PREPARE FOR ADVENTURE - COUNT ON REVENGE

Advantages: Good swashbuckling fun, classic story
Disadvantages: Not quite enough action

...already, it does rather beg the question, “What’s the point of doing yet another version?” It was nearly twenty years since the last film version of Alexandre Dumas’s was released in cinemas, so with an entirely new generation of filmgoers to be enthralled, perhaps the time was right to re-make this classic story. The Count of Monte Cristo is the story of two young men. Edmond Dantes and Fernand Mondego both work for a shipping ...
...and common sense. Mondego, on the other hand, is the son of a wealthy count and is well educated in all matters. Nonetheless, despite the pair’s wildly varying family backgrounds, it is Edmond who is the most successful in life and love. Whilst aboard their ship, the two men decide to make a trip to the small island off the Italian coast that is the refuge of Napoleon Bonaparte. Whilst resting on the island, Edmond is one night approached by ...

...of him as cool. Redressing the balance and creating good medieval movies has met with mixed results over the years. Who can forget the inexplicably dire First Knight with Richard Gere? Everyone, hopefully. Robin Hood (the one with Kevin Costner) was pretty good, and A Knight’s Tale seems to have won over modern audiences with its bizarre fusion of jousting and modern rock. Now, into the red corner steps a new contender, one who takes the genre seriously ...
...their ailing captain (he has the wonderfully nondescript illness known as “brain fever”), they stumble across the secret prison of Napoleon Bonaparte, and after a swift battle with the prison guards, Napoleon protests their innocence – but also hands Edmond a seemingly innocent letter to take back to the mainland. Fernand witnesses this act, and growing jealous after being repeatedly bettered in life and love by the illiterate Edmond, he betrays ...

Stand up and be Counted

Advantages: Great solid old-fashioned story telling
Disadvantages: performaces on the hammy side, not enough fighting

...d’ya fancy going to see the remake of “The Count of Monte Cristo”?”, she replied. “ A remake of “The Count of Monte Cristo” how redundant is that? A story which, according to IMDB.com, has been made into a cinematic movie 13 times, 3 TV movies and 4 series. I’d say the last thing the world needs is yet another version. What on earth makes you think I’d ever go and see this movie?” A winning ...

Based on the book by Alexander Dumas, this is the one that isn’t about the imprisoned King of France (that’s “The Man in the Iron Mask, I get them mixed up everytime). Set during the earlier part of 19th Century France, it is the ...

Chilly revenge

Advantages: good, old-fashioned swash-buckling adventure yarn
Disadvantages: drippy heroine, and a first half that might drag on repeated viewings

...a time when ‘adventure’ in the cinema tends to either be your big special effects-laden fantasy epic (Lord of the Rings) or your big special effects-laden action adventure (The Mummy, for instance), The Count of Monte Cristo sees cinema harking back to an era where ‘adventure’ was more adventurous all by itself and not because some horrible computer generated baddie was chasing the hero(es). No, this is all about buckling ...
...the heaving bosom of the heroine in a conveniently low cut dress. •¤• THE PLOT •¤• Based as it is on a classic piece of literature – the book of the same name by Alexandre (The Three Musketeers) Dumas – the plot of The Count of Monte Cristo is too well known for the trailers to the film to have bothered with any element of suspense. No, even before you’ve stepped near a cinema, you’ll already know ...

When Good Neighbours Dont Become Good Friends

Advantages: Intriguing
Disadvantages: Bits cut from the book and long

...unable to place one of the characters? The second lead in this film, Guy Pearce, used to be in BBC1s Neighbours. Now nothing will spoil your enjoyment. The Count of Monte Christo is a very famous and well loved story. This screen adaptation doesn't manage to encompass the whole of the story, but it copes pretty well; the swash is buckled, the hero cast into a pit of oblivion, the heroine wronged and finally a great revenege is wrought. The natural ...

The young sailor (who will eventually be the Count) is first mate and insists on taking the Captain ashore onto Elba (where Napolean is being held) in search of aid. The problem being that at this time, the British shot anyone who landed there for any reason. They land, and after an initial skirmish, ...

Rollicking Good Romp

Advantages: Harris, the scenery, the acting
Disadvantages: not a lot - Pearce, lack of continuity in parts

...overblown, badly cast, inaccurate. The adjectives continue in this vein. Kevin Reynolds must be used to this treatment by the critics though – Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Waterworld, both perfectly above-average films based on enjoyment factor at least, being prime examples. This film reminds one strongly of Reynolds’ style – dodgy accents notwithstanding it also has the through-and-through evil guy, the damsel in distress, ...
...as the stereotypical bad guy he is so good at playing. All in the name of fun though, as a thread of (sometimes dark) humour runs throughout, particularly when Richard Harris’ wonderful priest, a fellow inmate, is onscreen, as he teaches Edmond the way of the world. Who cares if the story is preposterous, or if certain details have not been thought through properly (I had to admit Edmond was in very good nick for someone in prison for 13 years). ...

