~ ~ The mad cabbie and daughter went to watch the latest in a long line of Hollywood ‘Armageddon’ movies last night, the new blockbuster “The Day After Tomorrow” (henceforth DAT) from Director Roland Emmerich, who also gave us such classics as “Independence Day” and “Godzilla”. For his latest offering Emmerich has had New York and various other American cities rapidly rebuilt after their practically total destruction in his other movies, in order ... ...but by dramatic changes in the weather, which sees the whole of the Northern hemisphere plunged into a new Ice Age in the space of a couple of weeks.
~ ~ If you’re wondering about a plot, then I just gave it to you in my last sentence. Emmerich has taken the theme of global warming, which we are all warned about on almost a daily basis in the media, and accelerated the process beyond either recognition or credibility, to produce a doomsday scenario ...

Fearing that this may suggest an abrupt and dangerous change in the world’s climate, Hall sets about trying to analyse and model the effect of the shift in frozen water. Australia suffers the worst typhoon in recorded history and in Japan, freak hailstones the size of rocks start to fall from the sky. But despite the fevered media interest, the world takes little notice of the warnings of what is about to happen. As dark clouds start too loom over Northern America, ...

...I had high hopes that the new flick would be different; particularly stemming from quotes such as the film would be “eye opening” to say the least. Indeed, the film was “eye opening”, broadening my mind on issues featured, such as the careless burning of fossil fuels and its effect on global warming and the impending melting of the polar ice caps ; unfortunately, concurrently, the film was head-slappingly stupid and terribly clichéd. What had promised ... ...Quaid) claims to have made the discovery that the world is in for a large-scale climate shift; the consumption of fossil fuels will eventually result in the paradoxical eventuality of a new ice age, due to an imbalance of fresh water and salt water and its negative effect on the north Atlantic current. Or some movie-speak jargon which strives to sound conceivable. However, Hall’s estimations of an on-coming ice age are a lot more likely that he thought, ...

...this one and after seeing the trailer it was on my top 10 list of films to see. Though I actually was going to see Harry Potter on that day but it was sold out. The film opened in the US with a very respectable $70 Million Dollars into the number 2 spot of the Box Office as Shrek 2 still was hoilding the no 1 slot on it's second week and totaling up $238 Million. 'Day after Tomorrow' was made on a $125 Milion budget so it will easily get it's money ... ...something else may come from the director 'Roland Emerich' further down the line.
The film is made and written by, as I stated above by Roland Emerich who made films such as 'Godzilla', 'Independence Day, 'The Patriot' and 'Stargate'. He also recently produced 'Eight Legged Freaks'. So all in all he has a very good filmography but does this film live up to the reputation of his past projects?

...one of my jaunts to the cinema and it immediately appealed to me. Disaster movies are a tricky genre, even the most noted such as 'The Poseidon Adventure' and 'The Towering Inferno' haven't exactly gone down as classics. Roland Emmerich is a director who can be relied upon to create great spectacles. He’s good at blowing things up. He’s famous for his rabidly pro-American stance, odd for a man who hails from a small town in Germany. Here he has created another blockbuster with plenty of bang per buck. ...

The “Other” film blockbuster released last holiday weekend has to be “The Day After Tomorrow”. The Day After Tomorrow is not, by anyone’s standards, typical Hollywood fare. I mean sure, they churned out some weather horror stories (most notably The Perfect Storm), but to turn global warming into a top 10 film worldwide and to make it an action flick on top of that, is no easy feat. In the capacity of the film, which deals with the dawn of a new Ice Age triggered by global warming, his job is to try and figure out a plan of action and determine what the storm will do next, since nobody saw this coming so soon, including himself. In the context of the film’s subplot, he is father to a teenage son, Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal), who has just left for a school trip to New York when these mega storm cells erupt. Jake ...

...bloody rain cloud strike at the most inappropriate of moments, and if that is such a popular scenario, then THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW could have been a very relatable film. The next time you relax at home and think to yourself,'I know I think I'll burn some fossil fuel', think again, as who knows what could happen tomorrow.
The concept of our misuse of planet earth has been highlighted on numerous occasions and the 'greenhouse effect' that delivers us hotter summers and harsher winters stands as a testament to our destruction of the ozone layer and all that that will bring with it.
The idea here follows this train ... ...and the sea levels rising. This triggers tidal-waves, tornadoes and freak storms aplenty, but also disrupts the earths air currents and plunges most of the northern hemisphere into the early stages of the new ice age .. as it would I suppose.
This is where this movie differs from most of it's genre, in that we have to accept that this event IS going to happen and that whatever the heroes of the film contrive to do, the world will change forever ...
