I was 15, and had just woken up on the Sunday morning to get dressed for choir practice before the morning service, when my younger brother told me that Diana had died in a car crash in Paris. I didn't believe him - while Diana didn't mean as much to me (my mind being filled with flirtation, pimples, and the appropriate skirt length) as to other people, I found the idea upsetting, and absurd. ...

Royally Amusing

Advantages: Great film, sensitively handled
Disadvantages: Not to everyone's taste

I have wanted to see the film The Queen since it came out at the cinema. When Dame Helen Mirren won the Oscar for her performance as HRH, it piqued my interest further. So when hubby and the kids asked what I would like for Mothers' Day, after realising that Happy Feet and Flushed Away weren't out yet, I chose to have the DVD of The Queen. So, last night, I finally had the chance to watch the film. It was well worth the wait! As most people will ...
...from Tony Blair winning the general election to the crisis facing the royal family after the death of Princess Diana. This is a period that we will remember ourselves, so the film has a disadvantage to begin with - we know what happens. We're not waiting for a plot twist or to find out the ending. The main reason we watch is to discover how the characters are portrayed. Helen Mirren and Michael Sheen are outstanding as the Queen and Tony Blair. ...

Drama Queen!

Advantages: Superb script and acting, challenging your views, simply fantastic
Disadvantages: Some scenes are just speculative

...see that ITV were screening the Oscar winning movie "The Queen" already on Sunday night, so I knew I had to tune in to see what all the fuss was about. As you may or may not know, The Queen won lead actress Helen Mirren an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Screen Actors Guild Award and an Award at the Venice Film Festival for being the Best Actress, along many others both for Helen Mirren, and the film was a whole. It has been hugely successful, ...
...seeing what all the fuss was about! The film shows us the events from when Tony Blair was elected as Prime Minister in 1997, to the death of Princess Diana at the end of August 1997. It focuses on the backlash that came about against the Queen when she did not appear to speak publicly on the Princess' untimely death, and how this affected politicians, the Government and the rest of the Royal Family. I was only 11 years old at the time of Diana's ...

Should it not be 'Diana'?

Advantages: Emotional
Disadvantages: Irritating

In the wake of the tenth anniversary of Diana's death, ITV choose the top time to show the drama depicting the relationship between The Queen and Tony Blair in August 1997. It is needless to say that is is quite surprising that we can already be watching the television premiere of a 2006 movie, and I expect the buckets of money were aplenty when it came to ITV getting the rights to air this movie, and other channels were forced to fight it out in ...
...on a movie. I guess the viewer is the only person that really wins. The attention drawn towards this film is all thanks to that of Helen Mirren, who plays the infamous role of The Queen, and I can only imagine what being handed a role such as that does to ones self - if I'm going to write this review like a member of the monachy. What struck me about this film about ten minutes through was how incredibly Diana based it was, as I was expecting a movie ...

An intimate portrayal of the British Royal Family

Advantages: Good view, excellent acting
Disadvantages: Difficult to know how true to fact it is in places

The Queen released in 2006 tells the story of the events surrounding the death of Diana, the Princes of Wales on the 31st August 1997. It is rare insight into the World of the British Royal Family at a time which saw them plunged to their lowest ever popularity. The death of Diana, saw a public reaction of grief that was unprecedented and it was therefore wise that writer Stephen Frears and the director of this film, Peter Morgan waited almost 10 ...
...Helen Mirren plays the Queen, in a role that won her an Oscar for the best leading Actress in a film. The other prominent members of the cast include James Cromwell (HRH Prince Philip), Alex Jennings (HRH Prince Charles), Sylvia Syms (the Queen Mother), Michael Sheen (Tony Blair) and Helen McRory (Cherie Blair). The story begins with Tony Blair's landslide general election victory of May 1st 1997. There is an early humorous moment here when Mr Blair ...

Not a good week for Her Majesty!

