I wish I was a Dolphin

Advantages: scenery, subject
Disadvantages: plot

...have come to love. The story in its simplicity is that of Jacques and his love of the sea and its creatures but also draws in Enzo a champion freediver and someone who has known Jacques since childhood, and Johana an american Insurance worker who meets Jacques in Peru where his bodily responses to being underwater and at depth are being monitored by a scientist. The plot as it is is sadly weak meaning the film relies on the gorgeous scenery of ...
...Johana, but this is not the love story of Jacques and Johana but of Jacques and the sea, as such you are forced to recognise that Johana is more an accessory than a pivotal part of the story and it is the sea and his underwater family of dolphins that Jacques truely loves. At 163 minutes long this is a long time to be watching a film which consists of little more than scenery but some how there is something more to it, a sense that in some way it ...

The Deep

Advantages: Fantastic to look at, good performances
Disadvantages: Ultimate lack of substance

...1988's 'Le Grande Bleue'. At the end, as you draw in a deep breath, you're convinced you've watched something of great depth and meaning, but only in hindsight does it strike you that the only thing in the movie with any great character is the ocean itself. A truly massive triumph of style over substance, 'Le Grande Bleue' is certainly a visual tour de force, even if repeated viewings highlight the vague characterisations of the leads. Jacques ...
...accident. With few friends, besides the great expanse of the Mediterranean Sea, Jacques retreats further inside of himself, allowing occasional friend, the Italian Enzo (Jean Reno) to be the extrovert. Years pass and the next time we encounter Jacques is deep in Peru. An insurance investigator arrives at a scientific research base to oversee a claim for a vehicle lost in the icy waters of a lake. The American investigator, Johana Baker (Rosanna ...

The Big Blue

Advantages: extraordinary story, nusic, cast, sceneries...
Disadvantages: none

...17 years old, living in the south of Italy. One evening, a holidaymaker projects a small film in which appears a perfect unknown man but who breathes in and out happiness, without oxygen, it is Jacques Mayol. Luc Besson is filled with wonder, and as of the following day he decides to be tested on how long he can hold his breath for and already is able to take it for 4 minutes and to go down up to forty meters. But it is only when Mayol has just crossed ...
...film of it. He directed the spectacle in such manners he put in scene rather strange characters, kind of romantic Martians deliberately beside their time and the common direction. That is what makes the film a real and pure beauty. It is firstly and simply the story of a young boy called Jacques Mayol whose father died while working away under the sea. Jacques has the unique chance to hold his breath and go under water (mainly to feed fishes) ...
