The Fellowship of the Ring: Extended Edition

Advantages: Great cinematics, special effects, acting, location, extras
Disadvantages: none

■The Book■ The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is the first in the trilogy of films by director Peter Jackson taken from the 1930-40s novels by J.R.R.Tolkien. The books were published between 1937 and 1949. The Fellowship of the Ring was released in 1937. The story loosely follows on from an earlier work by Tolkien, 'The Hobbit'. This is a tale of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit, going on an adventure across Middle Earth and finding ...
...just the Shire. Well now Bilbo has grown old, gracefully it may be said, and due to his adventure is outcasted a little by his fellow Shire-folk. Well 'The Fellowship of the Ring' is the turn of Frodo Baggins, Bilbo's nephew who lives with him in Bag End. The story of the books is that Bilbo while on his travels around Middle Earth with the wise wizard Gandalf the Grey, he picked up a strange artifact: A ring. A ring he managed to win in a game ...

From shire to mine and mountain...great

Advantages: You will live longer
Disadvantages: It has to end

...sat every Sunday and recorded the excellent BBC radio 4 dramatisation (which incidentally had Ian Holm as Frodo, nice touch me thinks to be promoted to Bilbo). I had already read the book then, twice, but it is the community of imagination such masterpieces deliver which is the secret to their success, I wanted to know how other people had ‘seen it’, what the words of Tolkien’s conjured in their minds as they read it. Well now, thanks to the massive ...

See, I’m clearly ranting now so I’ll stop. ===================== What you won’t get from this opinion An outline of the story, if you’re reading this you already know it and if you don’t, others tell it better than I. A breakdown of every single feature on the DVD, too many, too many, too many A critique of every performance, the film is fabulous, buy it. I would have ...

I've been converted....

Advantages: Excellent graphics, ideal for fans - plenty of extra bits included, not too badly priced for what you get
Disadvantages: None

...know most people writing about the infamous Lord of the Rings will currently be writing about “The Two Towers” (the new one for all you who aren’t fans!) Me on the other hand, well I like to be different. You see I’m going to write about the first one, “The Fellowship of the Ring”. Why? Well because I’ve only just seen it, I haven’t yet seen “The Two Towers”! I borrowed the DVD from my sister ...
...watching the first film. The DVD was no ordinary DVD though, oh no, it’s a special extended edition. It’s a 4 disk set. You see my sister is a huge fan and so wasn’t content with the normal DVD set, oh no, it just HAD to be the special extended edition! I guess you’ll all know how good this film is, practically everyone who sees it thinks its great. Those who watch it just for the sake of it end up being fans too, no matter ...

LOTR gets the directors cut treatment

Advantages: Over 30 minutes of new footage
Disadvantages: The film is split over 2 discs

Lord Of The Rings has been re-edited and re-scored and made even better. LOTR runs for 200 minutes 30 minutes longer than the original release, but believe me it flies by and 200 minutes only seems like an hour and a half. Now I may be biased on this one, but I adore Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings and Peter Jackson has made a translation of the book to film. For those of you who don't know about "Lord Of The Rings", where have you been, then here ...

However they are not alone and are joined by Legolas the elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Aragorn, Boromir and his three Hobbit friends Merry, Pippin and Samwise. Their journey takes them through dark forests, dwarf mines and ...

My Special Ring Piece Revised edition

Advantages: It is Truly special
Disadvantages: none

...is quite possibly one of the hardest pieces I have ever had to do in my time on Ciao. I know it is not in the right place as I am writing about the Extended edition and not the one listed. But I was sick of waiting for Ciao to get off their backside and do something about it so it is here instead (I will transfer it over later when the category appears). Now I loved The Fellowship of the Ring movie! In fact it my gf and I went and saw it twice in ...
...The visuals were fantastic. The story was taut as a bow, and the action sequences were amazing. It was well deserved of its Oscar nominations and as most people I know have said it should have gotten the Best Film Oscar. So when the original DVD came out I just had to get it I was that hooked. I watched I enjoyed again what I saw and had a wail of a time. Then at the end of the 2 DVD’s jam packed with goodies was the trailer for the Special Extended ...

