Rock And A Hard Place

Advantages: very enjoyable, full 2hr 30min
Disadvantages: where???

...back to what I enjoy the most, so I decided to review a favourite film of mine that was on Channel 5 last night (Tuesday). That film being “The Rock” (no WWF references please!!). Channel 5 does occasionally surprise me with the films it puts on. Normally it’s shock at the amount of rubbish the pump out. Which is why I was surprised to see this on as it is such an enjoyable film. “The Rock” stars two of my all time ...
...my book. Probably two of the best actors still on the circuit. So what’s it all about? ~~THE PLOT~~ Nicholas Cage plays Stanley Goodspeed, Bio-Chemist. He spends his day playing around with deadly viruses, nerve gas, and basically anything that can kill you from a hundred feet away. Cool huh? He does this for the Government of the United States and is happy in his work. He has a lovely wife (Carla) and is expecting their first child. Enter ...

Are you happy with your haircut.

Advantages: Great performances, amazing action scenes, blood, people melting, the best score ever in a film.
Disadvantages: it Ends

The title is part of what a very stereotypical gay male hairdresser says in the film, infact this is it in full :- I never saw you throw that gentleman off the balcony. All I care about is are you happy with your haircut. General Hummel: Put the phone down. Major Baxter: I'm calling them Frank, I'm asking for more time. General Hummel: You're being asked by a friend. [Baxter continues.] General Hummel: You're being ordered by a superior officer! ...
...So ‘The Rock’ isn’t the most original movie in the world, in fact it lends parts off a lot of movies, but the real surprise is how well all these parts work in this film. How many other films would dare to bring back Sean Connery as a spy for Her Majesty’s Secret Service, but this time named John (Mason not Bond). The story follows General Hummel (Ed Harris) as a highly decorated and respected officer in the US Army who has ...

...me here. I just discovered the wonder that is netradio, and I'm having trouble turning it off; Hence, an op on a movie which doesn't take too much analysis. The Rock is another classic from the stable of Bruckheimer/Bay. Indeed, it was producer Don Simpson's swan song (at least nominally,) and in keeping with Simpson's fast-shiny-drugfuelled-drunk-abuse lifestyle, this is all sepia tinted skies and huge explosions; set pieces are tied together with ...
...is beyond dispute. Locations include the oft-pastiched San Francisco car chase, claustrophic chemical labs and... Alcatraz prison, where the bad guys are holed up, and the final showdown takes place. In action terms, this is a by-the-numbers high concept picture. Nicholas Cage is the hero, 'chemical superfreak' and the only man who can save the eastern seaboard from a nasty facemelty gas attack. Said attack is the weapon used by Ed Harris in order ...

...and Ed Harris. The film has been produced by the same people who brought us Bad Boys (Martin Lawrence and Will Smith) Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. It is rated 15 and just over 2 hours long, but you will never look at the time once you start watching this film as the plot is brilliant from start to finish. There is quite alot of swearing (nearly ever other sentence) and violence but not enough to be off putting as I guess a film like this would ...

His character has never been out in the action before and so portrays fear yet motivation to get the job done. The supporting cast of ...

...I being shortchanged by getting the Region 2 version of The Rock ? Well the answer is now yes as in the USA the renowed Criterion people have brought out a new 2 dvd set for your pleasure ! THE FILM Well it's the usual Bay/Bruckheimer action fare with a lot of tetosterone flying around as men use big guns, big cars and make big statements. However it's all very entertaining with Cage and Connery taking on a whole army and a ruthless Ed Harris with ...
...PICTURE/SOUND The film is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and is of a very high standard. There are a few scenes that have dirt but overall itis vibrant and has no trouble with the many dark scenes in the film. Sound wise it's a treat. There is a Dolby 2.0 mix but the real draws are the Dolby 5.1 mix and the DTS mix. I was quite surprised that a lot of the mix happens in the front speakers but when action kicks in all speakers will sing ...

All-star Cast

Advantages: All-star cast composed of Nicolas Cage, Ed Harris and Sean Connery.
Disadvantages: Stupid Generals

I just finished watching The Rock for about the eighth time and so isn’t the most original movie in the world but it has an all-star cast composed of Nicolas Cage, Ed Harris, David Morris, Michael Biehn, and William Forsythe and of course Sean Connery. After turning in his tuxedo and Aston Martin following Diamonds Are Forever, Connery has gone back into the loop as John Mason though Sean Connery plays his character exactly as he might portray a ...