Advantages: Excellent film

...vividly that incredible week at the beginning of September 1997 - the week Princess Diana died. Particularly I remember the complete shock, followed by an outpouring of public grief never known before and probably never likely to be known again in our lifetime, and the hostility vented against the Royal Family for not showing their emotions and instead opting for the 'stiff upper lip!' I was never a big Diana fan, although I did feel her death was ...
...to note that one of the things that this film did not do, at least in my mind, was to come down on one side or another and I think that all the events were depicted in a very honest way. The key players in this film are obviously the Queen herself, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, the Queen Mother and Tony and Cherie Blair. Princes William and Harry are not shown at all which I think was a very good decision as even after all the time that had elapsed ...

...ceded Hong Kong back to the Chinese, the IRA continued their attack on both the British Mainland and the Provinces, BA workers went on strike, the first Harry Potter book was published and bone-in cuts of beef were banned, oh yes, and there were the fairly minor stories involving Tony Blair sweeping to power to head a new Labour administration and the death of Princess Diana. It's not often that we get a film that concentrates so closely on a snippet ...
...less than 10 years in the past and one which involves the current reigning monarch. But this is exactly what "The Queen" does. Director Stephen Frears picks up the action on the night of May 1 1997, the night on which a certain Mr Blair wooed the country with his promise of change and revolution. Whether truth or supposition we take a look at things from the Royal perspective and find a deeply cynical establishment, less than impressed by this young ...

HM (Helen Mirren) The Queen

Advantages: Superb performances from Helen Mirren and Michael Sheen
Disadvantages: The rest of the film not quite as good as it could have been

After all the Oscar nominations for best costume, score, director, original screenplay and movie and Helen Mirrens's best actress winning performance as Queen Elizabeth II, I really wanted to see The Queen (2006) and having missed it at the cinema it was on our DVD rental list. But to my surprise ITV were showing the Stephen Frears directed film this evening to coincide with the 10th anniversary with the death of Princess Diana so I settled in to ...
...reactions and responses of the Royal Family, the British public and government in the week from the death of Diana to her funeral in 1997. In brief the film starts with the election of the New Labour government and the new Prime Minister Tony Blair (wonderfully portrayed by Michael Sheen) and sets the scene early on of a nation which is changing versus the monarchy which has been in place for hundreds of years and has hardly changed due to its traditional ...

Queen of Harts

Advantages: The performances of the whole cast, subtle and powerful
Disadvantages: Perhaps a bit pro-royalist

One of the most critically acclaimed and award-winning films of last year was Stephen Frears’s The Queen, starring the Oscar, Bafta and pretty much every other award-winning Helen Mirren as Elizabeth II. The film begins with the election of 1997, when Tony Blair (played here by Michael Sheen) became PM for the first time. We watch as he nervously conducts his first meeting with the queen, in which she has to formally ask him to become Prime Minister ...
...certain age will remember was the day when Princess Diana and Dodi Al-Fayed were killed in the Paris car crash. Saddened, but hardly grief-stricken, the Royal Family (Prince Phillip played by James Cromwell, the Queen Mother by Sylvia Sym and Prince Charles by Alex Jennings) decide to mourn privately and with dignity, which is what the Queen presumes the country expects from her. However, she has misjudged completely the public’s mood. The masses ...

...was so much publicity surrounding the film including HelenMirren winning an oscar I could not miss it. The film is basicaly about Tony Blairs confrontation with the royal family about the way in which affairs of state should be handled. The issue is that of Princess Diana's funeral and how it should be presented to the public. In fact a lot more is at stake, Tony is newly elected and he sees his popularity as being very important to his public image. ...

When the tradgedy strikes and Diana is killed Tony's spin doctor sees an opportunity for him to capture public popularity and drafts a "peoples princess speech" during the night for Tony to broadcast in the morning. Michael Sheen plays the part of Tony and is exempalry, he should have got an oscar as well. When the news breaks ...

...a bit sceptical because of the subject matter & the fact that it won Oscars! Helen Mirren was superb in the lead, so much so that by the end I felt as if I was watching the real Queen. It gave a seemingly realistic insight to the workings of the Royal Family and in the end was very sympathetic to the difficult situation in which they found themselves. Michael Sheen was also excellent as Tony Blair. Again, the film showed the inner workings of Downing ...
