Humanity's Last Stand

Advantages: Finally a good adaptation of a Stephen King novel
Disadvantages: Perhaps Length, but believe me it's needed

...watched previous screen adaptations of Stephen King novels and been grievously disappointed, I was, as you can imagine a little apprehensive of the prospect of devoting six hours of my life to the mini series The Stand. But as I received a DVD boxset of the same said adaptation as a Christmas gift from my devoted children I felt duty bound to watch it, over the space of three nights. The Story ************ After the accidental release of a killer ...
...However, do look out for Stephen King in a cameo role at the end of the film. But Why Six Hours ********************** The original novel involves a long, and very complex story. Even lasting six hours, the mini series does not contain all the minor storylines, or as much character development as the book. However, it does come close, and if had been any longer, only a Stephen King fanatic would have had the endurance to watch it to the end. I ...

Test of human kind. Test of viewers patience!

Advantages: Sticks to its roots, Surprisingly well made
Disadvantages: Ending was naff

The Stand is Stephen Kings best selling book of all time, and this is his tv adaptation, directed by Mick Garris. WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT? ---------------------------------- 'The Stand' is essentially a good old fashioned battle of good and evil where two supernatural forces do battle and without giving too much much away on that it is best to go from the beginning. A deadly virus which is originally suspected to be flu, manages to wipe out virtually ...
...for the survivors to bunch together to begin to rebuild and repair their lives. All of the survivors have one thing in common. They are all having visions of either one of two superficially human, but very spiritual and supernatural forces. One of these is the kind natured and benevolent Mother Abigail who works on the side of God, and the other is the evil and dark character of Randall Flagg who is on the side of Satan. Survivors are drawn to their ...

On Which Side Will You Stand?

Advantages: A brilliant adaptation of a brilliant book
Disadvantages: May give some people nightmares (how true could some of this be?)

...scene selection but thats it. The lack of extras is a bit of a let-down, no for me it's a huge let-down. As a fan of King's work I would really have liked to have seen a few extras in the way of cast/crew interviews or a how the film was made but it is a 2-disc set just for the film so it would have been a 3 disc set. Maybe one day the powers that be will bring out a 3 disc special edition for die-hard fans like me! I will leave you with the subtitle ...

As close as it gets

Advantages: Fantastic story and King makes sure it's pretty near to the book
Disadvantages: Long!

...good film adaptation of a Stephen King book, and it's even less likely if it's turned into a mini-series. The Stand is, however, arguably one of King's best tales and at least some of this magic has been transferred to the small screen with King himself at the helm of the process. The story follows a band of people who have come together as the only survivors of a chemical weapon accidentally let loose on the public. The virus quickly eradicates ...
...guitar. But having Stephen King involved with the project has meant that the feel and general character of the book has been kept in the TV version and both fans and newcomers alike should get something out of this. Watch out for one of King’s famous cameo appearances too, this time as a snow plow driver near the end of the film. It's probably the best work so far from a Stephen King Miniseries, and with a good cast, strong music score and ...

Mother Abigail versus Randall Flagg...

Advantages: Good summary
Disadvantages: Touches the surface

...Flagg. The Stand is Stephen King’s magnum opus. The story has been put into a mini series of 6 hours in total. The problem with bringing a book to the TV screen is: what do you leave out and what do you include? In The Stand this is done perfectly. There are no gaping holes in the story, something which is quite rare for an adaptation. The downside to deleting entire chapters from the book is that the TV version might touch the surface, which is ...

...way to defeat Randall and save the human race as it once was. The visual effects are fantastic, the fear that it might eventually happen one day is more nail biting (Ebola virus), and this Stephen King novel made into a movie is a must see for any film fanatic. ...

Together you will stand

Advantages: Brilliant version of the book
Disadvantages: can be sad in places

...I love The Stand by Stephen King, and the tv adaptation is one of the best ever. Very few books ever make it to the screen successfully, usually major chunks of storyline and characters are lost along the way to make it more viewer-friendly. This is not the case with The Stand. Sure, there are a few minor changes, but nothing so major you want to switch off in disgust. I am sure that most people reading this must have read the book and are probably ...
...they have already imagined. I know that I build pictures of the characters in my head, what they look like and how they talk. For those of you who don't know, The Stand is about a deadly virus which is unleashed by a military lab, wiping out almost the entire population of Earth. A few terrified individuals set out on a desperate race to find other survivors. The story is basically about good versus evil, with Mother Abigail on the good side and ...
