If you read the synopsis that accompanies the product listing for this DVD, you won't need me to tell you that the movie is about professional pool players in the USA. A breed we here in the UK know little about. Although this film is obviously an early vehicle for the blossoming acting skills of a talented young actor called Tom Cruise, the central storyline relies heavily on the viewer having seen his co-star Paul Newman's B&W classic "The Hustler". ...
...you who have never seen The Hustler, may I recommend it to you as as fine an example of tour de force acting as you will ever come across. In it Newman is the rookie pool player, and actor, who in both guises finds himself out of his league, but with so much raw talent that he almost beats everyone, including then superstar George C. The problem is the young kid has no control, he makes it very obvious when he is hustling and doesn;t know how to allow a few games to be lost before winning for the bigger stake, He just keeps winning as he hates losing. The young kid who is in this film played by a very young Tom Cruise is late teens early 20's sort of age and Fast Eddie (Paul Newman) decides to get him onside and teach him how to hustle like a pro.
