT!!!" at the flick of a switch. I truly believe that there is this little bit of madness that resides in our old friend Jack and I believe that Stanley Kubrick detected this when he cast Nicholson for the role of Jack Torrence, the unstable and ever maddening caretaker of the Overlook Hotel. Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Advantages: one of the best horror films ever
Disadvantages: None

...made, scripted and acted and the only motivation I ever have to go and see them is to see what film they ripped off this time. The only truly original horror films are the old Dracula and Frankenstein movies of the thirties, they set the template and since then every other scary film has been a copy or a copy of a copy(which is even worse), whilst the original stalk n slash is a 60s film called Peeping Tom. Then we come to the totally insane, blood ...
...worse and worse, and although The Evil Dead is now a cult film it really is appallingly badly made. The only horror films that I have ever been scared by are Event Horizon and Shining. Shining was made before the recent glut of teen slashers and comes from the book by Stephen King, which is his scariest apart from IT. Shining, originally called The Shining was made in 1980 by the late, great Stanley Kubrick, who could proudly say he’d never ...

REDRUM no not the horse

Advantages: Jack, Kubrick, scary, chilling
Disadvantages: The little twin girls are too creepy

This could well be the greatest horror film ever made: chilling, visually stunning and featuring some excellent acting, it can hardly fail to scare. The Shining is a rare event in horror, it doesn't follow the usual format of b-grade acting, poor effects and predictable plot. Instead we are treated to a masterpiece with superb direction from Kubrick, incredible acting (especially from Nicholson) and a strangely original plot which is thankfully not ...

Heeeeeere's JONNY

Advantages: Superb acting and strength of character, superb directing, the Original And Best!
Disadvantages: Some people may be a bit too scared!

The Shining is one of my all time favourite films. It combines breathtaking suspense with sheer terror, with an ingenious plot and superb characters. The film is based on a family of three who go to live in a hotel as caretakers during the winter. The father, played by Jack Nicholson, is trying to write a book, his wife played by Shelley Duval and son Danny. The family meet another caretaker, who realises that Danny is telepathic like himself. ...
...of course not without founding. The hotel is haunted, and many strange goings on are witnessed by son Danny. He is terrified by visions of cascading blood, a famous scene. The father is more comfortable with what he sees. He chats in a bar which is full of people despite the hotel being deserted. Eventually, through the solitude which is portrayed so well in this film, Jack goes completely psychotic. The acting is absolutely fantastic, I have rarely ...

Advantages: Scary, tense, engaging

The Shining is a 1980 horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick which is based a Stephen King novel of the same name. It stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall and Danny Lloyd. He is warned that the last caretaker got cabin fever and killed his family and himself, but Jack ...

But things don't go as planned. Danny sees visions of the previous ...

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy

Advantages: Great film. Suspence throught the film
Disadvantages: None!

The Shining is famous for being one the scariest horror films around. When I began to watch it a few days back, I expected to be frightened by the film. But surprisingly I wasn’t, but this doesn’t take any of the excitement from it. The film was produced in 1980 so is quite an old flick but I feel this adds more tension to the film, making it a true classic and just as exciting today as it was 20-odd years ago. Based on the novel written by Stephen ...

That'll teach you - keep knocking out books in your lunch time, and leave the movie making to the professionals. You might gain from this that I'm not the greatest Stephen King fan in the world. He shrugs off the hotel's spooky history and moves his family in on the last day ...

The Finest Psychological Horror Movie Ever Made

...all having a hand in the same movie? It could only ever have been a classic then couldn't it. But this isn't just a classic of the horror genre, it is also one of the few movies which will truly disturb you both during its showing and for a long time afterwards. It is psychological horror at its finest, one of the most difficult types of movie to actually get right, but here Kubrik manages to hit it right on the head. The original Stephen King novel ...

...I do give some of the plot away, though nothing to really spoil the story should you wish to watch it! Shining according to this horror film is: when two people talk to each without using their mouths, - telepathy! That out the way, this film is fairly old (1980 I think), but remains as enthralling today as when it was first released! Overlook hotel is set to close for the winter months, and re-open on 1st May. Jack moves into the staff quarters of the hotel, with his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and son Danny (Danny Lloyd). All seems well for ...
