The Role That Matt Damon Was Bourne To Play

Advantages: Superb cat-and-mouse thriller, with outstanding performances
Disadvantages: A bit long, won't satisfy fans of Ludlom's novel

...HERO ****************************************************************** In 1980, the world was introduced to a new superspy known only as Jason Bourne in “The Bourne Identity.” This crackling novel by Robert Ludlum about a man with amnesia but is now a target by several assassins became a runaway bestseller, and even spawned two follow-up books. I have read the book several times myself, and I always find it a fascinating read; from the first page, ...
...He was fished out of the Mediterranean Sea, his body is scarred with bulled wounds and a frame of microfilm is found in his hip which has a number and the name of Swiss bank. Over time, he realizes that he can speak a variety of languages and has exceptional fighting skills---whoever trained him, obviously trained him well. When he arrives at the bank, he finds a safe deposit box filled with currency, passports and other articles; after he unexpectedly ...

Can Anyone Help? I Dont Know Who I Am

Advantages: Matt Damon, Good Story

...and another film review, over the weekend I had been incredibly bored so instead of doing the usual sit at the computer all day I actually decided to watch a couple of films. Of course yesterdays op was Welcome To Collinwood, today’s is going to be a film that I’ve been a big fan of since it’s release in the cinema. Adapted from a Robert Ludlum novel The Bourne Identity hit our screens in 2002, as an adaptation of this book, which ...

Bourne To Be Riled

Advantages: Diverting thrills
Disadvantages: Predictable and at times ridiculous

Ah, the spy. Bane of all European would-be dictators and cat stroking baldies the world over, they slip in and out of rooms (and women) undetected, with nary a scratch on their pristine hides or a ruffle in their slicked-back hair. “I expect you to perish!” scream the enemies whilst women cream their gusset after seeing men being beaten to death. You gotta love spy movies, because they lend ordinary folks the demeanour of super-heroes ...

The ship’s doctor finds two bullets in his back and a device in his hip that projects the address of a Swiss bank account number. But the man is not dead as the crew assumed (do doctors not think to check people’s pulses?), in fact he’s angry as hell because ...

Jason Bourne Needs Some Identity

Advantages: Good character development, draws you into the story, superbly written, great start to the series
Disadvantages: A little overkill in location desciptions but I feel they become necessary

After finishing The Bourne Supremacy last week I decided that it was probably best to go back and start at the beginning of the series. So I bought myself a copy of The Bourne Identity and sat down on Tuesday night and started reading. Almost a week later and I’ve just out the book onto my shelf having finished it. I’m a big fan of the films and that in part was the reason I was drawn to the books. I noticed during Supremacy that the story of the ...

The only clue to his identity however is found on a small role of film surgically implanted above his hip. The film had only ...

HE WASN'T BOURNE YESTERDAY

Advantages: Matt Damon in a vest
Disadvantages: The ending was a bit tepid

When the crew of a trawler spot a distress beacon floating in the water off the coast of France, they are shocked to find that the beacon is attached to the body of a young man. Unconscious, and injured from extensive bullet wounds, the man’s body yields no clues as to his identity. When he awakes, he is suffering from amnesia, but the crew tend to his wounds, and offer him passage to shore. The only clue to his identity lies in a computer chip, ...

Beneath a layer of cash and valuables, he finds a gun, a wristwatch and numerous foreign passports, all of which contain his picture, but with different names. Understandably puzzled, he decides to make his way to the US embassy to obtain help. But his movements have not gone unnoticed and he soon ...

Identify it for yourself

Advantages: Great storyline, good acting, good directing.
Disadvantages: None

The Bourne Identity is a film from the first of three books written by Robert Ludlum about CIA agent Jason Bourne. Ludlum, who has written nearly two dozen best sellers, was also the Executive Producer for the film. The film is directed by Doug Liman who has Swingers and Go under his belt. He has certainly had long term experience in filming as he started making short films at the tender age of seven and on into junior high school! The general plot ...
...of the plot without ruining the whole movie for you. The simple plot does not make the movie boring though. Quite the contrary. There are lots of things going on in the movie, some of which still intrigue and if I'm honest, puzzle me a bit. Days after watching this film I am still piecing little bits together. Leaving me in no doubt that I would really like to see it again. Although I may have to wait until the video release. So on with the plot... ...

