...that this night could hold the very meaning of our lives" This is the second part of the Matrix "Trilogy". I don't like calling it a trilogy because it simply isn't. It's a collection of movies, comic strips, games, short stories. The matrix is far bigger than three movies. It is like star wars, but star wars has a far wider reach. I mean the matrix has still remained focussed around a smaller area. So all of the bits fit in far better with each ... ...It's also the most complicated part of the Matrix "Entity". I have already watched this at least 3 times. I've now watched it another 2 times in preparation for this review. I've also intently listened to the speech given by the architect several times to try and decipher it. So here goes.

Advantages: Good entertainment Disadvantages: tooo much hype
Smith, ‘Mr Anderson, the stink of humans is all around; this building is positively overflowing with the odour of your kind, what possibly could attract so many to one place’
Neo, ‘Huh, it’s a cinema; which ever one of you said that’
Morpheus ‘Do you ‘think’ that smell you refer to is ‘real’, do you ‘believe’ that talking in ‘riddles’ adds to the plot’, does wearing ‘black coats’ and ‘shades’ really make us more ‘cool’ and in the slightest bit ... ...over there to talk to the inconsequential French dude’
But I digress
Few Movies have been more hyped, more looked forward to and promised to deliver more than the ‘2nd’ instalment in the ‘Matrix’ trio. It was in my second year as a 3D effects animation student that the original ‘Matrix’ came out and, unfortunately, I never made it to the cinema to see it. Not so with it’s highly anticipated sequel (sorry, I don’t subscribe to the trilogy ethic), ...

...response. Some people just loved the action packed nature, whereas others liked the complicated philosophy attached to the story. Opinion was divided with most people going to either extreme, and few sought the middle ground.
Now, six months down the line, with a bit of perspective and hindsight, how does Matrix Reloaded measure up?

It's now six months since Neo (Keanu Reeves) discovered that he was The One, a Jesus-like messiah in a cyberspace ... ...energy. Humans are bred by the machines and plugged into The Matrix where they live their lives as normal, unaware of what is really happening to them.
In this time, Neo has become more comfortable with his role and his new found abilities and the group of rebels who have already been extracted are living their lives in the last city of humanity, Zion. This group of people is continually waging war with the A.I. entities in the hope of finally being ...

Advantages: The action and effects are bigger and better. Disadvantages: Loss of originality, screenplay is less absorbing.
The intense anticipation, hysterical hype and overwhelming clamour of expectation that preceded the release of The Matrix Reloaded could all be adequately captured in one simple question - Would it live up to its most illustrious predecessor? To answer the question I’d like to take you back four years to the release of said predecessor, a film that redefined a genre and easily lifted the bar for action films (which is what the Matrix is at ... ...only to enrapt and enrich the viewing experience. It left an audience disorientated, questioning our existence, mesmerised by the action sequences and blown away by the sheer audacious style and execution of a truly original movie. With these thoughts in mind it is no surprise that The Matrix Reloaded fails to live up to the original, but how could it? Stripped as it is of said originality and loaded by expectation to raise the bar to new and more ...

...should have gone to watch the film, rather than the baseball game. Having now seen the film, I have to feel as if I made the right choice.
I've now waited 10 days after my original intentions to see the film, and I have to say that it really wasn't worth the wait. Sure, it looks pretty good, and there are special effects and impressive stunts all over the place. But this was also true of the first film, and this time around it all just feels a little ... ...was so ground breaking at the time, particularly with regards to the effects used, that the public expects even more this time around. But when you've created a new method of filming, and some of the most impressive fight scenes in film, how much further can you go? The answer? Over the top!
As with the recent "X-Men" sequel, this film suffers slightly from not explaining anything from the past. If you're one of apparently few people who didn't ...

...with a definite emphasis on the style - but most importantly this was an action film that made you think. It was a film that stood out as something new and different, and in my opinion would have been much better if the Wachowski brothers had left it that way. The trick with 'The Matrix' was just that - and it's a trick that really only works once. Once you know what 'The Matrix' is, and that Neo is the one who has the capacity to destroy it, what ... ...but by its position as the second film within the trilogy, 'The Matrix Reloaded' just can't deliver the same thing. Maybe the Wachowski brothers know that, and that's perhaps why they are trying to baffle us with their barely penetrable techno-speak. The only 'surprises' come from the next ambitious action sequence - in all honesty it was a slice of style that was a little too rich for me to swallow with ease... It is now approximately six months ...

Advantages: Some inspired moments Disadvantages: Shoddy film making, dull characters, disappointing sequel
Such was the feverish anticipation of its cinema release that the Matrix Reloaded could never really fail. It could have been 200 minutes of blank screen, and everyone would still have flocked to see it. So as the Wachowski brothers sit back and count their millions, the world is left pondering a simple question.
“Is the Matrix Reloaded actually any good?”
Stick around, and I’ll let you know.

