Advantages: wonderful story, brilliant acting Disadvantages: I couldn't stop crying for an hour
...and I'm glad I watched.
The film is based on a Stephen King novel and is about a year in the life of a death row prison guard. It starts off and finishes with him as an old man in the present day telling a story to a friend about the strangest year of his life (1938 I think).
But, the remainder of the film is set in 1938 so don't worry about lots of flashbacks.
The casting is surprisingly excellent and Michael Clarke Duncan who plays John Coffey, ... ...two special effects but mostly the movie is about how Coffey affects the lives of the guards (Hanks' character in particular) and of some of the inmates.
There are also some fairly graphic descriptions (and demonstrations) of the use of the electric chair.
BE PREPARED, I have never cried so much in my life, seriously my boyfriend was so worried when he saw his girl wrapped up into herself on the sofa wailing away. ...

Advantages: Acting, Plot, Storyline, Characters Disadvantages: Film Too Long?
As in the "Shawshank Redemption," Frank Darabont creates another brilliant transformation of a Stephen King novel onto the big screen with an award nominating success. Although "The Green Mile" is three hours long, it is a film with complete character development. John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), after the discovery of two murdered sisters, utters one of the taglines from this film when the posse confronts him. Coffey declares that "I tried to ... ...makes the same remark to Paul Edgecombe (Tom Hanks), the supervisor "Boss" of death row, thus giving him a "touch" of the truth. This tagline was a double-edged sword which Darabont honed to perfection. Not only was this comment mistaken as a confession, but also judged by the system to warrant the death penalty. Innocence was realized by Paul through John's gift: A touch of life. Paul was faced with a moral dilemma of knowing the truth, but having ...

Advantages: Makes you sit back and think. Disadvantages: Invest in some hankies.
...will have you reaching for the hankies. Tom Hanks excells himself yet again with this tale that will have you on your hands and knees begging for the right outcome.
Paul Edgecombe (Tom Hanks) plays a veteran prison guard on death row. His faith and sanity is about to have a turnround as he watches observes and intermingles with the latest guest on death row.
John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) is the latest "dead man walking" , hes eight feet tall, ... ...little girls...and hes afraid of the dark. Other guards include the sad and sadistic Percy who only holds his post because of relatives, enjoys taunting and teasing...hed better watch out because the saying is "what goes around....".
Brutus is on the other hand a follower of Edgecomb, a tall quiet guy who simply has a job to do, the smoothly it goes the better for everybody concerned.
The film does contain some nasty electric chair scenes and has ...

Advantages: Great acting from John (don't know his real name) and Tom Hanks Disadvantages: Death row and all.
The Green Mile is one of those films that you watch and you know you'll never forget.
Starring Tom Hanks as a 1930's prison guard in Louisiana during the Depression. He's not a mean guy, and tries to make things comfortable for his prisoners in their last few months on this earth before they are sent to their deaths in the electric chair.. Unfortunately, not all of the other guards are as nice.
One day, a new inmate arrives, charged with the murder ... ...ordinary criminal. He didn't commit the crime, and in fact he is a life giver, not taker. He has a magical power to take illness and death out of bodies and release them into the air. We see the somewhat tragic story lead on from this. Will John Coffey be released or executed? This is one of the most moving films I have seen, adapted from the novel by Stephen King, which I will read soon. The story brought tears to my eyes, and I'm sure most people ...

...well Tom Hanks has made the progression from comedy actor to serios actor, and films such as Saving Private Ryan and The Green Mile prove this to an astonishing degree.
The Green Mile is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. It is set on death row. The main plot revolves around a man who may be innocent for his crimes, and the obvious doubts this cause about his execution. Except, this summary is completely out of context. You really ... ...have doubts, although the fact that this is a Stephen King dramatisation may give pointers as to the kind of reasons for these doubts.
However, the film does not simply revolve around the guilty man. It contains humourous moments. For example, I won't be ruining the plot to any great degree by telling you that Hanks' character has a urinary infection. When it is cured, the look on his face as he goes to the toilet is fantastic - it truly captures ...

...surely a film just for the wife...everyone had said so !
For a film that moves slowly I was transfixed from the outset. Tom Hanks has, in my opinion, never been better - infact the whole cast acted exceptionally.
I defy anyone not to have tears in their eyes and a lump in their throat when they watch the tale of the man condemned to die who yet still positively affects the lives of those around him.
The moment when he brings the mouse back to ...

i watch this film in the summer last year. If i had to drescribe it in just two words, it would be ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I had never heard of the film - or the book for that matter - before, and only then i wondered why.
The storyline is remarkable.. if a little magical. Tom Hanks played one of the main roles, and if i had to say to myself, he played the role fantastically ... as in most of his films, but in this one it seemed different, maybe because ... ...of the audience with something more than most films.
Without giving away too much, the story is about a rather large man that has had many problems in his life that had many mystical, mysterious and magical powers that know one else knew about. One normal summers day, two little girls went missing from their home, only to be discovered in this mans arms, his body covered with their blood. I assumed the obvious and so did the police. Finally, he ...

