Advantages: Starts well Disadvantages: Descends into a farce
Alex Rider thinks he is just an ordinary schoolboy living with his uncle and a housekeeper after his parents' death. Then his uncle is killed, and Alex quickly finds out that his uncle's job wasn't as boring as he thought - he worked for MI6. His bosses, Mr Blunt and Mrs Jones, decide that Alex would be the ideal candidate for a spy, and, after a training course with the SAS, send him off on his first mission. This is to infiltrate the world of Darrius ... ...to install one of his computers, known as Stormbreakers, into every school in the country. But is Sayle's plan as philanthropic as it seems? And will Alex be able to cope with the responsibilities handed to him?
This film is based on a book of the same name by Anthony Horowitz - I have not read the book, so cannot comment on any similarities/differences between the two mediums. I am the first to admit that this film isn't really aimed at my profile ...

Advantages: Funny, fast-paced, very tonge-in-cheek (& Alex is cute!) Disadvantages: Can't think of any
Bought from Tesco Jersey for £10.85.
This film is, in my opinion, very funny - it had me giggling regularly from start to finish! It did get some bad reviews, but I think this is because the reviewers were too serious and didn't realise how much it sends itself up!
The DVD case quotes a review from The Times: "Death-defying car chases, jaw dropping gadgets and enough adrenaline to boot James Bond into a bin liner". I have to say this is somewhat ... ...very simple: evil genius plans to destroy millions of British schoolchildren (despite being middle-aged, he's still throwing a tantrum about being bullied at school) - reluctant young hero saves the day just as the button is about to be pressed. There is a little more to it than that, but not a lot and it doesn't matter because the action is the important thing.
The tagline is "you're never too young to die" (one of Darrius Sayle's lines), but I ...

Stormbreaker
I borrowed this DVD from my brother-in-law and I have to say I was sceptic, he told me it was a about a 14 year old spy. And that was enough to put me off. It sat on my shelve for a while I until one night when the telly was depressing and I was bored I finally opened the case and tried the film out. The cast
Robbie Coltraine Damain Lewis Ewan Mcgregor Bill Nighty Sohpie Okonedo Alex Pettyfer
Andy Serkis
Allicia Silverstone Micky ... ...actors only have small roles)
its great to see a good english cast, some great actors here even if they only have a few lines.

...on the book shortly.
Stormbreaker follows a fourteen year old boy called Alex Rider (Alex Pettyfer), who, after his uncle Ian Rider (Ewan McGregor) is killed is thrown into an adventure which requires him to take the place of his uncle, who was working for the MI6 and spying on the millionaire entrepreneur, Darius Sayle (Mickey Rourke) who plans to give away one of his enormously powerful Stormbreaker computers to every school in the country. The ... ...better?
Ah, the book, Stormbreaker is an outstanding book and if you liked the film but haven't read it, I advise you do so; they have a lot of differences. First of all, the scenes with Alex at the SAS training camp lasted 50 pages, but the film covered it in the time taken to type one. The scenes with Jack Starbright and Nadia Vole don't take place, the MI6 headquarters is in a bank, Alex find's his way through the mines to the factory floor by ...

MI6 dont trust Darius so they want Alex to go and find out what is really going on. What follows is a race against time to find out what Darius's real intentions are in giving away the computers.

Advantages: High flying kick ass schoolboy film Disadvantages: not as good as the book
Well Stormbreaker, let's start with the cast first...
Alex Pettyfer as Alex Rider: Young, his name is Alex, is that so he doesn't forget who he his playing???!!!??? Hmm, well he does well I guess, lots of action for him, and some lines to learn, and he sort of suits the part.
Sarah Bolger as Sabina Pleasure: Again young, and a bit pathetic really, didn't rate her much. Ewan McGregor as Ian Rider: Not in it for very long, but he makes it worthwile, ... ...more of him in films!
Damian Lewis as as Yassen Gregorovich: Truly evil, has that evil look about him, and the way he delivers his lines, scary I guess is one way to put it. Alicia Silverstone as Jack Starbright: Beautiful, even though she is American, but then that was written in the book, good fight scene too. Bill Nighy as Alan Blunt: OMG, Bill Nighy, and guess what, he is the same in this film as he is in all the others, he doesn't suit the ...

