Except, of course, nothing is that simple. Simply mix an unhealthy adolescent obsession, fear of the unknown and a liberal dosage of cabin fever, and suddenly the party atmosphere turns to terror. Whatever you expect from this film, you may well be surprised – nothing is quite what it seems…….

...Unfortunately, she isn't one of the popular students, so she devises a plan with friend Martyn, to get Mike to herself. Martyn arranges for Liz, Mike, and trendy students, Geoff and Frankie, to spend three days in an underground bomb shelter. The four enjoy their time below ground, until it comes to the day they are supposed to be returning to school and it transpires that Martyn is not coming back to let them out. A few days later, Liz manages to ... ...who plays Frankie, is probably the best known actress in this film, it is Thora Birch as Liz who gives the best performance. I found it immediately easy to identify with her; she is not one of the most popular students in school and finds it hard to get noticed. However, she is determined that, somehow, Mike will note her existence, and is, perhaps naively, sure that she will manage to win him over. At the same time, I was always aware that there ...

Advantages: Good scenes down the bunker - quite tense Disadvantages: Not scary, a bit of ropy acting
The Hole is a British horror / thriller from 2001, starring Thora Birch (American Beauty, Ghost World) and Keira Knightley before she got famous and started pouting.
It tells the tale of four friends who decide to bunk off a field trip from their posh boarding school, and instead spend the weekend buried underground in a secret bunker. Why they would want to do that is anybody's guess; it must have been one particularly boring field trip. These ... ...goes badly wrong…
Anyway, the film is told with flashbacks between this fateful weekend and the present, in which a police investigation is being carried out into the deaths of three of the four students. Only Liz survived the ordeal, and she is being interviewed by one of the psychologists/investigators (Embeth Davidtz - Miss Honey from Matilda). At first, the main suspect is another friend, Martyn (played by Daniel Brocklebank - now in Emmerdale), ...

Advantages: Great plot. Believable. Disadvantages: Graphically gruesome in places.
...been likened by some to the Blair Witch project. Do not be fooled by such reviews. This is the complete opposite – starting with the fact that this is actually VERY GOOD. The other main difference is that this is based on a believable tale (no belief in the supernatural required!). There is a very good plot with more twists and turns than the current Levi’s advert. And what’s more for the first time in a long time I could not predict ... ...providing some interesting insights into the human mind (ok, so a very messed up human mind but still human). It is pretty gruesome and graphically so, so it’s not one for the faint hearted. However I think it is wrong to dub it as a horror movie as it does not fit into many of the stereotypes this conjures up. It is far more horrific than actual horror.
So what is it about? Well I can not tell you much about the plot without giving things ...

...Crazy.
Anyway, back to the opinion.
In brief, The Hole is about these four (somewhat stupid) English (but one American) teens who set up camp in this large underground hide-out. Martin, the mastermind who locked them in the bunker and made sure their parents and the school didn't find out about it and left them there. On the day he's supposed to let them out, he doesn't and they're locked in. They find things fun to start with - all that alcohol ... ...the water and electricity go off... Scary!
The best thing (or at least my favourite thing) about this film is that you don't find out the whole (somewhat disturbing) truth until the very end and the whole thing is VERY chilling!
The cast isn't huge but each and every cast member performs very well. Thora Birch who plays Liz is the most interesting character. It's her scheme (along with best friend Martin) that gets the others in The Hole. She has ...

...good psychological Drama, it keeps the mind on edge and leaves you with a lot more to think about. Guy Burt’s Novel ‘After the Hole’ has been adapted into the latest of these entitled ‘The Hole’. The film takes an alternative setting to many of the American high school movies by instead using the backdrop of a British public school. The films sombre edge sums up its gritty reality and it’s definitely not a film ... ...The film starts with the appearance of Liz, played by Thora Birch (Hocus Pocus 1993), after being discovered missing with three companions for a fortnight. Having been locked into a old World War II bunker with them, Police Psychologist Phillipa, acted by Embeth Davidtz (Bridget Jones’s Diary 2001), tries in vain to extract the story from Liz behind their disappearance. Then follows two stories of the four student’s fourteen days underground.

Advantages: Gripping, Interesting story, Surprising final twist to the plot Disadvantages: It won’t appeal to everybody, especially those with delicate stomachs
Although not the most inspiring title for a film, The Hole is far from dull. Released in cinemas on April 20th, this movie provides some welcomed relief from the hype surrounding the box office hit, Bridget Jones’s Diary. Based on the novel by Guy Burt, (‘After The Hole’), this film centres on four public school teenagers who take refuge from a field trip by hiding in an wartime bunker. Convinced that they have successfully escaped a dismal stay ... ...down into the hole, armed with all the ingredients for the perfect party. The situation is further intensified by the fact that Liz is crazy about Mike, whilst Frankie and Geoff cannot wait to have some time to themselves. Nick Hamm’s film cleverly merges fantasy with reality, with the result that it is difficult for the viewer to separate the truth from fiction. The representations of the characters can often be misleading, and it is the subtlety ...

One of the most thrilling Brit flicks of recent years this film is a disturbing and intense psychological thriller. The film is about the dark side of human nature manifested in the form of sociopath Liz (Thora Birch) who's desire to gain the affections of school heart throb, Mike (Desmond Harrington) are seriously beyond the average school girl crush. ...movie - but not quite. The film is based on the book After the Hole by Guy Burt and is set (unusually these days) in England. The story follows Thora Birch (from American Beauty) who is the only survivor of some horrific accident/ordeal. Most of the story is told in flashback - but don't let that put you off. Who did lock them in? Who killed who?? Who is telling the truth??? Well ... ok, so I'm not gonna give the story away. Actually ...

The Hole was one of those films that I saw the previews to in the cinema sometime last year and decided I just had to watch the movie after desperately searching for something that may resemble in any way the Blair Witch Project (I loved that film!). It looked to me as if I might just have found a movie that did that in its own little way. Was I right? Well no, not really, however, it did the same types of things to your mind as Blair Witch Project ... ...what actually happened and the views on what happened could differ from person to person.
Anyway, enough of my ramblings and onto the film!
It all starts with a girl walking up a lane to her school, scared, bleeding and dirty she goes into her empty school hall, picks up the phone and dials the emergency services. She then just screams down the phone and what a spine chilling scream it is too, especially with the surround sound in the cinema, and ...

I first heard about The Hole last September after seeing a trailer for it, like all good trailers it didn’t give much of the main story away, indeed it posed many questions about what it was actually about. Equally as mysterious was the teaser website that went up.
