...this film was one of the ones I had chosen, & randomly enough, a film that Snarf had never seen - being in the film making industry, it is very rare that I can pick a film that Snarf has never seen, and actually gives the thumbs up! Right, so where to start with this film, it is incredibly difficult to review, due to the story line, so first thing I should try and do is plonk it into some sort of category - I remember watching it around the same ... ...(1990), it has the same sort of feel to it as the aforementioned films, so I guess, I would lump it into a psychological thriller genre, how about - intelligent, thinking, psychological thriller? Yeah, that sounds pretty good, now for the difficult bit, the plot:-
~"Who are you?"~
It's night, we are introduced to Trevor Reznick (Christian Bale), we are watching through a window, he's rolling up a body in a carpet, we follow Reznick, in his pick-up ...

Advantages: Christian Bale is extraordinary, good plot, great suspense Disadvantages: slightly predictable twist if you've seen similar films.
...Potential spoilers ahead ******
The first thing that one will notice about this film is that it is method acting taken to the extreme. Christian Bale lost sixty-three pounds for the role of Trevor, the machinist, who hasn't slept in a year. Why he can't sleep, he can't remember. While it might not be fatal, insomnia has taken a terrible toll on him. Emaciated, paranoid and confused, he faces a life of guilt, anxiety and terror. His only friends, ... ...only solace, comes in the form of Stevie, a hooker whom he frequents who's taken a shine to him, and Marie, a server at the airport café he visits in the small hours of the morning. He has no idea why he is the way he is, or why it may be that he is getting thinner and thinner…
Things first start falling into place when his employer, worried about his weight-loss, suspects he may be using drugs, and asks him for a urine sample. Heading outside for ...

Advantages: Gripping, surreal, wonderful choreography Disadvantages: Maybe you won't understand it if your IQ is a tad low...
"The Machinist" is the story of a guy called Trevor Reznik (played by Christian Bale) who works as a machine operator, and who hasn't slept at all for months. As a result his health has deteriorated and he has lost considerable weight. As the film goes on, we learn more and more about the dark reason behind this loss of his ability to get a moment's rest. The film also features Jennifer Jason Leigh who appears as a call girl called Stevie.
We also ... ...and talks to someone on the machine floor who his managers don't seem to think is there at all.
It's very difficult to expand too much on this without giving away the plot, which obviously I don't want to do- I would much rather you saw the film and the plot dawns on you than if you already knew what was going to happen. Interestingly the left-field nature of this film and its subject matter led to it being financed and made in Spain by the Filmax ...

Quick review of The Machinist (DVD)
Chronic insomnia prevents title character from discerning fantasy from reality. Deeply traumatic repressed memory comes to the surface in very twisted, unpleasant ways. Very dark but relentlessly gripping film with an excellent performance from a stick-thin Christian Bale. ...