Recently a friend gave me the green mile to watch on video, this was probably not a film I would have chosen to watch, so I put it aside to watch when I had time.
Well that time came and I started the video. Set back before the second world war it is a story, and a true story at that, of capital punishment. The death sentance was given via an electric chair, and the film actually showed the death of the convicts. Graphic it was, and compelling viewing.
... ...in the USA in those times, and what life was like for prisoners awaiting the death sentence.
Wether you support the death sentence or not, the conditions illustrated were extremely poor.
The video was nearly three hours long, so give yourself plenty of time to watch it, and when you start watching it you WILL watch to its conclusion, you cannot stop.
Tom Hanks and co-actors are particularly good in this film, portraying the way people were.
If ...

Advantages: A truly great, moving film Disadvantages: 1hr, 45 mins - go out and make popcorn for 5 minutes or so!
...prior to going to see The Green Mile I had not got much sleep. This was because I had been to the official web site and unfortunately caught a glimpse of a pretty horrific scene. I'd read some pretty horrific reports of that scene, and so I sat down with some trepidation.
Thankfully the film itself surpassed all expectations. As expected the first hour was a little bit slow, and unfortunately for someone as squeamish as me the action does not really ... ...the story is a compelling and touching one, yet not without humour. There are also unpleasant parts, but upon reflection these only deem to show the nature of the characters involved. They are necessary, although I didn’t watch the second execution myself. Some things can be left to the imagination.
As for the actors? Well, as so many people said it was too controversial a part for Michael Clarke Duncan to win the Oscar for best supporting actor. ...

...guard on death row in the 1930's. His outlook on life has been eroded by watching men live and die. One day something comes into his life. Something really big. John Coffey (like the drink but not spelled the same) is eight feet tall and has hands as big as most people's heads. He's stands accused of the murder of two children but he's afraid to sleep in his cell with the lights off. Over the course of the film Edgecomb and the other prison guards ... ...send them to hell.
The Green Mile is a wonderful adaptation from Stephen King's set of books, and is truly moving. It is quite long (about 3 hours), but it is worth watching without a shadow of a doubt.
Tom Hanks puts in a wonderful performance as does Michael Clarke Duncan.

This is one of the few movies I have went to see in the cinema and one of the few I haven't regretted paying the money to watch. This is one of these movies that doesn't scre the pants off you more like hrrifies the pants off. There are now jumps and bumps here in fact the pace of the movie never goes above slow meandering but such is the stroyline and the suspense it holds it captivates the viewer all the same.
The film is above some unsavoury ... ...told through the eyes of Tom Hanks who plays a warder on the green mile as its called because of the colour of the floor. Strange and wonderful things begin to happen when a character called John Coffee a gentle giant of a man arrives on the mile after been convicted of killing two young girls. I can't tell you much but suffice to say John Coffee is no ordinary person and has a special talent. We also have a star in the form of a mouse who plays ...

After reading the 1996 novel of the same name by Stephen King and from hearing many good things about this film from my friends, i decided to watch it wondering if they could do something that not many films do all that well in.....whether the film could be just as good as the book. I have to say after watching this movie, i would regard it as one of best i have ever seen and i was not disappointed. Directed by Frank Darabont (director of The Shawshank ... ...Death Row called John Coffey. I read the book first, which came out in six parts, one every month. I thought at the time that it would make a good film. Low and behold it made an excellent film. This time, they have definitely done Stephen King proud. This is a must see. I am a very big fan of Stephen King and buy all his books and watch any films made from those books, this is the best. It is virtually an exact replica of the book and that is often not the case, the book is ... ..."huge" negro "John Coffey" ("like the drink but only not spelt the same") as the big guy would say, who is arrested and put on death row for the murder and rape of two little girls. It is about his special power and what he does with that power. I can't say too much otherwise it would spoil it for anyone who wishes to see it. Tom Hanks plays an excellent part, what would you expect from a death row prison officer? Certainly not the kind, compassionate ...

...film after reading and loving the book. I finally got to see it on Monday and have watched it everyday on Sky.
The film is so much better than the book, this film is about death row and an innocent man who was sentenced to death for a crime that he didn't do.
This film stars Tom Hanks (Forest Gump and You've got mail)as Paul Edgecomb who is a prison guard in the 1930's, Michael Clarke Duncan (John Coffey) he was the gentle giant with the gift of ... ...as Mr Jingles the mouse who would scrounge food from the inmates and guards.
The film is a weepy also, I didn't think it would be to bad but after watching it the first time I made sure I had some hankys the second and third time round. Edgecombe and 3 other guards new that Coffey was innocent when they electrecuted Coffey, you can see the tears in their eyes when the switch it switched on. Coffey gave Edgecombe a piece of himself so that he could ...

After being found with two young girls who were raped and murdered, he is immediately judged as the culprit, but without giving too much away, the guards soon see his powers are not just from his size and weight.
This is a delightfully touching film which inspires ... ...smile from the humour and awe of it all. Mr. Jingles the mouse is a cracker too...
It really twists your mind into vast trains of thought and gives a what would be believed to be a realisitic insight into operation of prisons on death row, and how they effect the lives of those involved in them.
Because of this the film has an adult content to it and is appropriately rated an 18 for this purpose, and rightly so. It is far different from any expectations ...