Advantages: Action-packed, fantastic special effects, excellent entertainment Disadvantages: Long, with a frustrating ending
The sequel to 1999’s blockbuster The Matrix sees the old favourites return with new challenges to face. It might be dressed up as a deep philosophical conundrum about choice and good versus evil, but in reality it’s nothing more than a souped-up action flick with pretensions. And I like it!
It’s still man against machines, but with 250,000 sentinels (the octopus-looking machines from the first film) closing in on Zion, it looks ... ...Agent Smith gone rogue, and the Oracle is again played by the late Gloria Foster, who died before the movie was released.
New characters this time around include Captain Niobe, Morpheus’ ex, played by Jada Pinkett-Smith (wife of Will Smith), Persephone, played by Monica Bellucci, and…remember the DIY-doing, drill-toting twins from ITV’s Better Homes? Well, they (Neil and Adrian Rayment) appear in their first feature film playing ...

Advantages: cutting edge effects, the freeway chase Disadvantages: the heavy handed philosiphy powering the story
The year 2003: the year of the sequel, without a doubt. Will Smith and Martin Laurence blow stuff up and shout at each other after eight years apart in “Bad Boys 2”. Schwarzenegger returns to do what he does best in “Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines”. Those Angles were at it again in “Charlie’s Angles Full Throttle”, Beautiful cars and beautiful women burned rubber in “2 Fast 2 Furious” (yes that was an innuendo; those who have been paying attention). ... ...and it was of course the year where we rejoined Neo, Morpheous and Trinity for another one of their mind blowing adventures in “The Matrix Reloaded”. For those without a Scooby Doo (Too: no that was this year), “The Matrix Reloaded” was the most highly anticipated film of the year amongst the final chapter of “The Lord Of The Rings” and “Kill Bill”. The film that saw the return of legendary ‘bullet time’ that had been ripped off considerably by other ...

Now I would say that this is my favourite one but now looking back at the first one and remembering how good it was i would say this was second best. I’m going to start with the special effects this time because the matrix is famous for its bullet time and wire fu stuff. Now I would have to say that this film has the best special effects there is really. Because some of the martial arts that they do are just amazing. They are really the masters of wire fu. The highway scene is probably the most remembered bit of the whole thing I can think of. ...

Advantages: outstanding special effects, great action. Disadvantages: the story becomes far too complex and boring
Well its here, the 4 year wait through and the Matrix Reloaded steams in to the cinemas.
The build up has been very long and people have had very high hopes, and although not utterly disappointing, it does not match up to its prequel.
So the story is pretty much that a quarter of a million sentinels (squirmy squid machines) are digging down into the ground in order to destroy the one remaining ‘free’ humans city Zeon. Well this pretty much sets ... ...must go into the Matrix to receive the prophecy from the oracle. A war must therefore be led against the machines in order to rescue Zion.
Neo, being the one, leads the race too recieve the prophecy from the oracle. It is a minority that believes that this will end the war, Morpheous being the strongest believer, but it is what they think is a practical idea seeing that Zion has never been under such threat by the machine world and any alternate ...

...that claim 'stunning special effects'. The first Matrix film was sold on that principle - but it was also a neat, self-contained story that still left enough loose ends for potentially exciting sequels. It seemed convoluted at first, but the basic premise of the film was fantastic, and the concept - although complicated - was carefully explained through the narrative, so you could pick it up first time and go back to brush up on the details and intricacies.
... ...movie - certain to become the benchmark for a new century of special effects and ever-evolving technology - I went to see the sequel with a certain sense of apprehension. I had seen various TV previews, and one of the 'Animatrix' animated trailers (the latter had a beautiful-Asian-lady-looses-clothes-in-knife-fight aspect which was very off-putting - luckily it is completely irrelevant to this story). 160 minutes later, I came out of the movie overwhelmed, ...

...waiting with baited breaths for The Matrix Reloaded and are still waiting with baited breaths for the end of The Matrix Reloaded. That is because there wasn’t one. The use of ‘To be Concluded’ was a pretty poor attempt to draw in an audience for the third film. Also, the first film was good as part of a trilogy, but easily made a damn good film on its own. The Matrix Reloaded was by no means comprehensible without having already watched its predecessor. ... ...and see this. Now for the story itself:
Morpheus was an astounding character in the first film; a God-like figure, the sort of man you had respect for and a great faith in. In The Matrix Reloaded he’s evolved into a jargon-waffling beefcake who has little status and doesn’t really know a great deal very much. Firstly, we are introduced to the city of Zion, which seemed very tacked-on, like the writers hadn’t really thought about that when they started ...

Advantages: The usual awesome fight scenes and special effects Disadvantages: Thoroughly confusing plot, too much pseudo-philosophising.
After waiting four long years, the sequel to the phenomenally successful film The Matrix by the Wachowski brothers has finally been released. After a 270 day shoot (some movies are filmed within a month) and helped by a huge amount of hype, a Cannes launch party reputed to have cost over £1 million, and enough press coverage to have helped pulp several rain forests, the film has taken a quite astonishing £180 million in under 4 weeks since its premiere ... ...of several small countries, yet the film is only just beginning to break even, as it is reported to have cost Warner Brothers over $300 million (£180 million) to put together.
But the big question is, despite all this money and time, is the film any good?
Well, that's a heck of a question to answer and not as simple as may first appear.
First, a brief recap. The original Matrix film in 1999 introduced us to Neo, later known as ?The One? played ...

Advantages: Mostly great special effects, superb action sequences Disadvantages: Too much information to digest in one sitting
Essentially, the problem the Wachowski brothers were always going to have with The Matrix: Reloaded was that if it wasn't the greatest film ever made, they would have to take a hell of a lot of criticism.
