Advantages: A true depiction of Christ's last hours. Disadvantages: Bloodthirsty. Graphic violence that may disturb some viewers.
~ ~ The mad cabbie and family went to watch the new movie about our Lord, “The Passion of the Christ” over the weekend. I find it hard to recall when a film last caused such a furore of criticism and comment in the media (both good and bad) as this two-hour plus depiction of Christ’s last hours on earth.
~ ~ Mel Gibson, the famous all-action actor (and devout Christian), decided he wanted to make a movie about Christ’s Passion, from the time of ... ...to his death on the Cross at Calvary at the hands of the Jews and Romans.
But the backing (or the motivation) to make such a movie was lacking in present-day Hollywood, so Gibson took the almost unprecedented decision to finance the movie with $30 million of his own fortune. He felt it was a story that he simply HAD to produce on celluloid, and was thus prepared to gamble his own money in order to ensure that it was produced. The fact that it is ...

Advantages: Passionate, authentic, different Disadvantages: Some miscasting
The movie starts off in the garden of Gethsemane and has a mild cliff-hanger of an ending on Easter Sunday. It is unique in that the dialogue is mostly in Aramaic, the language spoken in Roman-dominated Palestine 2000 years ago, with English subtitles. However, the decision to cast James (Jim) Caviezel as Jesus perhaps was not the best which could have been made. True, at 35 he is about the right age, but he had to be altered with a prosthetic nose ... ...better choice may have been the older Antonio Banderas (43) or Benjamin Bratt (40). Furthermore, the movie was filmed in Italy, the origin of most of the little-known-about actors and you’ll also notice one other factor as the plot unfolds – the distinct absence of black actors or those of a Middle-Eastern appearance.
*** THE STORY ***
I shall not go into great detail here as I do not wish to spoil the plot for those who have yet to see the film. ...

...than being forced to endure the same conversational topic over and over again, especially if that topic is a film, and particularly one you either have not seen or have seen and dislike. So it has been among Christians, of which I am one, for the last week or so, ever since Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ' went on general release last Friday. This film is regarded by nearly all the Christians I know as being almost compulsory, whole cinemas ... ...4,000 tickets on the internet. I lead a small prayer and social group of people in their twenties and they decided that they wanted to go and see it, so I somewhat reluctantly agreed to come along..it wasn't as if I didn't want to see it, but I didn't want the whole chatty and social atmosphere that goes with it. Based on what I had read in the media, the film was to be an extremely frank and disturbing look at the last hours of Jesus' life, not ...

Advantages: tells the story with great authenticity and vivid strokes; good performances; language stroke pays off. Disadvantages: extremely violent and confronting; not for a soft stomach or heart
...since I walked out of the cinema, and some of the images thrust in my face are still embedded in my mind. And they probably will be for a while. This is the sort of high-impact cinema that has been missing from the bland, over-hyped and overproduced morass of offerings emanating from pretty much anywhere in this new millenium.
Mel Gibson's opus is pretty much a direct translation from the Gospels of the New Testament of Jesus of Nazareth's last ... ...another thing altogether! The movie starts off in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prays the night away, hoping for some sort of salvation or relief from the fate that he knows he is to face. Things move apace as his betrayal by the disciple Judas is swiftly revealed, and he is arrested and marched off to the Temple to face the Sanhedrin. What follows is a fairly much bare-bones translation of the horrors inflicted upon Jesus. Almost everyone ...

Advantages: The simple fact that it's about Jesus. Disadvantages: The sheer scale of blood and vivid scenes.
The night before last I was on my way to the local Indian to get a takeaway. I had no plans to get anything else. But, as I have to walk past Blockbusters, I noticed that this film, The Passion Of The Christ, is now out on DVD. So, I bought it. The funny thing is, the man who served me said, "You do realise this is subtitled?". "Er, yes, that's one of the reasons I'm buying it!" was my reply.
I hadn't seen it in the cinema and was a slightly unsure ... ...hype in the news and media at the time. But, until you've seen the film, you'll be left wondering what all the hype was about.
Yesterday I decided to watch it. I must admit, I was slightly nervous whilst placing the DVD gently into my Alba DVD player. I'd seen clips of it on telly, and had an idea what to expect.
As I said earlier, this film is subtitled. The language spoken is Aramaic, Hebrew and Latin. The subtitles are big and easily read, and ...

Advantages: Good Acting, Disadvantages: Quite Barbaric In Places
The Passion of the Christ released in 2004 and directed by Mel Gibson is a film that I have only recently seen for the first time. At the time of its release I made a conscious decision to avoid watching this film due to the huge amount of hype that surrounded it.
Having now watched this film I am left with a mixture of different thoughts and feelings. I am not a religious person and this is also another reason why I probably did not rush out to ... ...big name Hollywood Actors amongst the cast but that all of the dialogue was spoken in a mixture of Latin and Aramaic, with English subtitles displayed across the screen.
The entire script for this film is taken from chapters 14 and 15 of Mark's Gospel, something that I confess to not be completely familiar with. Having said that I have been brought up within the Church of England and although I have not worshipped in a Church since I was a Child, ...

