THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW is a magical phenomenon unlike anything ever before seen onscreen. Borrowing largely from cinema's horror conventions, the film begins as an innocent...
more...young couple is stranded at the home of a mad scientist who is building the perfect man. The castle is filled with a most bizarre group of characters who worship their master, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, played magnificently by the fabulous Tim Curry, in leather jacket, pearls, fishnet stockings, and heavy makeup. Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) are forced to examine their own sexuality as the voluptuous doctor releases the hidden desires in each of them. Based on the stage musical by Richard O'Brien (who also appears in the film as Riff Raff), the film comes alive with unforgettable song-and-dance numbers that have come to represent the sexual liberation of the 1970s. The outstanding costuming and makeup, the terrific acting by a group of relative unknowns (Curry, O'Brien, Bostwick, Sarandon, Nell Campbell, Patricia Quinn, Meat Loaf), and the memorable songs ('Time Warp', 'Sweet Tranvestite') help make THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW one of the most bizarrely entertaining and satisfying musicals ever made.

and Flash Gordon was there in silver underwear
Review of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (DVD) by MHam

Advantages: great film
Disadvantages: Not to everyones taste

...to an old castle up the road for help and a telephone. The door is opened by a very strange looking butler (Richard O Brien) and things then take a change to the very bizarre…. It is almost 30 years ago in 1975 when the Rocky Horror picture show first hit the big screen and last Saturday it came no 16 in a Channel 4 poll of the most sexy on screen moments. When it first came out it was voted the worst film ever in a poll so why, 30 years on is ... Read review

25 years of absolute pleasure
Review of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (DVD) by fujisan_uk

Advantages: Classic musical, fantastic extras
Disadvantages: How about a box set with rice, newspaper and Scotts tissues?!

...as Frank N Furter. The crowd was wild, the dresses were phenomenal, that bloke from Corrie (the one who did those crap windows ads) was the narrator! The only trouble was... I hadn't a clue what the hell was going on! I was lucky enough to see RHPS on TV a couple of months later (with a pre-amble from Mark Lamarr about how uncomfortable he was with the idea that thousands of men in womens underwear were sitting looking at him at that moment!) - ... Gothic meets the twenty-second century
Review of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (DVD) by wulise

Advantages: Can be watched time and again.
Disadvantages: ME DANCING ALONG TO THE SONGS!

...old and yet I find the issues it creates are as relevant today as they were in the early 1970’s. It is a stereotyped science fiction movie, portrayed in a format, which is very ‘tongue in cheek’. ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ combines comic humour with a classic Gothic horror story, Frankenstein: Gothic meets the twenty-second century! In a fifties sci-fi film genre. **History** ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ ... Read review

Oh Rocky
Review of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (DVD) by Glorificus1

Advantages: Quotable, kitsch, funny
Disadvantages: too much of a good thing can be bad for you

At the late night, double feature picture show, you might bump into a tall dark man in a basque. We’re talking about a film that has made many a rational human being shout random sections of script, just for the sheer pleasure of doing so. The musical on which the film is based opened June 1973 at the Royal Court's upstairs experimental Theatre. It took Richard O’ Brien six months to write… music and all! Janet Weiss (Susan ... Give yourself over to absolute pleasure
Review of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (DVD) by john.sw

Advantages: spoof sci-fi, monster, horror flick musical
Disadvantages: It all happened 25 years ago - when I was your age!

The first time I watched The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a real let-down. This was in 1975, after having had my fill of The Rocky Horror Show in the King’s Road Theatre. Goodness knows, I had seen the stage show so many times and knew every nuance of every actor, from Tim Curry and Meatloaf, to Little Nell, and, of course Richard O’Brien himself. As each actor changed (the stage show ran and ran) so did the performances. Little did ... Read review

its a fantastic journey through space and time
Review of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (DVD) by kano

Advantages: fantastic, tonnes of extras
Disadvantages: none

...see it at once!!! The best way is still to go to the cinema or to the stage production, but a close second is this DVD release. I am talking about the 25th Anniversary double dvd boxset. You can find opinions of the film elsewhere on Ciao, suffice to say it is the strangest thing you will ever watch, but I think there is something in it to appeal to everyone. The story of the young couple Brad Majors and Janet Weiss (Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon) ... Read review

Review of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (DVD) by loulou6

Advantages: brilliant film (even after all these years)
Disadvantages: none - sorry

...about an alien transvestite building the perfect man while playing strange sex games with his visitors, sounds like an interesting start for a movie, then you're in for a treat. Not only is this film all of the above and more, but it stars a brilliant cast - Susan Sarandon (playing Janet) Barry Bostwick (playing Brad), Meat Loaf (playing Eddie), Charles Gray (who is the narrator), Richard O'Brien (the butler Riff-Raff) and, of course, the supreme ... MENTAL AS ANYTHING
Review of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (DVD) by flashpointz

Advantages: great songs, fantastic scenery and costumes, good story
Disadvantages: Mr O'Brien - how about a RHPS 2??

I never really understood the appeal of this film until I heard the music and watched the film. Yes, I know that sounds faintly loopy – but you know what I mean. You hear people talking about it. You read things saying how good it is. But you just think to yourself – “Well it’s not really MY Sort of film”. Well, my advice to you – if you feel the same way as I did – forget it. Watch this film and prepare ... Read review

FANG-TASTIC FUN
Review of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (DVD) by flashpointz

Advantages: great songs, vampish humour, appeals to all ages
Disadvantages: nothing - except when do we get RHPS 2 ?

...fruity, it's FANG-tastic - It's the ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW! To be truthful, it took me a few years to understand what all the fuss was about with this film. A bunch of weirdos and cross-dressers prancing about did not seem to hold much appeal to me then. But it seemed that every party or disco at the time would go absolutely crazy mental when 'Time Warp' ws played. In fact it is still a guaranteed floor filler at any party night to this day. ... Review of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (DVD) by Spongly

Advantages: Wonderful, camp fun
Disadvantages: Homophobics probably won't like it too much

...watching this oddball movie for the first time, and I must confess that I just didn’t get it. I did get the inkling that there was something going on that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. So I watched it again, and thought it was very amusing. Then again, and then it hit me. This film is a masterpiece. How it evaded me for so long I’ll never now. Perhaps with it being a musical I was distracted by thoughts of Julie Andrews charging ... Read review

Advantages: Good cast, fantastic songs, hilariously funny
Disadvantages: None!!

What the can I say about this film that hasn't been said before? Nothing really but hell, its so good I'm gonna say it all again!! My first thoughts were "Horror? No thanks" and I really wasn't going to watch it. Then I was told that it was a musical and thought "God no. I hated 'The sound of music' and every other musical I've ever seen". So what makes this musical different from all the other muscials I've seen. The songs are fantastic and ... Read review
