...be reasonably good. THE PLOT. Stephen King wrote “The Green Mile” which was a story that was spread out over 6 books. This movie was based on that story. It is about a large, gentle, simple-minded black man who is convicted murdering 2 little white girls during the Depression. He is sent to death row, which everyone calls “The Green Mile” since the hall that leads to old sparky is green. His name is John Coffey, ‘like ... ...healing which he demonstrates on the head prison guard who has a bladder infection. And it is a mighty rude awakening. It gets very interesting as John Coffey heals other people and a pet of a fellow inmate—a field mouse named Mister Jingles. It’s set in the depression which lends a certain flavor to the film; one of sadness, isolation, and a certain-I don’t know-innocence (?). A couple of inmates were executed before Coffey was. ...

...film had me gripped from the start. It truely is an emotive film. The closest comparison I can make with it for it's sheer power and emotion is, 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'. Acting throughout the film is brilliant with some very polished performances.
Without spilling the beans about the story and spoiling your enjoyment, the film is set on Death Row in a prison in the USA. The Green Mile is the name given to Death Row. The main character, ...

Advantages: It's brilliant Disadvantages: Three hours long
Stephen King, being one of the world's most published authors has had many of his novels turned into movies and very few have ever managed to capture the essence of his work. King's books while being horror have always focussed on the characters that he creates, and much of this is lost in the translation. Anyone that has seen ( and read ) It will know exactly what I mean.

...Stephen King’s work but The Green Mile has to be by far the best film adaptation of any of his work. Three hours long with only a handful of characters seems my idea of a dull film, but not this, the time flew by and before I knew it John Coffey was changing the lives of the people he met. Excellent characterisation allows the story to unfold and almost tell itself without any need to force the plot. In a somewhat unsavoury story Hanks shines as Paul Edgecomb officer in charge of The Green Mile, or death row, in a 1930’s prison, and then one day along comes an new inmate, John Coffey convicted of murdering 2 young girls – and if the truth were told lucky to make it to trial or prison in the 1930’s deep south. From almost the moment they met Paul knows Coffey will change his ...

The Green Mile
When my ex decided that she wanted to stay in one night and watch The Green Mile, I was somewhat cynical to say the least. After all Tom Hanks is hardly regarded as an action hero amongst Hollywood circles.
To say that I was surprised was an understatement, Hanks plays Paul Edgecomb who is looking back at his life as a prison guard on death row, during the 1930’s. Amongst his prison colleges he has a huge bloke called Brutus, ... ...bloke called Percy, who is the State Governors nephew and can do no wrong. He’s a twisted bloke who I can guarantee you will want to stick in ‘old sparky’, before the film is halfway through.
Edgecomb is going through some sort of mid life crisis, and is also suffering from a presumably rather painful problem with his old man (if you know what I mean!). All is normal on death row, until John Coffey (‘like the drink but not ...

Advantages: Great cast, great story written by an amazing writer Disadvantages: None!
From the very beginning The Green Mile grabs you by the throat and holds you there for the next three hours. Tom Hanks (Edgecomb) is the supervisor of E block better known as death row. This is the end of the road, and the longest hallway anywhere.
Starring Michael Clarke Duncan who plays John Coffey (Armageddon) this is quite possibly his best acting performance to date. A simple man accused of a heinous crime, he changes the lives of all who know ... ...about it. It’s based on the book written by Stephen King and by far one of his best movies. The truth of this movie hits like a punch to the gut. A grim reminder that death is permanent and sometimes things aren't as they seem.
The Green Mile gives a stark account of what it’s like to legally kill a man and the toll it has on those in charge of such deeds. Tom Hanks (Edgecomb) gives these prisoners a little slice of dignity even in death.
My recommendation: ...

I particularly liked the young prison guard, he was so obnoxious, you could really hate him. But it's difficult to pick out the best characters, they were all so good.

The green Mile is a very long and like many of Tom Hanks's films quite emosional. This really captures the death penaulty from a different side, you would really have to see the film to apprechiate it all though. Every Actor or Actress in this film is experienced and plays their part to the best of their ability and extremly well. I Saw this film out in Zimbabwe 2 months before it was released in the United Kingdom. Now it's just coming out here ...

