...figures. Sadly anyone familiar with the inspirational novels will instantly realise that Hollywood has taken many detrimental liberties with the characters. James Robinson’s script, adapted from the work of Alan Moore, is frankly insipid and also, continuity wise, plain careless. Curiously Stephen Norrington director of the fantastic Blade directs the action, in particular the fight scenes, in such a manner as to make it almost incomprehensible at ... ...Phantom (Richard Roxburgh) one of the flimsiest movie villains you're ever likely to encounter. Each League member possesses a unique ability, although almost identical motives. In defeating The Phantom they hope to exonerate themselves from their former sins and, oh yes, save the world. Sean Connery adds nothing to his already impressive résumé, merely re-covering old ground. The customarily exuberant Stuart Townsend lazily plays Dorian Grey while ...

Advantages: an interesting film, there are few films in this sort of style Disadvantages: a lot of the acting was blank, and the characters were underdeveloped
The League of Extroadinary gentlemen.. sounds good? it did for me, thats why i saw it in the cinema.. look good? yeah, i thought so too. But its not that good. For a start; the title. A pretty cheesy and unoriginal title, and, its not even correct, as there is a woman in this group (if you can call her that, she looks pretty manly to me - and she sounds like it too). The setting is at the turning point of the century, but this is really over-emphasised. ... ...it for a spin down the streets of venice". yes, i know, unbelievable. but it happened. Most of the acting was not believeable, with the acception of the actor who plays Rodney Skinner (the invisible man), but even he is not that believable.
Here is the rest of the cast and their "characters" if that is what you can call them (with due acceptions to the characters i have mentioned above).

Advantages: Great Action and good characters Disadvantages: A bit too much special effects
When I read all the tabloid reviews of this movie and saw the trailers I expected something completely different than I got. What I got was a classy X-Men that made me think about the literary classics I have read over the years. While it is still essentually a comic book action movie when you have characters such as Dorian Gray, Dr Jeckyl/Mr Hyde, Tom Sawyer, The Invisible Man, and Allan Quartermain you can't go too wrong.
I have read the comics ... ...comic book heroes out of the moral messages and misogyny of some of the greatest literary characters of our time. Now this movie was based in the late 1800's in the true Vitcorian climate of suspicion and the industrial revolution. The scenary and landscape suggest this although possible a bit before its time with a few technology items - but hey its a movie.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie even if part of me was always trying to find fault ...

Advantages: Clear sound Disadvantages: Few extras, subtitling on the extras is a bit off
Having seen this film at the cinema and enjoying it somewhat, I bought this DVD when it was on sale. I'm glad that I bought it cheaply as the DVD itself is kind of disappointing.
Although I have yet to read the graphic novel on which it is based, I was intrigued by the premise of the film, that the action adventure novels of the late Victorian era are based on real stories and by the characters chosen. That did however lead to some problems as decided ... ...translated onto the screen, especially with Mina Harker's character, and I would have hoped that Tom Sawyer would have grown up into a less boring adult. I don't wish to go into the plot further as I feel doing so would give away too much information.
The film itself suffers from being shrunk onto the small screen because the special effects don't look quite as special, and there are few extras on the DVD. One of the extras says that Peta Wilson ...

Advantages: A few good action scenes, good effects. Disadvantages: A bit flat and rushed. Acting was less than perfect.
...Townsend, so I went to the effort of seeing it at the cinema. Though I did subsequently buy this film on DVD, I did wait until it was cheap. The premise is that all of the protagonists from various Victorian literature all get together to fight a common Enemy. We have the invisible man (though not the original), Dracula's Bride, Dorian Grey, Captain Nemo and Jekyl/Hyde. I can't remember who Sean Connery was supposed to be... Perhaps he was just made ... ...and Townsend's acting was a tad wooden. Mildly entertaining, but not filmic genius by a long way. The main issue I had with it was that it all felt a bit rushed. The film isn't particularly long, and could have done really with being a longer. Watchable, but nothing special. ...

