Advantages: Brilliant film Disadvantages: DVD very poor
...written a full review on the video version of this film, but as I recently treat myself to the DVD version, I thought it was only right that I let you know whether or not the DVD is worth it. There can't be many of you out there who have not at least heard of the film or book of this love story.
**THE FILM**
Basically, the film is a love story about a relationship that was never meant to be between travelling National Geographic photographer Robert ... ...The story is based in the 1960's, and depicts a chance meeting between the two characters when Robert arrives in Iowa to photograph a famous set of bridges. The chemistry between the two is apparent from the first moment they meet, and as Francesca's husband and children are out of town, there is no physical presence to prevent the two from embarking on a passionate short lived love affair. Their time together makes Francesca realise that she has ...

Advantages: An Emotional Journey Disadvantages: Implausible Accent By Meryl Streep.
The Bridges of Madison County is a film set in the heart of rural Iowa, in a place where everyone knows everyone, and where family values are paramount. Sprawling farms stretch into the distance, carving lives into boxes and days into duties. People are happy within what they know, they have structure, but there is precious little time for feelings and emotions in this demanding environment. Based on the novel by Robert James Walker. Meryl Streep ... ...Robert Kincaid, a photographer for The National Geographic, who is sent to Iowa to photograph the covered bridges, famous in the area for their unique style and appearance. The film is based around the love affair which ignites between these two. The drama takes place during the days when Francesca's husband goes away with their family to the County show for 4 days, where they are to exhibit their prize steer. Robert calls at the house for directions ...

Advantages: Nice location shots, a change from more youthful driven romance films Disadvantages: Too long, too heavy, too dreary
Time to fly in the face of popular opinion and voice the fact I didn't enjoy the Bridges of Madison County, surely sacrilege in the eyes of the Oprah generation. I first saw this film, made 1995, on the television and no doubt it will now do the full circle of television seasons. Clint Eastwood both stars and directs this film based on the book by Robert James Waller which I have not read nor feel compelled to now. His leading lady is Hollywood stalwart ... ...an Italian who came to the states when she met an American soldier in her homeland. The Johnsons live in an isolated and rural area of Iowa. It is soon made clear that theirs is a life of structure which can be at times claustrophobic. We join Francesca as she is left in the solitude of her home whilst her husband and children go on a trip to the state fair which will see them from home for over four days. Robert Kincaid (Eastwood) finds himself ...

Advantages: Unbearably tense at the climax Disadvantages: Not quite as fully finished as the book
Forget the fact that this is Meryl Street and Clint Eastwod. Forget the fact the Meryl is stuck in one of her accents that obviously isn't her own, because we know who she is so well. Forget the fact that Clint just sticks with his strong silent type character. This is a fabulous film.
Some might say that it is a love story. I think it is a story about a mid-life crisis. Meryl's family all drive off on a family jaunt for a few days, and she is left ... ...notes, flowers and dancing in the kitchen. Such things as dreams are made of. But then she has to decide between her home/husband/children and a life with this stranger. Hubby comes back while Clint is still in town. The rain lashes down, and she has to choose which car to get into. Legendary direction! I cried and cried.
Woo! I'd better calm down! I love this film. I also love the book. Try it. ...

Advantages: Beautiful love story Disadvantages: Can't think of any.
...just got round to buying the DVD. There aren't any special features worth mentioning on the DVD, but that wasn't why I wanted it. When I came to pay for it, the guy behind the counter said that he's never been able to decide if he fell more in love with Meryl Streep or Clint Eastwood after watching this movie, and I have to say I agree. Eastwood plays Robert Kincaid, a photographer from the National Geographic, travelling through Iowa when he stops ... ...Her family is away for the week, so Francesca decides to show him where he needs to go, and then invites him to join her for dinner. Neither of them expect what happens next - they fall in love, more deeply than either knew was possible, even though they know they can never be together. This is a beautiful love story, that will melt the heart of even the most reluctant viewer. There are some beautiful shots of the US countryside in this movie, and ...
