THE DISNEY GIANT REDONE

Advantages: Great storyline and voices
Disadvantages: Not recommended much

...crashed on us and all the 'new suggested items' were put on hold for weeks on end!? Then suddenly one day all the hundreds of opinions poured onto the latest opinions page... Well that was when I posted this opinion, I love this film and I spent a while making my op just as good but I hardly got any reads out of it, so I've made a few changes and if any of you are interested, Read on... I watched this film on TV one weekend, I was looking forward ...
...that good, I was wrong! The film was great and almost instantly decided to write an opinion on it! Anyway onto The Iron Giant itself, the film was originated from a poem written by famous poet, Ted Hughes. The poem was supposedly written for his children but the idea of the Iron Giant was used to create the film by DISNEY and as expected it met all its expectations. The film tells the story about a young boy called Hogarth Hughes who one night comes ...

Whereas Disney’s recent releases (Mulan, The Emperor’s New Groove and Dinosaur spring to mind) have not achieved the success of their earlier releases, such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid, animation features that are coming from the folds of other production studios are doing roaring trade, Shrek being an excellent example. One other such animation feature is The Iron ...
...is an animation adaptation of the Ted Hughes book ‘The Iron Man’, which most of us probably read in school. The film tells the story of Hogarth Hughes, a young adventurous boy who makes a discovery that is feared by most but terrifically exciting to him. Whether the film actually stays true to the original story, I’m afraid I can’t say because it’s been so long since I have read it. Hogarth lives with his mother, Annie, ...

Advantages: Visually stunning
Disadvantages: Might be put off due to comparisons with a classic book

The year is 1957 a lone satellite, Sputnik, drifts in orbit around Earth, its monotone pips the only sound to violate the silent void. Far off past the moon an object appears, at first a dot, then rapidly growing in size. It throw plumes of steam into the velvet black as it hurtles towards earth right into the eye of a storm, in more ways than one. Off the coast of Maine… A tiny boat is tossed around on a mountainous sea like a matchbox…. ...

A True Giant Of A Movie

Advantages: see review

...clutching a ticket to see The Iron Giant. I had not been greatly impressed by most of the recent Disney offerings(A Bugs Life aside) and the thought of seeing a non-Disney movie with a voice-over cast list of B-movie standard actors didn’t do much to whet the appetitie. However, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised to find that The Iron Giant was not another Disney-wannabe but rather a thought provoking morality tale packed with social ...
...both adults and children. The hokey comedy element is not the main feature of The Iron Giant as is the case with many other animated cartoons, but a complementary element of the movie as a whole and as such I feel that it works well on both adult and child levels. Set in 1950’s America, we are first introduced to a young boy named Hogarth. He is a lonely child, the son of an over worked waitress(voiced by Jennifer Aniston) and makes various ...

Advantages: One of the best animated films ever.

...this wonderful film tanked at the box-office. The lure of the repugnant Pokemon is obviously more powerful than I first suspected. There are so many reasons why The Iron Giant should have done better financially than it actually did, and why it will be regarded as a classic from here on in. Firstly, it appeals to all ages from 8 to 80 years old. The story, based on the excellent children's book "The Iron Man" by the late Ted Hughes, concerns a giant ...
...Since the action is set during 1950's America, the authorities perceive it as a (possibly Russian) threat and attempt to destroy it. However, the robot soons proves himself a hero and more human than...well, a human! If the climax of the film fails to leave you with a tear in your eye then you might be a robot yourself. The film is simple enough for small children without being patronising, yet is full of humour and references that adults will appreciate. ...

The "Iron Giant" is a wonderfully told story about a boy who finds agiant metal robot who eats metal. The tale takes place in a New England town during the "Red Scare" of the late 1950's. A fine family film

Advantages: Great story
Disadvantages: Production a little basic

...Adults will recognise it from the story ‘The Iron Man’ written by Ted Hughes which can still be found in school libraries today. While the setting remains in the late fifties, the simple modern-day dialogue makes it eminently accessible to children of all ages. There is some violence, but a lot of it is implied rather than graphic. It is a film that stands up to comparison to the best Disney has to offer. The soundtrack is less impressive perhaps ...

The DVD transfer is particularly good and both Region 1 and Region 2 versions have Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and a Widescreen presentation. Both discs have a few extras including the music video and a ‘Making of’ feature. The only difference between the two is the addition of a standard 4:3 TV presentation on the flip side of the Region 1 disc. If ...

Awesome movie, life-changing

Advantages: Inspirational, moving, entertaining, demands repeated viewings
Disadvantages: Not enough extras on the DVD

Over the past two years I've got into films in a big way. Some I watch just for entertainment, others are because I think they might have some deeper effect on me. I bought The Iron Giant after seeing great reviews and thought it might fall into the former category. Actually, it excels in both. The story is fantastic, the message is clear, the animation is superb, the voice actors are talented, Michael Kamen's score contributes greatly to the mood of each scene and, most importantly (maybe), the humour is funny. I laughed, I cried, and I went away feeling extremely warm inside and satisfied with an amzing movie. By the way, I'm twenty years old. The DVD is identical to the US version, ...

UPDATED 100101-Giant movie with a sense of touch

Advantages: Great movie, DVD is pretty cheap!
Disadvantages: So far, none!

UPDATED 10/01/01 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I bought the Iron Giant on DVD since at that time it was really well promoted and pretty cheap. I was pretty suprised with what I actually got when I watched it. It was one of the best animation movie I've ever remembered watching! I was really suprised that the movie itself didn't make it big on the box-office! But, I guess Warner Bros realised that they made a huge mistake for not making enough promotion about ...
...with a brilliant DVD. The Iron Giant basically tells a story of a friendship between a boy, Hogarth Hughes (voiced brilliantly by the young Eli Marienthal) and a giant robot from outer space(Vin Diesel excells himself as the Iron Giant!) in the cold war era of 1957. If you want a great review about the movie, then I think you should head down here and read all about it: http://www.thebigpicturedvd.com/cgi-bin/master/viewer.cgi/The_Iron_Giant Since ...

...catapulted director Brad Bird into the premier league for animated features, those in the know remember "The Iron Giant" as the first indication that an exceptional talent had arrived. Bird's take on the story "The Iron Man" by Ted Hughes began with the brilliantly evocative question: What if a gun had a soul? The answer to this is a movie of unusual emotional and thematic depth. "The Iron Giant" tells the story of Hogarth, a young boy who befriends ...
...beyond his home town. In the era of Cold War, such an event can hardly go unnoticed by the authorities, and Hogarth soon finds himself the protector of a gentle spirit misunderstood by an entire planet. But is his new friend really as peace-loving as he seems? Fans of "The Incredibles" will be delighted with the very similar tone found here, including some very funny moments for adults. Though the animation is of the increasingly old-fashioned 2D ...

...very predictable. The story is about a little boy "Hogarth Hughes" who has a habbit of bringing home wild animals trying to turn them into pets. The beginning of the movie starts off in the diner where Hogarths mother(voice of Jennifer Anniston) works and he brings a squirrel in a box with him.