Flawless

Advantages: Every deleted scene is cut back into the movie
Disadvantages: May take a whole day to get through it all!

...to see this film in the cinema a few years back, I had no idea what Lord of the Rings was. I have never been so angry walking out of a cinema, not even after seeing 2 Fast 2 Furious, which was horrendous by the way. The reason for this however, wasn't because the film was bad ... It was because it was the best film I'd ever seen and I didn't know I had to wait for a year to see what happned next! The story is as you may or may not know from the ...
...uncles magical ring which was the power to turn it's wearer invisble - quite handy one would assume. However, things darken, as Gandalf the wizard (Ian McKellen) discovers that this ring is in fact "The One Ring" created by the dark lord Sauron. This part is quite difficult to explain. The ring doesn't just make the wearer invisble, but it corrupts you. Wearing the ring would make you do evil things, and nothing good can ever come of wearing it. ...

Hobbits in da house!

Advantages: An unforgettable fantasy adventure epic.
Disadvantages: None

When I saw the fellowship for the first time back in December of 2001 I was surprised by how good it was, I had never read the books before so I just went to the cinema as I would, not expecting much and it turned out to be great, though, as I saw it really late at night it was hard to concentrate on the story. The movie was sold out when we got to the cinema so we had to wait and go to the 8:30 showing, it was then delayed by a further 45 minutes ...
...of adverts and trailers before the film started. We came out in the early hours of the morning and were shattered. So that was why I couldn't wait for the DVD release because I wanted to see it properly. I decided to wait for this 4 disc edition because it had over 30 minutes extra footage. The original theatrical version of the movie was released on December 19th 2001 in the U.S and opened with around $94 Million in it's first week. The movie then ...

review of the lotr film!!

Advantages: its the lord of the rings
Disadvantages: none

...I still don’t get bored. The film has won 5 British Academy Awards including Best Film and Director, which speaks volumes. If you’ve read the book you will probably know the story line already. Cate Blanchett (Galadriel) opens the film with a longer version of these famous words: Three rings for the Elven Kings under the sky, Seven for the dwarf lords in their halls of stone, Nine for mortal men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark ...
...bring them all and in the darkness bind them, In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie. Basically , the Dark Lord, has gathered to him the rings of power, mentioned in the above, – the means by which he will be able to rule the world. All he lacks in his plan for domination is the Ruling Ring, which has fallen into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. (The leading character in J R R Tolkien’s The Hobbit). In a sleepy village in the Shire, ...

4 DISC's are better then 2.

Advantages: Excellent film with loads of extras which make the film complete.
Disadvantages: It is over 2 disc's so you have to change half way through.

...my girl friend, she wanted the Lord of the Rings DVD for Christmas and I had the agonising choice of either buying the extended version of the film for £32 or spend £10 less on the 2 DISC version, so being a little bit tight-fisted I went for the cheaper option. Which I now realise was a big mistake. The two DISC version is great and a really good buy, but since then a few people have told me that if you have not seen the extended version then you ...
...last week I was in the local blockbuster and I saw the extended version and I thought for a couple of quid it would be worth a borrow. The movie is over 4 discs and the film is about 3 hours and 30 minutes long and is spread over the first two discs. Disc 3 and 4 is made up of almost a history of the making of the film and is filmed and put together in the fashion that you were actually there during the making of the film. The box is quite thick ...

