In Gore Verbinski's remake of Hideo Nakata's chilling horror film, a group of teenagers all die suddenly and inexplicably exactly one week after watching a mysterious videotape at...
more...a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest. Journalist Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts), a relative of one of the victims, begins an investigation that leads to a mountain resort where she discovers the tape, which contains footage of random and surreal images. After viewing the tape, Rachel receives a phone call stating that she, too, has seven days left to live. As the clock ticks away, Rachel enlists the help of her former boyfriend Noah (Martin Henderson), who is the father of her startlingly serious young son Aidan (David Dorfman). Assisted by the intuitive illustrations of Aidan and the initially reluctant research of Noah, Rachel attempts to discover the significance of the cryptic tape before her time is up.
The original RING, based on a novel by Koji Suzuki, was a cult phenomenon in Japan, spawning a sequel, a prequel, and other spin-offs. Although Verbinski's adaptation shares much in common with its Japanese counterpart, the director distinctly alters numerous plot elements and, in grandiose Hollywood style, employs a much larger budget. The beautiful cinematography is one of the more telling enhancements, along with added screen time for other characters, including the morose Richard Morgan (Brian Cox). However, the key to this RING is Watts, who shines through the creepy atmosphere in a role that follows her success in MULHOLLAND DRIVE. This would appear to be no coincidence, since the film comes across like a David Lynch version of an X-FILES episode that presents shockingly scary moments and makes the most out of the unknown.

Disadvantages: Plot annoyances | Tries too hard | Just not as scary

...was a cocky one, with the big Hollywood Execs thinking that they could match the same level of fear that the original Ring gave us. The Ring has evolved much like the tape in the film itself, except without killing people. It has gained recognition and notoriety among people and has slowly become a stand out film in the crowded horror genre. It seemed unlikely that the remake would better the original or indeed come close, after all the Japanese film ... Read review

It is only when the teacher points out that Aidan was drawing pictures of the girl’s death BEFORE it happened that Rachel becomes curious. Advantages: supernatural horror, done in the best possible way
Disadvantages: it makes you think, it's not gory (couldbe disadvantages depending on who you are)

...they decided on ‘Ringu’, being the most infamous one. My husband has seen both versions, and suggested that if I wanted to watch the original, it might be best to watch the remake first, as he found some of the original hard to follow (what with not understanding some of the Japanese references, and the whole language for that matter). Being a fan of Japanese horror, I was obviously planning to watch ‘Ringu’ eventually, so I decided to take his ... Read review

Frodo Never Saw THIS Ring Coming.
Review of The Ring DVD by Howiemon

Advantages: Loads. Great film all round - tense, disturbing and very scary.
Disadvantages: So good that it's actually unsettling and not easy to watch.

Let's cut to the chase, 'The Ring' is the best film I've seen in ages. It's been a very long time since I emerged from a cinema feeling shaken, emotionally drained and in desperate need of a stiff drink, the last time was probably when 'Se7en' came out. Put simply, The Ring scared the crap out of me. There are two kinds of horror film these days, the first is the trendy, post-modern teen-slasher flick epitomised by the likes of Scream, I Know What ... Read review

Disadvantages: The horse scene was unnecessary in my opinion

...Ring" last weekend. I'd tried the week earlier but some idiot (that'll be me then!) didn't think to check the cinema times and phone up. I assumed those in the local newspaper would be correct, is that such a crime? Needless to say we missed the film and ended up seeing "Maid In Manhattan" instead. I can tell you right from the start, The Ring is a whole lot better than Maid In Manhattan. In fact it isn't in the same league as Maid In Manhattan! ... Read review

Everyone will suffer... well, maybe not
Review of The Ring DVD by spobz

Advantages: Gripping and eerie!
Disadvantages: Not enough conclusions made about mysterious videotape and other parts of story, and the explanations that are given are brief

I saw the first advert for this film about 6 months ago, and to be honest, it looked quite crap. The title itself seemed quite laughable, and many adolescent boys that I know pointed out the connotations of it. It looked like another rubbish teen flick (I know that sounds strange coming from a sixteen year old) with no plot, crap acting, and a pretty blonde. Since it came out, I’ve heard people raving about how scary and brilliant it is, but these ... Read review

...who has to sleep with the lights on after watching a horror film. There’s nothing scary about your average, unimaginative Nightmare on Elm Street type stuff. So many of them are the film equivalent of paint by numbers. Sitting down to watch The Ring, I was ... Read review

Review of The Ring DVD by GR-Design

Advantages: weird film, which is always good, refreshing from the norm
Disadvantages: too many loopholes

The Ring was a film I had been looking forward to seeing for quite some time. I’ve read many an opinion on the Japanese version, also entitled The Ring and it’s follow up ‘Ringu’. When I heard that they were making an English version of the film I was getting a little excited. I’m one of those that cannot be bothered reading subtitles in a film as I think it takes away the enjoyment, so even though I had heard good things about The Ring, I never did ... Read review

On agreeing a time and place to meet and to go I set off, beginning to wonder what the film might be like. At about half past 9, just as I walked out the cinema, you could probably pinpoint the exact moment where both machoism and egoism waved a pleasant goodbye out the window and left me vulnerable to ... ...and clinging on tightly to the person sat next to me like a limpet. Call me odd, but leaving a cinema wondering if I’ll get to sleep that night is my idea of a good time. I’m a fan of good old 70’s masterpieces like The Shining, The Exorcist, Carrie, and The Omen. Good horror films recently have been few and far between, and the more constant wave of teen angst schlock horror never quite does it for me. I’m certainly ... Read review
