For the follow-up to his dark crime thriller SEVEN, director David Fincher decided to remain in a film noir vein. The result is THE GAME, a fast-paced cinematic roller-coaster ride...
more...that stars Michael Douglas as Nicholas Van Orton, a joyless San Francisco investment banker who receives an unusual birthday present from his estranged younger brother, Conrad (Sean Penn). The gift enrolls Nicholas in CRS (Consumer Recreation Services), a company that designs elaborate real-life games for each specific participant. As the game begins, the reluctant Nicholas becomes the victim of a series of pranks that quickly turn malicious and dangerous. Stripped of his finances and convinced that he can trust no one, Nicholas realizes that this game may be an attempt to steal his fortune and leave him for dead. In a desperate bid to regain his life, Nicholas infiltrates CRS in order to uncover the secrets of the mysterious organization.
Douglas is perfect playing the uptight businessman Nicholas, cleverly riffing on his Oscar-winning performance as the cold-blooded Gordon Gekko in WALL STREET. Fincher's Kafkaesque carnival show is an exercise in taut filmmaking that mischievously pulls a seemingly endless supply of rugs out from under both Nicholas and, even more impressive, the viewer.

Advantages: More twists than a drunk rattlesnake.
Disadvantages: Perhaps a little tough to believe.

...arrogant executive banker, it under the shadow of this name that 'The Game' takes shape. On the face of it, this film looked very promising: it had everything I look for in a film, so I started watching in keen anticipation. Yet it isn't an easy film to watch: it doesn't let you build any sort of true idea of the plot without it breaking it down in the next five minutes. As such it is somewhat of a challenge. ...to review a movie like The Game without giving away too much of its plot and ideas that you you ruin it for any reader who has never seen it before. This is the third time of writing this for me, having tried to include as many elements as possible to stimulate your interest in the movie without spoiling it as a viewing experience. I failed each time, eventually I have given up, but I do still want to recommend this to you all..so here goes, sparse ... Read review

Advantages: Great plot, great acting, great direction... Great
Disadvantages: You can't really watch it more than twice (trust me)

...film by stretch marks on the bladder in quite awhile. That is to say, “The Game” had me so riveted that my digested Pepsi, while causing me great pain due to retention, could not prod me out of my seat. John D. Brancato and Michael Ferris (the writing team that brought us “The Net” and about five other films) have teamed up with the mythical David Fincher (director of “Seven”, “Aliens 3” and "Fight ... Review of The Game DVD by Ork1927

Advantages: Intriguing Thriller, the ending
Disadvantages: The Ending?

The Game is David Fincher's third film sandwiched between Seven and Fight Club. Michael Douglas is high powered businessman, Nicholas Van Orton with little time for anyone bar his stocks and shares. Haunted by the suicide of him father, he sits alone on his 48th birthday before meeting with his brother Conrad (Sean Penn) who gives him a gift to play "The Game", a consumer recreation event for executives. Van Orton visits the company running the ... Read review

What to buy a millionaire for his birthday
Review of The Game DVD by krabople

Advantages: Original, inventive and well scripted.
Disadvantages: Confusing?

The Game is one of the most unpredictable, original films I have ever seen. It somehow leaves you completely unsure of what to think, yet makes perfect sense at the end and is relatively easy to understand. To say there is a big twist at the end would be an understatement - the whole film is just a series of twists, some bigger than others, but practically all of them unforseeable. Michael Douglas is Nicholas Van Orton, a successful upper-class ... Read review

The Game Starring Michael Douglas
Review of The Game DVD by Elkfazer

Advantages: Complexity Of Plot.
Disadvantages: See Above.

The game is a fast paced action thriller which sees Nicholas Van Orten (Michael Douglas)receive a birthday present beyond his wildest dreams,or should that be nightmares? Van Orten is a hard-nosed high flying corporate business man, whose only pleasure seems to come from his nack of rubbing people up the wrong way whilst doing his business deals. Whether or not this attitude stems from the fact that his own father commited suicide while he was still ... Read review

Review of The Game DVD by wemstalker

Advantages: An all round good show
Disadvantages: .

The Game, comes to us from Director David Fincher he of Se7en and Fight Club fame. It sees Michael Douglas in the staring role as millionaire Banker Nicholas Van Orton, who is an absolute loner and an altogether horrible person. It is Van Orton’s 48th Birthday (The age at which his father committed suicide.) His Brother Conrad (Sean Penn) comes to him and gives him a card, which is an entry into some kind of unusual entertainment, provided ... Read review

Michael Douglas in The Game
Review of The Game DVD by nickjj78

Advantages: Brilliant, fast paced film
Disadvantages: Can only watch it once!

The Game Background The Game comes from the director of the fantastic film Seven which may give a bit of a flavour of the type of magical movie journey that you are in for. What did I think of it? This was open of those movies that is fantastic when you watch it for the first time but also quite sad as you know that you can never watch it in quite the same way again once you know the plot (I am generally one of those people who can watch ... ...strongest performance in years as the highly successful but bored businessman who apparently has everything but plays 'The Game' and has his life turned upside down. Sean Penn is as excellent as ever as his brother in a tense and stylish big budget thriller that'll have you guessing all the way. Twisting and turning, this had me on the edge of my seat throughout and while I know many people found the ending disappointing, you could never say that ... Read review
