...mind-blowing extended trilogy box-set of the immensely popular Lord of the Rings films is an absolute must-have for any fan of the series or fantasy stories of any kind. Gorgeously presented and smothered in artwork, each film is presented in its seamlessly extended form alongside an innumerable number of well-organised special features. These extensions include entire extra scenes lasting several minutes, or are sometimes extensions of scenes that were already screened in the cinema. Which scenes are extended and which scenes are added are marked clearly in the chapter lists both on the DVD menus and within the accompanying inlays.
The extensions add greatly to all 3 films, and are not arbitrary in any way. Each additional scene provides more information ...

...out there who have spent the last ten years holed up in a cave without any contact with the outside world then you probably don't know that Tolkien's mammoth book was eventually turned into three mammoth movies. The rest of us are split into two groups - those that probably want the film shown at their funeral and those that want it burned/buried instead of them at their funeral.

Anyway, let's get the preliminaries out of the way.....Middle Earth is suffering under the hand of Sauron. It has been many years since he walked the land but his power is returning. All he needs is the one ring to help restore him to his former glory and in turn to walk the world of man and raise it to the ground. He is a really evil bloke who you see for the first five minutes at the start of the first film. ...

...in one brilliant box-set, come the three extended editions of the Lord of the Rings – the absolute ‘must-have’ product for all fans of the films. Not only do we have the extended versions of the films, but also each one is packed with behind the scenes documentaries and photo galleries, commentaries and much much more. 'The Fellowship of the Ring' is the first part of 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy of books. The most read fiction work ever, LOTR is a fantasy that is so deep and detailed that it feels real. Tolkien spent years and years writing it, and so any film version needed to be a serious undertaking: Peter Jackson rose to the challenge. THE STORY: The film begins in Hobbiton, home of Frodo, Bilbo, Sam, Merry and Pippin the Hobbits. Just like ...

I make no apologies for either of these issues.
As great as these films are, in my opinion the books are greater. No-one should sit down to watch these movies without first having read J.R.R. Tolkien's masterpiece.

Advantages: A new insight into the world of film Disadvantages: None (Lots of time is needed!)
The Extended editions of the Lord of the Rings (LOTR) films are great for all who are real LOTR fans and those who really enjoyed the films at the cinema. With around two hours of extra footage not seen at the cinema, as well as hours of extra features from the history of Tolkein and his writings to the making of the film, this is a movie lovers dream come true!
The Extended versions of the LOTR films comprise of four discs in each set. The first ... ...into the running order of the film. This footage is the actual footage that was shot and had to be cut for the cinema versions. With each of the three movies containing 30 minutes plus of extra clips, this makes the movie as a whole (all three films) have a much more understandable story line that flows at great speed, adding more twists and more of an overall image of the plot as it unravels. The extra footage also allows the characters to be developed ...

...as they came out over the years. I got the first one 'The Fellowship of the Ring' for christmas one year after vowing not to give into watching The Lord of the Rings films because everyone else was. After I got it I ignored it for months but one day decided I'd have a look, felt a little rude not to. I am very glad i did watch it.

Sean Austin - Samwise Gamgee

Billy Boyd ... ...Agent Smith as an elf...) The actors and actresses are very good in this, high quality of acting makes this film even better.
The movies themselves are masterpieces, all the environment and special effects are all used perfectly to make these movies absolutely amazing. The story is of course that of J.R.R. Tolkien's and the very imaginative and vivid descriptions used by the author made this an almost impossible task. As always happens with movies ...

Advantages: Everything--virtually perfect! Disadvantages: it had to end :(
...start out by saying that the extended editions should be the only editions that New Line released. It's unfortunate that some people have only ever seen the theatrical versions--the additional and extended scenes add so much more depth! I love them!)
There is so much that one can say about these epic masterpieces that it is hard to decide where to begin. I guess a good place is the beginning.
Unless you've lived under a rock the past 6 or 7 years ... ...story of The Lord of the Rings: Frodo and his hobbit friends team up with elves, dwarfs, men, and a wizard to bring the evil One Ring to Mount Doom so it can be destroyed. Seems simple enough, right? Well, you should know better, especially considering this entire trilogy runs about 12+ hours long--there's a lot more to it than that.
Therein lies its beauty. Yes, this story is basically about a struggle between good and evil, but it is also about ...

...for any avid lover of the story of 'Lord of the Rings'. Not only does it include the complete 'Director's Cut' of all three films, but contains a massive amount of behind the scenes extras on the making of the whole complete film. The special effects are mindblowing and the music is breathtaking. There are memorable performances by all the actors, especially by Andy Serkis who played the remarkable 'Gollum'. Peter Jackson highly deserved his Oscar for creating a film of excellent quality which seems lacking in many films of this era.
The extras are extensive, interesting and the most complete behind the scenes footage I have ever seen. There are ...

I've been waiting for the extended set since the first movie 'Fellowship Of The Ring' came out. Having read the full works from Tolkien over 30 years ago as a schoolchild I had always hoped that one day this would go to film. The first few attempts by the film world to capture Middle Earth was dissapointing to say the least so when these came out I was champing at the bit to see them.
The extended versions are what seems to 'make' each movie by ... ...yet to sit and watch the whole extended trilogy in one sitting but believe me it's on the schedule..!!.
Many scenes in the movies were not in the books and Jackson altered characters in ways to enhance the movies I guess bearing in mind that part of his audience that had never read the books and to appeal to all types of cinemagoers. He succeeded in all ways and turned this into a true blockbuster series with the added delight that we are now to ...

The Lord of the Rings' is one of my favorite books, I have read it several times, and remember thinking the last time, about 3 years ago that if I made a film I'd want to make it of this, but wouldn't it be almost impossible. You can then imagine how strong my expectations were when I went to see the eagerly awaited first installment.
This film impressed me hugely, more than anything else because of how true it was to my imagination, both in the ... ...consistently from other fans of the books. Elijah Wood brought across the character of Frodo with the kind of haunted, frail courage that Tolkien captures so well in the books. Nor could I find any fault at all with Ian McKellan's Gandalf, Viggo Mortensen's Aragorn, and Sean Bean's Boromir, all of whom I thought were portrayed excellently. I could pick out instances where I did think, 'no, that's not right', however their seldomness in number would ...

Excellent conversion from book to film, a timeless classic! I can't get enough of the Lord of the Rings films, Peter Jackson really brought the tale to life.