Disadvantages: Read the story like a book

Just imagine the scene, your walking around the lovely city of San Francisco when suddenly out of the sky, a missile come hurtling down towards you. Not really a nice thing to happen I think that you will agree. He takes them along with his bunch of crack soldier guys to the worlds most secure prison, ...

Boulder-ful stuff....

Advantages: A thoroughly well-executed “Boy’s Own” movie with plenty of action....
Disadvantages: Ultimately very silly, a little derivative and of course, the logic is occasionally flawed....

...has some nice twists to the usual story of the megalomaniac that succumbs to the suave and plucky hero(es). The film starts off proper with an exercise that requires two of the FBI’s crack scientists locked in an airtight chamber in a seemingly harmless diffusing of a bomb disguised as a toy....little do they know that it’s something more than they expected and sets off a brief and exhilarating scene of a race against time to save themselves. ...
...be called into action in the big leagues.... Ed Harris is General Hummel, a man who we are constantly reminded is supremely respected and holds such enviable trinkets of war such as three Purple Hearts, two Silver Stars and the Medal of Honor (your typical fictional all-American hero). The situation? Morality pays dividends as we witness what appears to be a typical day out in Alcatraz. We witness some burly, shifty men (hardly subtle direction ...

...good one as well. The plot is that a honorary military officer is pissed at the government not properly compensating the families of the Vietnam war, so he takes control of the abandoned prison island Alcatraz, steals some poison gas missiles and threatens to fire them at San Francisco, unless the families are properly compensated. The best action film I have ever seen

Advantages: lots of gun action, great explosions, decent acting
Disadvantages: Connery looks to old to be taken on a bunch of super fit 30 year olds

...pretty unusual for action films. The film has a fairly simple plot but it is done well. Nicholas Cage is training to be a special agent and Seon Connery was one although he is now in prison. The film revolves around Alcatras and this were the action takes place. Ed Harris plays an ex army officer and he enters alcitras with the intention of taking on board hostages, which he does. The inevitable then happens and the rookie agent played by Cage and Seon Connery accompanied by a group of other people have to go in and save the day. What follows is all out action with plenty of great explosions some cool gadgets and lots of killing. Connery and Cage play there parts well although Connery looks ...

Not to be taken too seriously

Advantages: The action... oh yes the action
Disadvantages: The plot is...well... less than convincing

This is another one of the definitive action films of recent years (interestingly enough Nic Cage seems to have been in most of them... Con Air, Face Off etc). This has a plot which at best defies plausability and at worst is total nonsense... luckily it doesn't matter. The action is excellent as are the cast. To summarise ... Ed Harris is a disillusioned Army officer who is upset about the lack of Government support for war widows... he takes Alcatraz ...
...The government sends in a team of Navy Seals to try and prevent the launch of the gas... and here we get to the less-than-believable part... The team also includes one Nic Cage as an FBI agent who is basically a lab guy (hasn't fired a gun since the academy) and a convict - the only man to escape from Alcatraz, ex-SAS, british agent - been in prison fo thirty years - Sean Connery. Once in Alcatraz the Seal team get slaughtered and it's upto Connery ...

Welcome to the rock

Advantages: good pace, great actors, good story
Disadvantages: bit cheesy in places

The Rock is one of the greatest of all action films. This is a movie that not only presents some incredible, if not stunning, action sequences, but also a smart plot and intelligent screenplay. This is a film that really works in it's genre to the fullest. Director Michael Bay is a master of this material and adds great style and vision to already excellent material. The screenplay by David Weisberg, Douglas S. Cook and Mark Rosner has a touch of ...
...rambo here, and the effect is great on the big screen. "The Rock" never slowes down but never gets dumb either. Elements taken from other films are lovingly polished to a gloss. Nicolas Cage, Sean Connery and Ed Harris all give convincing performances that ignite the screen along with everything else. "The Rock" also has some of the best of all action scenes. The chase scene through San Francisco is pure excitement and thrills and amazingly filmed. ...