...myself, but am interested in the history of religion, and am, I feel, very broad minded and I think that is probably a required trait to get the most out of this film. As with most sensitive subjects, if you already have an unwaving opinion of the matter at hand you will not learn much from the experience. So it was with the requisite open mind that i sat down to watch what has become one of the most controversial films of the moment.
The film covers ... ...Christs life are covered in the story, the period from betrayal by Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane, to the Crucifixion. One factor that has been much talked about is that the film has been made using the languages of the time, Aramaic and Latin, both dead languages as far as the modern listener is concerned. The film is subtitled in English and far from detracting from the film, it seems to add a dimension of reality to the portrayal of events. ...

Advantages: Shows the real love Jesus has for us Disadvantages: Is a difficult film to watch that leaves you feeling battered
...a review on one of the best films ever made? How do I begin to tell you about the power and strength this film had? About the honesty and brutality that marked Jesus's death?
As a Jewish Christian I had come to see the film from two angles. One to see whether this film was really as antisemitic as the hype would have it be. My answer to that is no it is not antisemitic. It is truthful to historical fact. The truth is that the Jews handed Jesus over ... ...died for everybody not just the Jewish people. Jesus would have died no matter who put him to the cross because He loved us that much He would have died. Therefore the antisemitic claims about this film are wrong and are probably made by people who haven't even been to see the film. Let's not forget the fact that Jesus Himself was Jewish.
The second angle I went to see this film from was a Christian angle. What it did to me as a Christian was that ...

Advantages: Powerful, great costumes Disadvantages: Why would you want to watch that much sadistic violence?
I watched Mel Gibson’s controversial The Passion of the Christ when it was on TV on Easter Sunday (yes, I have that much of a backlog of reviews!). I’m not religious at all, but I figured this would be the most fitting time to watch it, it there is such a time.
Obviously, it tells the story of the final 12 hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, from his betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane, to his final crucifixion. Along the way we see flashbacks ... ...on the mountain, and we follow Mary Magdalene, somebody and somebody as they follow Jesus’s torturous final moments.
That’s probably the shortest plot summary I’ve ever done, because firstly everybody knows the story already, and secondly this film is more about the experience than the story.
I must say, before I go on to talk about Mel Gibson’s sadistic violence and such, that this film is undeniably powerful. It will surely be more resonant to ...

...a sinking feeling from all the reviews I had read of Mel Gibson's infamous movie, The Passion of the Christ, that I wouldn't care much for it and yet when a strong Christian friend offered me her DVD copy, I decided to see for myself what all the fuss was about. My only consolation is I didn't pay for the, um, torture.
The overly long movie, even at two hours, but replete with requisite slow-mos at key religious moments, offers the Roman Catholic ... ...life of the much-suffering Jesus of Nazareth, portrayed courageously by the quite handsome with European features, white-skinned Jim Cavaziel. I've heard that he's so religious that he started a prayer time before work on the set and the one day he forgot to lead it he was stuck by lightening. Well, that sounds like an apt punishment, doesn't it now?

Advantages: Gets the bile going, one way or another. Disadvantages: Poor storytelling, terrible CGI, redundant actors.
"The Passion of the Christ" is Mel Gibson's cat o' nine tails, which he uses to flog his audience for two hours with a message. You come to realise this about midway through, when Jesus, yet to be sentenced, takes a prolonged thrashing by Pilate's henchmen. With Jesus' birth and life cut out, we are forced to focus on his brutalisation and eventual crucifixion. This is what he suffered for our sins, and you are going to suffer it aswell.
The reason ... ...'The Passion of the Christ' on the same day as I saw The Rock in 'Welcome to the Jungle'. 'The Passion' is depressing in the way that however much you long for the drunken, leering Roman torturers and the hypocritical Jewish high priests to get their comeuppance, you know it's not going to happen.
For all it's power - I'm not sure that's the right word, because I've yet to decide whether it's a good movie - it's a woefully imbalanced affair. The ...

...very hard to believe that the Mel Gibson, as the main actor, of some idiotic commercial trash Hollywood productions, can even think this way. Maybe the guy went to be influenced by some Christian sect; therefor he decides to "redeem for his sins". The sins attached to his Hollywood life-style. I even heard the information that he’s often guest in the Monastery of Hilandar, Orthodox Christian Monastery in Greece, booked only for men [to women ... ...England. Prince Charles actually donated the monastery after the recent big fire, couple months ago. I mean yea, the monastery did not received big donation from Greek or Russian Orthodox Christian Society, but from Prince Charles, who, as the rumor say, comes to monastery to paint in peace. Is this all well done Christian propaganda or Gibson’s personal insight about Christianity and last days of Jesus Christ, we’ll never know?
However, ...

...know what that did to the cat!) The write-ups were very mixed; some saying it was far too violent, other saying it was a true depiction of Christ’s last twelve hours. I even understand the Jews got upset at the way in which they were portrayed in the film - as barbaric.
My wife wasn’t quite so keen on watching the film, due to hearing other people shedding tears during the course of the 2 hours.
We sat and watched it on Saturday afternoon, and ... ...almost had me reaching for the remote…Call me old fashioned but I like to understand what the people are saying – not having to read captions underneath the pictures you’re supposed to be viewing (it was a challenge for me as my wife often reminds me that men simply can’t do two things at once – it’s a fact apparently). So instead of giving up at the first hurdle – I had a point to prove and continued to watch it.
The storyline is solely dedicated ...
