Advantages: Very funny. Great length Disadvantages: Bit silly at times.
~Synopsis~
The Kerrigan family are just your typical Australian family. Dad Darryl,
mum Sal, daughter Tracy and sons Wayne, Steve & Dale. Their house, which was built on an industrial waste landfill site, is a mess, they aren't verywell educated, they have appalling taste and they have a family member in prison. Sorry, if I've offended any Aussies out there. But the main thing about the Kerrigans is their love for each other and their home, which ... ...the Airport, who's runway is at the bottom of the garden, want to expand onto their land, do the Kerrigans accept the generous offer of cash for their house? No they don't! They hunker down for a fight. They go to their inept solicitor, the one who unsuccessfully defended Wayne, to try to sue the Airport. By a quirk of fate, a very famous barrister agrees to help them in their fight for justice. So will the Kerrigan's save their home? Will they lose? ...

Advantages: Very funny, heartwarming, something for everyone to watch Disadvantages: It is looking a tad dated these days
...and directed by Rob Sitch the Castle is a modern classic. In the same way as Clerks this film had a budget of 0p but yet is so much better than many that cost millions.
I like the other reviwers had the Castle forced upon me by an Aussie mate who thought it was up there with the likes of Monty Python in terms of humour, so I bought it and watched it, and loved it!
The Story
The Castle tells the story of the Kerrigan family. Headed up by Dad Darryl ... ...culinary delights...Steve, eldest brother of the mob, currently serving time for armed robbery. Trace, the only girl in the family who became her dads proudest ever moment when she graduated from the Sunshine Tate school for hair and beauty. Steve Kerrigan is a finder of interesting products in the local free papers, which he ineviatbaly manages to get at knock down prices. For killer items such as jowsting sticks he's your man...and last but not ...

Advantages: great self-deprecating Aussie humour, uplifting Disadvantages: some jokes might not travel well
...after seeing it however that The Castle is a little gem of a film – combining biting satire with an inevitably uplifting conclusion.
The films centres around the Kerrigans, a stereotypical blue collar family living somewhere in suburban Australia. Their lives and ambitions can best be described as simple, but when their home is threatened by airport expansion plans they are forced into taking on the interests of big business to protect their rights. ... ...is their castle.
While the story is straightforward and predictable it is the human angle that gives this film its charm. The Kerrigans are a true ‘bogan’ family and most of the comedy derives from poking fun at their definite lack of sophistication. Indeed the film provides viewers with a host of hilarious catch-phrases which neatly sum this up, although admittedly some references may not be fully appreciated by those outside Australasia. But while ...

Advantages: Very funny, well scripted, excellent acting Disadvantages: None!
...and although i've enjoyed all the many aussie films I've seen, this has to be top of the list. Created by a team that later created The Dish, the storyline is based around a typical Australian family the Kerrigans (after seeing this you may not think this is true, but with discussions with australians on the film, it is much, much more like real aussie life than stuff like Neighbours). The Kerrigans live literally next door to an airport, the runway ... ...them it's much more - the title of the film coming from the fact that "a man's home's his castle". They have pride in everything, any of the family does even if to anyone else it would seem very trivial - Mrs Kerrigan's cooking, middle son Steve's enterprising inventions (and love for bargains) ("he's an ideas man Steve"), even youngest son - and narrator - Dale's news that he dug a hole, gains respect among the family.
Then one day they receive ...

"The Castle" is the funniest aussie movie I think I have ever seen.....and I should know about Australian movies, being an aussie myself! This is an absolute treasure! I actually have it on VHS AND the 'poolroom edition dvd' which is boxed in a green velvet case to look like a pool table...if you have seen the movie you will know the importance of 'the pool room' Everything of great family value eg- Hand made mugs or ashtrays, goes 'straight to the ... ...the song 'We're goin' to Bonnidoon'. :-)
This is a hilarious movie about Darryl Kerrigan, a man who happily resides in the suburbs literally next door to the airport, with everything he wants, until developers threaten to bulldoze the area for a new runway. Darryl decides to dig in and fight to preserve his castle and his way of life.
This really is a fantastic movie and you will find yourself watching many times over and still laughing just as ...
