Advantages: The Borg are back Disadvantages: The film is not long enough
...the best of all the Star Trek films, certainly the best outing from the "Next Generation" cast so far (Hopes are high for the forth coming tenth entry “Nemesis” though). The crew of the Enterprise faces up to the threat of the evil Borg, a cybernetic race hell-bent on "assimilating" all in their path, in this thrilling adventure.
The crew of the Next Generation were introduced to the Borg in a season 2 episode of the TV series “Q Who?”, way back ... ...film which is reminiscent of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan –although the subject is handled with a more restrain here –reflecting the obvious differences in the characters of Picard and Khan! Khan was unashamedly out for revenge where as Picard tries to deny that he could be consumed by such an emotion (A fact that has to be bluntly pointed out to him ultimately - by the 21st century character of “Lilly” –played with great gusto by Alfre Woodard).

...were expecting this, the eight Star Trek film, to be a lot better. (In case you managed to miss it or haven't seen many of the films, all the off numbered Star Trek films up to 7 were awful, while the even-numbered films were good - strange but true…) Fortunately, we were right - First Contact, while it certainly has its flaws, is well worth seeing and Star Trek: The Next Generation fans were certainly not left feeling disappointed again. If you ... ...of course decides (in true Star Trek fashion) to disobey orders and go to fight the Borg. Data says "I think I speak for everyone when I say…. to hell with orders" - just one of many extremely corny lines in the film. (Not as bad as Worf's "Assimilate this!" as he dispatched some Borg… probably the worst line (and the least convincingly delivered) since Arnie played the icy baddy in Batman & Robin…) But anyway… the Enterprise goes back, Picard takes ...

First Contact is my favourite ST movie of all, beit the old or the next generation. And is a definate improvement over the disappointing STNG:Generations movie as well.
One of the bonuses with this film is the growing maturity of director Jonathan Frakes, who also plays Commander William Thomas Riker (Captain Picard's Number One). Frakes cut his directing teeth on a few STNG episodes back in the early 90s during the 7 season run. And all that patience ... ...you're not a Trekkie fan then this film will probably lose some of its drama since you have to know who the evil Borg are and why Picard is just a trifle hesitant getting too involved with them again.
Of course to Trekkie fans everything just slips into place & totally understood. The Borg & the USS Enterprise go back in time to Earth 2063, just after WW3. The Borg hope to assimilate Earth before Man can travel through space faster than the speed ...

...beat the original series of Star Trek despite it’s creaky set’s and not too convincing aliens. This 1979 film was the first time Star Trek crossed over to the big screen and big budget. The crew were probably about 10 years older since they’d last been seen on the Enterprise but they were still believable. The plot revolves around an alien spacecraft that is heading towards earth intent on destruction after earth’s non-response to it’s friendly signals. ...

Star Trek:First Contact is one of the "even" Trek films, that is the eighth trek fil from Paramount. As with all "even" Trek films First Contact grips the viewer from beginning to end, giving the seasoned Trek fan limitless action and story line as well as letting anyone with little knowledge of the Trek universe follow the heros without needing to see any episode from the last thirty years!

Advantages: An excellent introduction to the new crew Disadvantages: May not appeal to non-trekkies
...is the first of the Star Trek movies to be based entirely on the Next Generation crew. In the previous movie Generations, we saw the transition from the old series which included Kirk, Spock et al to the new crew of Picard, Riker, Data etc.

The Borg have travelled back in time in an attempt to take over Earth before they can find Warp power and join the ... ...in time (by being caught in a time bubble thus avoiding disappearing as the federation essentially dissappears) in an attempt to stop this from happening.
Linking to an episode of the original seried we see the NG crew helping the inventor of Warp succeed in his quest to launch a spaceship while ensuring that the borg do not manage to stop the launch.
The story is well written and very clever. The characters, true to their NG beginnings are improved ...

...Paramounts cancellation of the new Star Trek series that was meant to start production in the late 70's. The film won many special effects awards and obviously benefited from the Sci-fi interest that followed in the wake of Star Wars. The concpet is good, reunite a bitter Admiral Kirk who is desperate for Starship command again, an angry McCoy forced back into service, Spock searching for a higher intelligence along with the rest of the misfits! ... ...until the next film) and the script which is essentially an extended episode. Fans of Star Trek shouldn't miss this film as it introduces the updated and refitted Enterprise yet to the non-trek fans out there - skip this fim and watch Star Trek II - it's a great improvement! ...

Of the three films featuring The Next Generation crew,ST:FC is the best yet,even ranking among The Wrath Of Khan,The Voyage Home,and The Undiscovered Country.Unlike the other TNG films,this is not a two hour big budget TV episode,but a real movie that's fast paced,action packed and has agree of warmth and humor.Patrick Stewart is always a command presence as Capt.Picard(Kirk may be the best Captain,but Stewart is the best actor to sit in the chair),and ... ...well as terrifying.And the rest of his crew(with the exception of Brent Spiner's Data)is not overlooked as they were in Generations.A great battle scene with the borg(which includes DS9's Defiant)is followed by scenes alternating between 2063 earth and a war zone with the Borg on the Enterprise-E.Sometimes the audience feels like they're watching two different movies,and the last scene with the Borg Queen seems like an all too convienient TV ending.Aside ...

Star Trek: First Contact, as Jonathan Frakes first foray into big screen directing, is mesmerising.
Perhaps it is the scary feeling you get when you realise the Borg have boarded the ship, or the opening scene with Picard reliving his time as Locutus, or the seductive performance of Alice Krige as the Borg Queen. All of these serve to put you on edge, and teach you that Star Trek is not just for kids after all.
Patrick Stewart puts in a performance ... ...in the early years of Star Trek Next Generation.
The entire crew is there, including Data, whom becomes the new "love" of the Borg Queen's life.
The rest of the crew are engaged in saving the first encounter of humans with another species, as conducted by Zephram Cochrane, or protecting the ship from being taken over by the Borg and putting up with Picard's sudden decision that they will fight to the bitter end.

It was never obvious from this film that the "Star Trek" franchise would become such a hot property, leading to an endless series of films and several spin-off series (one of which would then be killed off and resurrected in film form, apparently because it's more profitable that way).
Anyone with a fondness for the original TV series - and I have some, although I would hardly call myself a fan - will probably be charmed by some parts of this film. ... ...begrudge their getting into uniforms again, nor the chance to play against some decent special effects.
The characters don't seem to have developed much during their absence, and the story felt to me like an extended episode of the TV series. But despite these reservations it's a likeable film, and "Star Trek" fans will hardly be waiting for a recommendation from me before watching it. As star treks first film they make a real attempt at entertaining and keeping the star trek reality alive by designing new outfits, species and starships. Although all of this worked out fine the part which needed improvement would be the acting and storyline. Yes these actors and actresses have been doing the job well for the last X ammount of years but they had missed out on the realisation which they grew to enjoy in later films. They could act ...