Advantages: averagely entertaining blockbuster Disadvantages: bad acting; unrealistic
'''Introduction:''' Having read the Alex Rider books, I was interested to see what the film would be like. My conclusion is that it just shouldn't have been made. Anthony Horowitz gets away with some completely unbelievable events in his novels because they are novels. When they happen on the big screen you start to see just how unrealistic the whole thing is.
'''Plot:''' 14 year old Alex Rider is living a normal life when his uncle dies suddenly. ... ...car accident, as he was told. All of a sudden, Alex is approached by MI6, and is asked to help them with the assignment that his uncle was killed on.
After a quick stay at an SAS training camp, Alex is off to infiltrate the goings-on of Harold Sayle, a billionaire about to donate thousands of his new "Stormbreaker" computers to all the schools in England. MI6 suspect that something might be up.
By the end of the film, Alex has escaped death at ...

This review is just base on a movie I have seen recently at the cinema, and not based on the DVD version, so does not contain details of what the box looks like, special features or extra bits. If you are thinking of buying the DVD of this film, make sure its dodgy copy filmed by someone ... ...may ask? Simply because counting the times somebody in front stands up and obscures the view of the film, or the guy drops the phone is so much more fun than the film itself.
The film has been labeled an action/adventure, but sadly doesn't contain any of the above, and just succeeds in putting you to sleep. Cast

Advantages: cool special effects, wicked gadgets Disadvantages: very much a "james-bond-as-a-kid" film
only a couple of major points on this film
1) this film features a young boy recruited by MI6 to work for them to save the world
2) he doesn't die in the process.
so, that said, if you don't mind the main point of the film being totally unrealistic, then we're fine.
The gadgets in this film are actually quite funny. Using a nintendo DS as a gadget, for example, to do a million and one different things.
there's laughs a-plenty in this film. it ... ...leader of a 14-18's youth club, and we watched this film there on a big-screen through a data projector, with a full surroundsound system. I would reccomend to anyone who wants to watch this film, to do so with a surround-sound system. the extra involvement that this gives you in the film is actually quite astounding (i also pre-watched it for suitability on a normal 2-speaker system).
One thing to be rather aware of with this film is the distinct ...

It starts with a great book, a great author;
The book is a hit;
The film comes out;
What a shame
I think this film is nowhere near as god as the book, the book was amazing, but the film lacks the realism it needs. it totally fails to deliver for me.
the effects were good, but the acting was rubbish, and it lacked the violence and suspense of a spy action/thriller.

Advantages: Good sets and some very good actors. Disadvantages: cheesy main character and too 'kidified' in general.
After reading the novel and loving it, I consequently held a skeptical mind over the making of a full-length film. When I found out the movie was a PG my expectations lowered - but with actors such as Damian Lewis and Ewan McGregor being cast, I contemplated the film being 'O.K.' The film begins with Alex Rider, a seemingly normal child, with a normal dad and nanny at school carrying out his usual daily life. He is disoppointed to discover his father ... ...as he's held up in a 'business meal'. What Alex doesn't know is that his father occupation is far more exciting than he ever anticipated. His dad is actually a British spy working to uncover the truth behind one man's new invention which could be of danger to the country. After his father is tragically killed on his mission, Alex is introduced to the life-style his father had by the same organisation. From then the film follows Alex and his task ...

Advantages: Good film for the kids and those who don't mind the cheese aspect Disadvantages: If you can't stand cheesiness, and the childlike action element then you won't like it
Although the film itself is fairly entertaining it is clearly aimed at children. Being based on the book the main character is only a teenager this is a slight put off and means that there is quite of alot of cheesiness as he is recruited by a secret agency.
The storyline itself isn't brilliant, again the idea of a teenage being a spy although may attract younger audiences isn't the most attracting thing to any one else. Also the plot consists of ... ...classmates who ridiculed him at school. Some of the humour used shows that the directors/producers of the film new that adult audiences would be watching as the cheesiness sometimes seems intentional and used for comic effect.
It does have quite a bit of intense action within it and is fairly compelling, the main put off for people who aren't children is the cheesiness. I'd rate it 7/10. ...