Wreak My Rewengay

Advantages: Exciting, sword fighting, not too much bodice ripping
Disadvantages: None

...revenge. I was hoping that the balance would lie towards the swashbuckling and away from the bodice-ripping, as I like my films, and I was not to be disappointed. PLOT Edmond Dantes (James Caviezel) and Fernand de Mondego (Guy Pearce – yes that’s right, the one from ‘Neighbours’ but this time not sporting an australian accent) are friends and colleagues on a ship. They risk their lives (at Dantes’ insistence) in an attempt to save their dying captain ...
...his in secret. Mondego sees the exchange and his cogs start whirring as to how he could bring his friend, of whom he has always been jealous, down a peg or two. Dantes is betrayed by Mondego and is unjustly imprisoned on the desolate and brutally run Castle d’If. Here Dantes remains a prisoner for over a decade and eventually manages to escape due to his fortuitous acquaintance with one of the other prisoners, an old man who he refers to as ‘the ...

The Count of Monte Cristo-A Wet Blanket of a Film

Advantages: A few well-played parts, visually impressive.
Disadvantages: Script and plot are weak, characters too stereotypical.

I saw The Count of Monte Cristo on the first day it came out here in the UK, but I wasn't overly impressed. Here's why... =========================================== The Man in the Iron Mask, Anybody? =========================================== Dashing young men dash across the screen quite dashingly in this distinctly average tale of trust, bravery and - well - dashing, really. Admittedly there are some impressive scenes and the landscape is breathtaking, ...
...=============================================== The Plot of The Count of Monte Cristo =============================================== We're in France after the fall of Napoleon. The dashing (I warned you!) Edmond Dantes (played by Jim Caviezel) is a clerk's son who has enjoyed some success in life. His fiancee, Mercedes (Dagmara Dominczyk), is stunningly beautiful and he has a great friend in the also dashing Fernand Mondego (Guy Pearce). But the ...

Don't count on this version...

Advantages: Good action, looks great, fantastic story
Disadvantages: Average script and acting, misses lots out from the book

...since I have heard of the book but never read it, and I have recently watched and enjoyed Le Bossu (The Hunchback), so I'm into period French revenge swashbucklers at the moment. The first thing I have to say about this film is that if you watched the fourth series of 24, you will recognise the man who plays Villefort, and it will annoy you all the way through trying to work out where you've seen him. Well it did me. His name is James Frain, and ...
...Anyway, now onto the film. Directed by Kevin Reynolds, it is the latest adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' classic novel, starring Jim Caviezel (Passion of the Christ) and Guy Pearce (Memento) in the two main roles. The story is one of pure revenge. A sailor from Marseilles named Edmond Dantès is asked by Napoleon Bonaparte to deliver a letter, but before he can do this he is captured and arrested on charges of treason. It turns out his best friend, ...

Don't rob me of my hate

Advantages: Excellent swash buckling entertainment
Disadvantages: Strays from the book too much for puritans

...are at least aware of the title and the existance of Alexandre Dumas classic novel of betrayal and revenge and I was very impressed by the way it translated on to the screen. The story focuses on Edmond Dantes (Jim Cavievel) who is a moral and idealic young sailor on a vessel with his best friend Fernand Mondego (Guy Pearce) who is the heir to the title 'Count of Morcerf'. The story open with these two men landing on Elba (then the prison of Napoleon) ...
...for him to a friend. The two young men leave and arrive in Marseille when we are introduced to Edmond's fiance Mercedes (Dagmara Dominczyk) who are also happens to be the apple of Fernand's eye. Edmond has to explain to his supperiors his actions on Elba although they rerspect his courage and he is made Captain of the ship, much to the annoyance of the first mate. With a promotion, a girl on his arm and his best friend at his side it's at this ...

Never trust Napoleon

Advantages: Classic Story well retold
Disadvantages: Could have more action.

...night, we set sail down the M5 bound for Bristol to give this film a try. Armed with the most expensive popcorn in South West England we settled down to watch The Count of Monte Cristo. The story tells of two lifelong friends, one from a rich and noble family, and the other from a working class background who whilst on a long sea voyage are forced to set for the nearest habited land in order to save their Captain's life. This places them on an island ...
...and back to love. The twist and turns of this film make it complelling viewing, along with a subtle underlying humour which sets this remake apart from the previous versions. The story as a whole has a predictable ending which when you consider the fact that it is a classic story, is not entirely surprising, however I think that this remake could have had a bit more action to please the modern audience. Is it worth watching? Yes, however I wouldn't ...

...thankfully this film does do the book justice and this too is one of my favourite films. it captures the main themes of betrayal and revenge well from the dumas classic but is not completely faithful to the book. this is excusable as anyone who has read the book will know that it is very long far to drawn out for a movie. the added scenes do keep with the story and it is very clever the way they have invented these scenes whilst remaining true to ...

The Count Of Monte Cristo

Advantages: The advantages to buying The Count Of Monte Cristo would be enjoying an amazing movie.
Disadvantages: The disadvantages would be a decrease of some pounds or dollars in your wallet.

I recently saw The Count Of Monte Cristo at my Grandmother's house for the first time. It was the most amazing movie I have ever seen. Jim Cavizel does an amazing job and he really fits the character. He also isn't hard on the eyes. This movie is entertaining, action packed and it has an incredible plot line. I don't want to give too much away but it's a movie that almost everyone can enjoy. This movie would make a great gift for holidays or birthdays ...

The Count of Monte Cristo

Advantages: Good family entertainment
Disadvantages: A bit long

...wanted to go out to the pictures. My son is 9 and my daughter 11 so we wanted something suitable for all of us. We settled on this film and immediately got involved in it as action was being carried out were 2 people, supposibly friends, were on Napoleons prison island and one was given a task by Napoleon to do. Any way as the film went on a big doublecross happened and one of the men ended up in prison in Cahteau d'f a horrible place to spend ...
