Remains in Your Memory

Advantages: Well acted, scripted, directed
Disadvantages: The character of Stevens will always be Antony Hopkins to anyone who has seen this film!

...film. Okay, it's not in the most obvious way, but this is the way true romantic films should be. In this adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's novel of the same title, Anthony Hopkins plays a Butler, Stevens, who is so loyal and dedicated to his job, that he appears almost inhuman. The film tracks his memories of his relationship with Miss Kenton, the housekeeper, played by Emma Thompson, as they carry out their daily duties in the house, unaware, or turning ...
...the Second World War begins to erupt. Although there is no physical romance, or even spoken words of love to show how close the butler and the housekeeper become, it is obvious to the viewer, and the subtle way in which their relationships is presented makes each look, facial expression and sentence ten times as meaningful as it would otherwise be. The scenery is really lovely, and captures the era well, with subtle changes in weather reflecting ...

Touching Story Of Unrequited Love

Advantages: Superb acting and brilliant storyline.
Disadvantages: None

The Remains Of The Day is a touching story of unrequited love and blind devotion to duty, based on the novel by Ishiguro Kazuo. The film actually opens in the future. Darlington Hall, family pile of the late Lord Darlington, (James Fox) recently denounced as a Nazi sympathiser, has been sold to an American millionaire, Mr Lewis (Christopher Reeve). Stevens the butler (Anthony Hopkins) has stayed on. Butlering is all he knows, and all he expects to ...
...years ago he did have the chance of love with Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson), the very attractive housekeeper. The unspoken passion between them simmered as both went about their duties. But Stevens denied his feelings for the sake of duty. Miss Kenton, unable to make the first move and unsure of Stevens’ feelings, eventually leaves Darlington Hall and marries in haste. The marriage is not a happy one, and many years later, as the marriage finally breaks ...

Advantages: Great cast, writing, score...
Disadvantages: unfulfilling ending

...it had been stuck on the end of the tape, but I was pleasantly surprised. It stars Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins as young housekeeper Miss Kenton and respectable butler Stevens respectively, with supporting roles from James Fox and Christopher Reeve. Based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, it charts the growing affection between the two. When Miss Kenton leaves the household, Stevens is free to finally acknowledge his feelings for her but as she’s ...

The Remains of the Day - Repressed Love, Beautifully Acted

Advantages: Great lead performances and supporting cast.
Disadvantages: Claustrophobic, lacks excitement

...with Miss Kenton (Thompson) and the film takes place with events leading up to the Second World War. During their time they form a close relationship but repress true feelings for each other. The subplot involves meetings between diplomats taking place within the hall which are to shape political foreign relations between America, Britain and Germany and the controversy that surrounds Lord Darlington’s friendship with right-wing extremists. The story ...
...during their time working at the hall and then 20 years later when they both reflect on their time together. The films famous supporting cast are excellent but it is Hopkins and Thompson who give the film subtlety and meaning. Hopkins deeply conveys a man unable to display political views or express desire properly and who has much dignity and authority but who is torn inside. The settings are quite claustrophobic but genuine as most of the film ...
