The King’s Speech FILM ONLY REVIEW I had heard a lot of great reviews about The King’s Speech which was released in the UK at the beginning of 2011, though from the synopsis I had read briefly I did not think that it would be a film for me at all. After looking at the cinema showings, though, for an afternoon of entertainment with my mum and sister, we found that The King’s Speech was the most desirable film that we were all prepared to watch together and so into the cinema we went, armed with a bottle of cola and some expensive sweets. ******************************** A GENETIC ANOMALY ... more

This is a review of the film as seen at the cinema 7 BAFTAs, Best Actor, Best Picture, Best Director and 4 Oscars!! When I went to see the King’s Speech in early January the film hadn’t won these awards but I could see that it certainly stood a good chance as it is an excellent film which captivated me from the beginning and kept my interest throughout, in fact I didn’t want it to finish. **The story** As this is a true story based on historical fact I don’t think spoilers are a problem so I will give a little more detail than usual. In the years between the two world wars Prince Albert , Duke ... more

Bertie is the second son of reigning King George V. He knows he is not going to be crowned King as that falls to his elder brother Edward but soon Bertie realises that all might change when his brother falls in love with an American woman who has already been divorced twice. Bertie feels he is not able to make a good King as he has a speech problem. He has suffered from this since the age of 5 and despite seeing many doctors he has not been able to over come it. After the death of his Father his brother become King and Bertie feels even more pressure as his brother is not a suitable King due ... more

Advantages Advantages The backdrops - Wonderfully researched - Narrative

Disadvantages Disadvantages Only one goof - Helvetica text on microphone was only invented in 1957

Cast: Colin Firth - King George VI Eve Best - Wallis Simpson Geoffrey Rush - Lionel Logue Guy Pearce - Abdicated Edward - also referred to as David Helena Bonham Carter - Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Michael Gambon - Ailing King George V Timothy Spall - Winston Churchill Director: Tom Hooper Crackling like an open wood fire, I recall hearing the whirring noise of decrepit tape and King George VI, eloquent tones, during a history lesson. I put the long drawn out recording down to the dreadful quality of the audio. Each sentence was slow and encapsulated extreme precision; all in keeping with the ... more

Advantages Advantages Fantastic performances, clever script that balances wit and drama, stirring finale

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not so much actual content

When one is King, one cannot afford to do a lot of things. For example it will be frowned upon if one is interested in marrying an American (shock horror), even more so if that American is a twice-divorced woman in a time of conservative, proper, posh ideals. So much so that one will have to abdicate one’s throne if one wishes to choose love above all else. This is what happens to the eldest son of King George V (Michael Gambon), King Edward VIII (Guy Pearce, an Australian actor who puts on a remarkable posh English accent), who decides to follow his heart and leave the monarchy for good. Advantages Advantages Solid cast and sensible performances, never less than interesting.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Staggeringly ill-conceived, when you think about it...

Swotting up for this review, I checked out a list of crap jobs, and I was a little surprised to find "English Monarch" wasn't in there. I mean seriously, who would want to be King or Queen? I tried making this point recently, a little naievely, to a Scot, but he wasn't very sympathetic. I wasn't trying to make a point in a imperialist or royalist way, I just genuinely feel sorry for the Queen. Poor old boot. Someone born into extreme poverty can make it to wealth and fame through a combination of hard work, talent and luck; someone born into extreme privilege will find it virtually impossible ... more

I don't think anyone can fail to have come across the multi award winning King's Speech recently. Along with Black Swan, it's been one of the most talked about and praised films of the year. I watched both these films almost back to back and prepared to love Black Swan and be underwhelmed by The King's Speech, the result was much the reverse and I have to say that this film deserved it's many awards, and is the far superior of the two. The film stars Colin Firth as George VI and how he struggles and eventually conquers his stammer, with the help of unorthodox speech therapist, Lionel Logue ... more

Anyone in the UK (if not further!) must be familiar with The King’s Speech by now. Not only is it at the top of the UK box office at the moment, but it just earned 12 Oscar nominations too and should hopefully walk away with several of those later this year. For me, The King’s Speech is a Helena Bonham Carter film, having been a fan of hers for over twenty years, so she was the main reason I went to see it. So it was that on a cold Wednesday evening in January, I went along to the local cinema with my new boyfriend to watch the film. The plotline of the movie centres around Bertie – or as we ... more

If must be difficult to live in the spotlight with all around you expecting you to cope with the pressures of the press. However, it must be much worse if you are a member of the Royal family and must make speeches, especially when you have a stammer, as is the case in the 2010 film, The King’s Speech. The King's Speech is about Prince Albert, (Bertie) Duke of York, and the father of Queen Elizabeth II, who struggled with public speaking to a stammer which he had since a child. His wife, Elizabeth persuades him to visit an Australian speech therapist, Lionel Logue to help improve his public ... more

As the winner of 4 Academy Awards and 7 Bafta's, The Kings Speech for me really lived up to its triumphs. It's the story of King George VI, or Bertie as his family call him, who has suffered most of his life with a debilitating speech impediment. This wouldn't really be a problem if not for the fact that he is a prince and from time to time is pushed into making speeches by his father. He feels very relived that the role of king will not fall to him once his father dies, however, when his brother King Edward VIII abdicates to marry a divorcee he very reluctantly becomes King. This scares him ... more
