Martin Scorsese's THE COLOR OF MONEY picks up where Robert Rossen's 1961 film THE HUSTLER left off. Fast Eddie Felson (Paul Newman), now middle-aged, finds the image of his...
more...youthful self in a pool hustler named Vincent Lauria (Tom Cruise). Trying to relive his past days of glory through the cocky but inexperienced youngster, Fast Eddie takes on the role of Vincent's manager and mentor. But Fast Eddie didn't count on having to contend with Vincent's smart, sexy, and extremely ambitious girlfriend. The three characters become engaged in an emotionally complicated power struggle as they make their way to Atlantic City, where Vincent plans to compete in his first pool tournament.
Scorsese's, as well as Newman's, love for the character of Fast Eddie shines through in every frame of this sequel, something that didn't go unnoticed by the academy (earning Newman the Best Actor Oscar). Playing the young upstart, Cruise steps up to Newman's challenge, delivering an energetic performance that cemented his place at the top of the young Hollywood elite. Robbie Robertson's bluesy score reflects the smoky interiors of the various pool halls that Fast Eddie and Vincent haunt, adding another layer of moodiness to the already stylish proceedings.

Unfortunately, Vince is a fiery young man, who cannot see the bigger picture, especially when he is told that he must loose before he can win. After a while of being educated and guided by Eddie, he decides he has had enough and will go it on his own. In the ... Read review

Another Helping of Classic Newman
Review of The Color Of Money (DVD) by suddenend

Advantages: Great Movie
Disadvantages: Nothing in the way of extras

If you read the synopsis that accompanies the product listing for this DVD, you won't need me to tell you that the movie is about professional pool players in the USA. A breed we here in the UK know little about. Although this film is obviously an early vehicle for the blossoming acting skills of a talented young actor called Tom Cruise, the central storyline relies heavily on the viewer having seen his co-star Paul Newman's B&W classic "The Hustler". ... A sequel worth watching!!!
Review of The Color Of Money (DVD) by The_Reviewer1980

Advantages: Fantastically acted, great style and charisma about the film
Disadvantages: None of note

...'The Hustler originally released in the early sixties then this basically is a continuation from that, for those of you that havent it is as the film title would suggest about a Fast but brilliant pool hustler that goes round making money etc by hustling rich folk and winning competitions. The main character in the original Hustler movie Fast Eddie Felzon is now a middle aged man who has pretty much finished in the world of pool but he one day ... Read review
