As THE BOURNE IDENTITY begins, a man who may or may not be Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is found floating in the Mediterranean Sea and is hauled onto a fishing boat. When the ship's...
more...doctor examines the unconscious castaway, he discovers two bullet wounds and an implanted device that displays a Swiss bank account number. With nothing but this code, the amnesiac Bourne travels to Zurich and gains access to a safe-deposit box containing a gun, thousands of dollars in various currencies, and valid passports from numerous countries--each listing a different identity. Within minutes, Bourne is on the run from a seemingly ever-present agency, relying on language and fighting skills he didn't even know he possessed. Offering $20,000 for a ride to Paris, Bourne gains the reluctant help of the nomadic Marie (Franka Potente). Meanwhile, the shadowy organization, headed by a tough-talking bureaucrat (Chris Cooper), sends numerous assassins (including the Professor, played by Clive Owen) after Bourne and Marie. As their situation grows more perilous, the two strangers struggle to find out who Bourne really is and why they are being hunted.
Doug Liman's adaptation of Robert Ludlum's best-selling novel is a remarkable exercise in straightforward storytelling, with the director wisely choosing to focus on Bourne and his quest for identity. The fight sequences are thrilling, but never overly glamorized, and the film's pacing is engaging and deliberate. Damon, who displays genuine bewilderment as his character discovers his almost-superhuman abilities, anchors the proceedings with the subtle charm of an unlikely action hero. Potente also shines as Bourne's road companion, a savvy woman who slowly builds an utterly believable relationship with the confused man. Bearing distinct affinity for its European setting and classic Hollywood suspense films, THE BOURNE IDENTITY succeeds as an unusually smart character-driven thriller.

The Role That Matt Damon Was Bourne To Play
Review of The Bourne Identity DVD by eve6kicksass

Advantages: Superb cat-and-mouse thriller, with outstanding performances
Disadvantages: A bit long, won't satisfy fans of Ludlom's novel

...#B000PY52AY ****************************************************************** INTRODUCTION: LUDLUM’S HERO ****************************************************************** In 1980, the world was introduced to a new superspy known only as Jason Bourne in “The Bourne Identity.” This crackling novel by Robert Ludlum about a man with amnesia but is now a target by several assassins became a runaway bestseller, and even spawned two follow-up ... Can Anyone Help? I Dont Know Who I Am
Review of The Bourne Identity DVD by Andy.mack

Advantages: Matt Damon, Good Story
Disadvantages: Poor remaining cast

...and another film review, over the weekend I had been incredibly bored so instead of doing the usual sit at the computer all day I actually decided to watch a couple of films. Of course yesterdays op was Welcome To Collinwood, today’s is going to be a film that I’ve been a big fan of since it’s release in the cinema. Adapted from a Robert Ludlum novel The Bourne Identity hit our screens in 2002, as an adaptation of this book, which ... Read review

Bourne To Be Riled
Review of The Bourne Identity DVD by peppersinclaire

Advantages: Diverting thrills
Disadvantages: Predictable and at times ridiculous

Ah, the spy. Bane of all European would-be dictators and cat stroking baldies the world over, they slip in and out of rooms (and women) undetected, with nary a scratch on their pristine hides or a ruffle in their slicked-back hair. “I expect you to perish!” scream the enemies whilst women cream their gusset after seeing men being beaten to death. You gotta love spy movies, because they lend ordinary folks the demeanour of super-heroes ... Read review

HE WASN'T BOURNE YESTERDAY
Review of The Bourne Identity DVD by LostWitness

Advantages: Matt Damon in a vest
Disadvantages: The ending was a bit tepid

When the crew of a trawler spot a distress beacon floating in the water off the coast of France, they are shocked to find that the beacon is attached to the body of a young man. Unconscious, and injured from extensive bullet wounds, the man’s body yields no clues as to his identity. When he awakes, he is suffering from amnesia, but the crew tend to his wounds, and offer him passage to shore. The only clue to his identity lies in a computer chip, implanted ... Read review

Identify it for yourself
Review of The Bourne Identity DVD by Ankes-un-amun

Advantages: Great storyline, good acting, good directing.
Disadvantages: None

The Bourne Identity is a film from the first of three books written by Robert Ludlum about CIA agent Jason Bourne. Ludlum, who has written nearly two dozen best sellers, was also the Executive Producer for the film. The film is directed by Doug Liman who has Swingers and Go under his belt. He has certainly had long term experience in filming as he started making short films at the tender age of seven and on into junior high school! The general ... Read review

Bourned To Tears
Review of The Bourne Identity DVD by willgould

Advantages: Franka Potente and the scenes without Matt Damon.
Disadvantages: I bet Matt Damon wishes he really did have amnesia, then he could forget about Good Will Hunting.

The beauty of The Fugitive was that we didn’t know the whole story until the very end of the movie and therefore all the tension builds up until it explodes in the wonderful finale. We know that he’s innocent and we know who did it, but we don’t know why. All the secrets are kept secret until the final showdown because it makes for entertaining cinema. Minority Report is similar (hero on the run, suspected killer, breathtaking final revelations) and ... Read review

The names Bo... nope don't remember
Review of The Bourne Identity DVD by Shalimar

Advantages: Generally good action and fight scenes.
Disadvantages: Lacklustre conclusion.

The Bourne Identity is one of those spy, secret agent type, action movies with a young fresh faced Matt Damon in the leading role, delivering a performance that roughly translates as "Hey there Schwarzenegger, Stallone and Willis, mines bigger than yours!" Well, something like that. Anyway, maybe he thought he could top Ben Affleck's The Sum of All Fears. Directed by - Doug Liman Starring - Matt Damon, Franka Potente, Chris Cooper, Clive Owen, ... ...and you can't remember who the hell you are, or what your life has been like. Then you find out soon afterwards that a bunch of security blokes are trying to kill you, and you don't have a clue why. I could imagine you'd be a little cheesed off. But this is the problem the man in the Bourne Identity faces. Discovered unconscious by a fishing boat in the Mediterranean Sea, the crew of the boat initially thought the man (played by Matt Damon) was ... Read review

The Perils Of Being Bourne With Amnesia
Review of The Bourne Identity DVD by wampyrii

Advantages: Entertaining, not TOO far fetched, car chases in Minis are always great
Disadvantages: Not for purists, lacks that 'blockbuster' feel, stupid development near the end, easily misconstrued as having a "who am I?" plot hook

The Bourne Identity is based upon a Robert Ludlum book but thankfully steers well clear of trying to follow it TOO closely, which is a mistake often made by book-film adaptations. Some may remember a 1980's mini series which unsuccessfully tried to bring the same book to the screen in around 4 hours and failed miserably by sticking too close to the text for example - this movie takes the general idea and gets on with the action instead which works ... Okay so the twin gun is not in there, the slow motion is not in there and hell even the trademark seagulls aren’t in here but the action sequences and whole premise of the story is very John Woo reminding me of his best films, The Killer and Hard Boiled. Someone was definitely watching his films when they made this. Based on a book of the same name, The Bourne Identity is another of the films that got put back a year due to the events ... Review of The Bourne Identity DVD by afy9mab

Advantages: Slick action sequences, good supporting cast
Disadvantages: Lack of dialogue, boring leading man

The Bourne Identity centres around Jason Bourne, a man who is found floating in the Mediterranean Sea with two bullets in his back and a Swiss bank account number in his thigh. The only problem is, he can’t remember who he is or how he got there. The fact that he has extensive knowledge of martial arts, weaponry and languages, doesn’t seem to give him any clues. Okay, so it’s about an amnesiac secret agent - so far, so Long Kiss ... Read review