The green mile is a story about a big gentle man who is wrongfully accused of the of two little children. John Coffey (Expertly played by Michael Clarke Duncan) is the man accused of of the two little children. He was found cuddling their limps bodies, and found guilty there and then. And for a start, it is hard to see how he can be not guilty . But the truth of the situation is found out, as the film continues.
Tom Hanks plays the prison warden ... ...Hanks brilliantly portrays the character, working on the row. Hanks soon begin to have doubts about Coffey’s guilt (that’s Coffey not coffee, as the gentle giant tells us in the film). A little mouse named as Mr Jingles has a decent role for such a small animal. Coffey, it turns out has healing powers, and cures Hanks of his infection. Before ‘escaping’ from prison one evening (with the wardens) to heal a critically ill woman.

...in that grabs you by the throat. This film is so emotional, the tears were literally streaming down mine and my girlfriends cheeks.
At the beginning of the film, Tom Hanks is in a pensioners home and is watching a film. He starts crying whilst watching this film and walks away. His friend (an elderly woman) follows him out to ask him what is wrong. Then he starts to tell her the story of an amazing man named John Coffee.
John Coffee was one of ... ...saw walk the green mile. But John Coffee was different to the others who had been there because he could see bad things which had happened and sometimes change them. John Coffee was up for murdering two little girls which he obviously didn't do. Close to the beginning of the film, Tom Hanks has a problem with going the toilet and John Coffee notices this. He grabs Tom Hanks by his 'bits' and sucks out the badness that is causing Tom Hanks his pain.

...Once Upon A Time in the West, to brilliant effect. I'm sick of looking at Tom Hanks' smiley head, with his massive cliff face forehead, with that mad-looking hair perched on top. The James Stewart of the Nineties is essentially the same character in every movie - so we've had Mr. Smith Goes to the Moon, Mr. Smith Gets AIDS, Mr. Smith is Sleepless in Seattle, and Mr. Smith Goes to War. Now, in Darabont's OTHER prison based epic, its Mr. Smith Cooks ... ...The story concerns John Coffey, a simpleton miracle-worker who is condemned to death after apparently murdering two little girls. Conflict comes in the form of sadistic Percy, a spoilt Daddy's boy who fantasizes about frying inmates, and Wild ...

Advantages: Sticks to King's novel extremely well, outstanding acting, counteracts heavy and emotional scenes with some of great beauty. Disadvantages: Can be exhausting to watch. Not for children.
The Green Mile (written by Stephen King) is an inspired film. It folows the story of a death row inmate, John Coffey, who has been committed on a false charge. We see the realisation of Coffey's unique powers by the head warden, played by Tom Hanks. This discovery takes the viewer on a rollercoaster ride of emotion, shock and pity. What is so unique about this film is that it sticks to King's original text so rigidly. Unlike some films, for example ... ...alien plot being added into the script. This allows the film to retain its original excellence.
The actors' performances are outstanding. John Coffey is played to extreme accuracy and we become resolved to tears by the moving performance. Tom Hanks, likewise, plays his role extremely well and the character comes alive from the script.
Whilst the film is shocking in places, it is not too much to become uncomfortable or upsetting for the viewer. ...

I did not get the chance to watch this Tom Hanks film at the cinema, rather on video at home - of which l am glad. This is a Stephen King adaption by producer and director Frank Darabont, and after his first amazing production The Shawkshank Redemption - which l rate as one of my all time favourite films - The Green Mile had a lot to live up to. He met this task easily.
About prisoners on death row, with Hanks playing the head warden in charge, ... ...It shows the prisoners as people with feelings not concentrating too much on their crimes. It is an emotional roller-coaster. Humour, anger, shock, disgust and saddness are all shown to the viewer.
There were times during the electrocution scenes that l could not watch - it was too disturbing for me.

I have just watched The Green Mile starring Tom Hanks, what a film - held me rivetted the whole time. I see that there has been 93 reviews over the years but I loved the film so much I must put my thoughts on paper, so to speak.
Naturally, based on a Stephen King novel the story line was great and the acting of Tom Hanks as a guard on death row and Michael Clarke Duncan, one of the prisoners, was brilliant, in fact all the acting was extremely good.
