Not long enough

Advantages: More for the Lord of the Rings READERS!
Disadvantages: We had to wait a year for it

The extended LotR DVD is a masterpiece in terms of keeping to the original storyline, acting and special effects. For those of you who do not know the story it goes along the lines of this: A dark lord, Sauron, creates a Ring that controls many other rings and plans to take over Middle Earth, the (This is obviously a very oversimplified storyline!) first film sees Frodo, a small creature called a Hobbit, take this Ring on a journey to destroy it. ...
...the film as well as hours of 'Appendices'. The extra half hour encompasses scenes never shown in the original film and were in the book. The extra scenes are mainly designed for the fans who know the book well, so for just movie watchers it doesn't really offer much extra. The 'Appendices' have hours of behind the signs footage, a wonderful insight to how the book was transformed into the film. The 'Appendices' are again more for the fans who know ...

One box to rule them all

Advantages: Better story with the extra scenes
Disadvantages: Length: over 3 hours

The Lord of the Rings has enchanted people for many years. Finally, this amazing story has been turned into a film. Peter Jackson took it upon him to show us the world-famous story by JRR Tolkien on the silver screen. The film was a huge hit. Peter Jackson succeeded in transferring the story and the emotions of the book to the cinema. The sets and costumes looked amazing and the actors did a great job in bringing their character to life. The regular ...
...the entire world wanted to own this film. But is it worth it to spend a few extra pounds on the extended version? Let’s see what you get for the price of the extended version: you get extra scenes which were not shown in the cinema and you get two discs of extra features instead of one. The extra scenes explain the actions of a character even more than the theatrical version did, so you get more information on the character development. The extra ...

Quick review of The Lord Of The Rings - The Fellowship Of The Ring (Extended Version) (DVD)

The special effects are absolutely immense the acting is superb and although the story is slow going the detail is immaculate and its worth seeing just as a premise for the second and third. Much better than the theatrical edition and im sure fans of the book will benefit more and will hopefully be less disappointed with this version than they might be with the theatrical edition. i would recommend watching it if you have the whole day free as the film does last a long time but as i say it is worth watching. Also the special features will help with your appreciation of the film as you'll see the detail and precision that went into the sets. ...

The Director's Cut Gone Walkabout?

Advantages: Excellent Day/Night For A Film
Disadvantages: Could've Been On The Original DVD

Well, when I bought the original LOTR way back sometime last year, I was disappointed to find that there would be a director's cut, longer than the first edition by at least half an hour and you cannot help but sometimes feel cheated when they actually do this. However, that's not the point and the point of the LOTR is that it is a great film. Elijah Wood, to me, is developing his acting talents nicely and I especially enjoyed Sean Astin as his companion. ...
...it continues in the next film. The general plot of the film is that Frodo Baggins is on his quest to destroy a ring and that there's an evil Christopher Lee out to stop Frodo Baggins. The mere fact that Christopher Lee was here and in Star Wars at merely the same time is an excellent achievement for such a gifted and veteran actor such as himself. Ian Mcdiarmid is very well cast and the fight that he has with Christopher Lee during the film makes ...

wow - what a movie

Advantages: the extension to the story helps you understand the main characters more
Disadvantages: the movie being on 2 discs means an annoying break half way through

Having read The Lord of The Rings countless times i both looked forward to, and, was nervous of, the release of this first film in the trilogy. I shouldn't have worried though because i loved it. In my opinion Peter Jackson and team managed to bring Tolkeins world to life, whilst the actors made the characters seem almost as if there really are dwalfes, elfs and hobbits in real life. The story is quite fast moving, and is able to keep the viewers ...
...long, around 4 hours in the extended set, but if you liked the movie in the cinema you will certainly want to buy this. The extra footage in this extended set really adds to the whole feel of the film. There are some parts where, if you are familiar with the books you might be annoyed at some ommissions/ added bits. The exclusion of Tom Bombadil for example, or the inflated part of Arwen. However, all in all i can honestly say that i absolutely ...

...are a real lord of the rings fan that wishes to know more about the making of this visual epic than this will be a real treat for you. With hours of cast interviews, camera work, how effects were achieved, history on the book and the life of Tolkein story as well as the extended vesion the the fellowship of the ring, with the option of watching the whole things with talk overs from a variety of actors and crew members this is a must have box set ...
...set is probably more for the more envolved fans, for all of the people out there that loved the film and want to see the 30 minutes of extra footage but not go into detail about the cast, setting, making of and of Tolkein himself I would personally recomend sticking to the 2 disc set of the extended version. Also another warning that if you would like the amazing filming, special effects and the "I wonder how they did that" moments to stay a magical ...

Lord of the Rings. th fellowship of the ring

Advantages: Tells story of the fellowship in a brilliant way without reading 500 odd pages
Disadvantages: sitting down through 3hrs of the film which maybe uncomfortable although it's brilliant.

The lord of the Rings the fellowshp of the ring, despite what some critics may say stays as true as it can to the book. It follows the story of Frodo and Sam as they fight against middle earth to destroy the ring of Sauron. However, having to sit down for long periods of time may not be your packet of chocolates this is well worth having a numb bum! It's more lighthearted than full of fighting as which follows in the second film of the trilogy. It ...

This is awsome

Advantages: It's Great
Disadvantages: What Disadvantages

This film was great at the cinema. I think that the media, and people in general have established that fact already. But if you thought the cinema version was good, you just wait until you see this. This 4 DVD box set is out of this world. The film itself is great and has 30 minutes of extra footage added into it's already epic 3 hours. This footage is integrated seemlessly, you really cannot tell where it's been added. I saw the cinema version ...
...included. Then we come to the extra features. ALL 7 HOURS OF THEM! There are 7 hours of absorbing documentaries covering everything from Tolkein himself, to the CG effects in the film. There are documentaries on the cast, the sets, the locations, the editting, the scripting, the premiere, the music, the sound effects..... ....you get the picture. If you loved the film, you'll love this box set and at only £25 ish it's a fantastic buy. ...

A collection centerpiece

Advantages: An extreamly well made and exciting film
Disadvantages: A bit long for somepeople

When I first looked at the lord of the rings books I was lsightly overwhelemed, the best part of 400 pages each and a few inches thick. Very daunting for a 13 year old boy who struggles to read. however the films bought something alive for me, it was as if when watching the films New Zealand wasnt a small island somewhere on the other side of the planet but a new discovery, A new middle earth. The action was incredible the screenplay and acting was ...

The extended addition shows so much more of the ...

Have both sets 4 and 2 disc and I can’t seem to find some of the features on the 2 disc set on the 4 disc e.g. the lord of the rings.net featurettes. The extended version of the Fellowship of the Ring is brilliant.

Advantages: Not overly romatic and american
Disadvantages: Does not include enough of the book

In my opinion watching the extended version is well worth the extra money and time it takes. For any Tolkein lover this set of dvd's or the full box set is an amazing present. Unluckily the adventures in the old forest and the house of Tom Bombadil is not in this version. The film is considerably longer than the original fellowship dvd, so if you were dissapointed with what had been left out when you watched it in the cinema's, which the above proviso ...

Extended v. Regular edition

Advantages: many speical features
Disadvantages: pricy

The special extended version of Lord Of the Rings is abit pricy, but in my opinion it is well worth your money if you are big fan of the movies. It has a lot of special features in it that can keep you entertained for hours on end. I wouldnt recommend it for children or people who are not interesting in seeing how the movie was made a whatnot because that is alot of what the extra stuff on the DVD is. It also has a lot of deleted scenes and those ...