A Masterpiece

Advantages: Absorbing, Breathtaking, Comprehensive
Disadvantages: Long!, Big investment, Not for the 'Sword and Sorcery' phobic

...you get this far past the other reviews then you've a pretty good idea this is a highly rated piece of cinematography. Additionally, that all the reviews so far have been more than comprehensive. Consequently, I will look to keep this one shorter: A box set that provides hours of entertainment. The film itself is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. Peter Jackson and his assistant producers have given us the most absorbing and beautiful fantasy film, ...
...and Oscar nominations aplenty. The 4 DVD box set, however, is the most value for money 'set' I have come across. Not only is the 30+ mins of additional material in the film blended seamlessly whilst adding to the storyline, but the real benefit is the interviews, narratives, anecdotes and video footage that provides more material than a Derbyshire woolen mill. From initial concept, through planning, filming, sets, characters, cast, and much more ...

A wizard arrives exactly when he means too!

Advantages: Shear depth and pleasure to watch
Disadvantages: Some might find it a tad long

...had never read any of the books and knew very little of the story. I am now converted and I am working my way through the books. I saw this at the cinema first and thought it was a fantastic film to start with. This Extended edition adds more scenes and embelishes on other parts that the original cut did not. This version is slightly closer to the book. Obviously it does not stay true to the book because if it did it would be 9 hours long rather ...
...story is based on the J.R.R. Tolkien's classic book trilogy. This is the first part and follows the story of Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) who comes into possession of an ancient magical ring so powerful it invariably corrupts anyone who wears it. In order to prevent the ring's erstwhile owner, the dark lord Sauron, from reclaiming the ring and taking over Middle-earth, a motley band of comrades set out to destroy it in the fires of Mount Doom, where ...

Impressive Boxed Set

Advantages: Entertaining, well made, a host of great extra features
Disadvantages: Takes a long time to watch the extra features!

I loved the film and wanted to get it on DVD - it was my husband's idea to get the special boxed set, 4 DVD edition - I don't normally watch the extras much on DVDs. In this case however, I made an exception as I got caught up with them when hubby started to watch! Not only is the film excellent in its own right, but when you see the amount of detail that went into creating and directing it, you watch it again with new eyes. The extras cover a whole ...
...was great to see how the cast "became" their character, and how they formed such strong friendships with each other over the time they were shooting the movie, not to mention th accidents, dangers and lengths some of them went to in order to avoid flying (Sean Bean actually - fascinating to watch how he got up that mountain without being in a helicopter like the rest of them!). I was interested to hear the different ways the initial sequence was ...

"All that once was is lost..."

Advantages: Tons of extras, extended and new scenes, epic movie
Disadvantages: It's too good!

Lord of The Rings is the epic story of Frodo Baggins and his friends Merry, Pippin and Sam, who have to leave their home in The Shire and set out on a quest to save Middle Earth. I don't want to spoil the story for anyone who may not have seen this film yet, so I'll keep the rest of the summary minimal. They end up in Rivendell, a great Elvish city, and are joined by Aragorn, Gandalf, Boromir, Gimli and Legolas: The Fellowship of The Ring. They set ...
...evil forces of the Dark Lord Sauron. This four disc DVD has tons of new and extended scenes carefully added back into the film, and as Peter Jackson himself has pointed out, this is not a "Directors Cut" of the movie. This version is for fans of LOTR books who really wanted to see a little more in the movie. The cinema version of The Fellowship of the Ring was 178 minutes long, and this extended version runs at 208 minutes! The DVD menu tells ...

#1 in best movies I have ever seen

Advantages: More scenes with Legolas!!!! :D etc...
Disadvantages: Nothing

I've watched the Lord of the Rings Trilogy so many times I know some of the lines by heart. It is officially one of the best movies I have seen made so far for this part of the 21st century. How could I not have this DVD?! ;) People keep complaining about how long the extended version is, but I assure you its excellence completely makes up for the time. The effects are great, the acting is great, the script is great, the storyline is great, the ...
...I hear of Lord of the Rings; but I was so awed by this wonderful movie(not just Legolas ;) ) and I decided to do my research and watch it again and again. Each time I watch it, there's something there that I haven't noticed before, and it never ever gets boring. The movie is basically on the story of Bilbo handing down the ring to Frodo his nephew who realises he must destroy the ring in the fiery pit of mordor at the council of Elrond Half Elf ...