Advantages: Excellent Movie From Start To Finish Disadvantages: If Your Not A Classic Novel Reader Then The Film Will Be Difficult To Understand
...reading classic novel books from the past, then this movie, will be difficult for you to understand (Character Wise)
The special effects & storyline are mind blowing & truly fantastic.
The whole atmosphere of London in the late 1800's is spot on to the true thing & no detail has been left out.
Only one downside & that was Mr Hyde, who I personally thought, was the hulk with a bad day under a sunlamp & its character could have been alot better,in this ... ...for children in my eyes,as the vampire scenes, are most vicious indeed with scenes of blood in detail.
The Nautilus Submarine was outstanding & could have not been better (The Best I Have Ever Seen)
The storyline is full of adventure & kept well within its time period apart from Nemo's car, being more like a batmobile dressed as a wedding a car.
I hope they will release part 2 soon. ...

Advantages: Lots of extra items on dvd Disadvantages: too much cgi
...sean connery and shane west.
The preformance of the actors in this film is good but throughout the film there is a bit too much reliance on CGI. Though it doesnt really ruin the film, i would still recommend it and i would definately pay to see it at the cinema and i have the dvd, which contains alot of extra features, including deleted scenes.
I think the storyline of the film is great as it includes characters such as the invisible man, dr.jekyl ...

Quick review of The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen (DVD)
Slick but ultimately empty. I can't think of any other film that feaures so many characters - Quatermaine, Cpt Nemo, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer, The Invisible Man, a vampiress, the Phantom - and yet none of them are developed properly. But at least it is quite exciting getting introduced to them all. It's not a great film, but at least it's good fun and has some great special effects. Badly written, well shot. ...

Advantages: Has a good beginning Disadvantages: Soon gets boring
When I saw the trailer for "The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen" it looked really good but when I saw the film in cinemas the beginning was good but then it got really boring. The film begins when a villain called the Phantom attempts to destroy the greatest cities of Europe and to stop him a group of people with special abilities have been employed by "M" to stop him but then it turns out the villain is "M" the employer of "The League Of Extraordinary ... ...how the hell do they know how to drive a car if they weren't invented yet (as it is set in the late 19th Century). Sean Connery is a great actor even in his days as 007 agent, James Bond but he should of never played a role in this film because this film was badly done. If there was anything I could change in this film it would be everything including the story. I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy this but it does have some good action in it, just ...

Advantages: Great SFX, good acting, well directed, good story line. Disadvantages: Slighty too far-fetched, bad continuity.
LXG isn't the worst comic book movie I've ever seen, but it definitely isn't the best. Sure it’s entertaining, it’s dark, the SFX are great and the plot kind of makes sense, however, the characters are somewhat cardboard (there’s not enough time is spent getting to know them before the explosions kick in), it is far too inconsistent and the movie as a whole lacks any kind of heart or soul. Oh, and a flick set in Victorian London that does not contain ...

...rushed things a bit in the movie. It all felt hasty. Sean is really good, but we all knew that already. But it is definatly worth watching. I missed alot of the juicy special effects tho. And as i said, it was hasty. The story felt like it was written in a haste, like the author had not taken time to write, but just wanted to be done with it as soon as possible. I liked it anyway because it was a bit different compared to other movies that are currently ...

...watch. It had all the most classic characters of our history brought back to life and joining forces in order to save the world. The graphics were great also. My favourite bit would have to be of Countess Dracula changing and feeding. It was graphically done nicely. When a classic film is being out together you really have to resseacrh the characters so that the actors and actresses portray their roles in every detail of what myth has showed them ...

...after bad film. As if the 'Avengers' wasn't bad enough he decided to take up the opportunity to appear in this Comic book adaptation. Stephen Norrington, director of 'Blade', overwhelms you with totally incomprehensible action sequences, ridiculous looking digital effects (including the rather amusing Venice scenes) and a tonne of explosions in a vein attempt to distract us from the non-existent plot, poor acting and the no name supporting cast. ...