A Man With No Past

Advantages: Fast-paced, exciting, tension-filled
Disadvantages: Some rather thinly realised characters

...reading a book before seeing the film version, if you see it at all, but this is one case where I made an exception. Come to think of it, I don't think I knew that the Matt Damon film 'The Bourne Identity' was based on a book at all. So I saw the film, thought it was wonderful and sought out the book. I found that although there are some names and ideas shared between the book and the film, they are very different in terms of plot and characterisation ...
...different decade to the book. However, once the spectre of the film is banished as an annoying distraction, this is a riveting book - different, certainly, but very good indeed. I shall try to keep references to the film to a minimum from this point onwards! The central character of the book is a man with no past. He can't remember anything about himself, and yet he can speak multiple languages fluently and he has a number of unusual talents. Skills ...

Bourned To Tears

Advantages: Franka Potente and the scenes without Matt Damon.
Disadvantages: I bet Matt Damon wishes he really did have amnesia, then he could forget about Good Will Hunting.

The beauty of The Fugitive was that we didn’t know the whole story until the very end of the movie and therefore all the tension builds up until it explodes in the wonderful finale. We know that he’s innocent and we know who did it, but we don’t know why. All the secrets are kept secret until the final showdown because it makes for entertaining cinema. Minority Report is similar (hero on the run, suspected killer, breathtaking final revelations) ...
...audience spellbound until the very end. Out of the whole genre of wrongly accused/heroes on the run, the key is to hold something from the audience and thereby guarantee their interest and participation. Why on earth then, does The Bourne Identity think it can change these rules and survive. For a film with such a thin plot and no sub-plots, it gives the game away astonishingly quickly. Half an hour into the gruelling 118 minutes running time, I ...

The names Bo... nope don't remember

Advantages: Generally good action and fight scenes.
Disadvantages: Lacklustre conclusion.

The Bourne Identity is one of those spy, secret agent type, action movies with a young fresh faced Matt Damon in the leading role, delivering a performance that roughly translates as "Hey there Schwarzenegger, Stallone and Willis, mines bigger than yours!" Well, something like that. Anyway, maybe he thought he could top Ben Affleck's The Sum of All Fears. The Perils Of Being Bourne With Amnesia

Advantages: Entertaining, not TOO far fetched, car chases in Minis are always great
Disadvantages: Not for purists, lacks that 'blockbuster' feel, stupid development near the end, easily misconstrued as having a "who am I?" plot hook

The Bourne Identity is based upon a Robert Ludlum book but thankfully steers well clear of trying to follow it TOO closely, which is a mistake often made by book-film adaptations. Some may remember a 1980's mini series which unsuccessfully tried to bring the same book to the screen in around 4 hours and failed miserably by sticking too close to the text for example - this movie takes the general idea and gets on with the action instead which works ...
...of the book would be forgiven for being disappointed by this, but I feel most others will be pretty satisfied by what is on display here as long as they aren't expecting anything other than a retro-espionage thriller. Personally, I enjoyed it. The movie opens with the body of a young man(Matt Damon) being hauled about a Russian ship. The poor sod has been shot twice and dumped into the ocean deep out at sea but somehow he is still alive. A little ...

Having recently upped sticks and departed the sunny North Wales shore to be with my other half in the cold North East, I've found myself watching many, many more films. Which is superb as I would usually just wait until a film was shown on the TV and watch it then instead! So, as of last night, we sat down to watch The Bourne Identity. Released in 2002, I could remember seeing all the trailers for the film but must admit, I didn't really know what it was about. It was one of those that I wasn't overly bothered ...

...ways this is one of the hardest movie reviews I’ve ever written and will probably ever write, largely because, depending on what stance I take my opinion is literally poles apart. On the one hand it is an intelligent, original and highly impressive action film with two strong lead performances, a coherent and suspense-ridden plot and exceptional action sequences. On the other it is an adaptation of a book, not just any book mind, but one of ...
...some thirteen years ago. The Bourne Identity was written by the late Robert Ludlum back in 1980 and was the first of a trilogy that proved to be his creative and story-telling zenith. His novels of recent years are shallow, characterless nonsense in comparison. Unfortunately whilst the central premise is used in the film, many of the wonderful intricacies of the plot and one of the main protagonists have been conveniently shelved to its detriment. ...
