Advantages: A very good music score Disadvantages: Very poor movie when compared to the growth in the rest of the series
...front ear.'
After watching Star Trek 4 - Journey Home, and enjoying the quality of effects, the excellent plot and the very good acting I was looking forward to the next installment of Star Trek - 'The Final Frontier'. The initial previews looked good, so I settled into my cramped seat in the Odeon Theater in Cardiff, surrounded by several funny looking aliens and began to munch on my popcorn.
My initial thoughts are good, as I see camaraderie ... ...so many people to watch Star Trek.
Finally, as the movie began to get moving, and I perhaps saw too many similarities to the first movie, I became a little disillusioned with Star Trek.
While on shore leave with Dr McCoy and Spock, and after singing a round of 'Row Row Row your boat', Kirk is called back to the Enterprise to investigate a disturbance on Nimbus III, which is renowned as a planet of peace. (This initial sequence, ...

...Out of the ten Star Trek films, where would you rank it?: 10th
You know that feeling you get in your throat when you know you are going to be sick but your body hasn't caught up to your mind yet. That is the feeling I get every time I think about the abomination that is Star Trek V.
In Premiere Magazine's 'Top 20 Films For Summer' of 1989 Star Trek V came in fourth behind Indiana Jones, Batman and Ghostbusters II. When you find out it only managed ... ...the second lowest grossing Star Trek movie (ahead of 'Nemesis' which didn't have a summer release) it slowly dawns on you how bad this film was. And the fault of this can lie only at one mans door; William Shatner himself.
The story, if you can call it that, follows Kirk (recently demoted back to Captain) and crew sent on the new and untried Enterprise-A to find out just what the devil is going on the 'Planet Of Galactic Peace' in the Neutral Zone. ...

Advantages: A brand new Enterprise! Disadvantages: It feels so slow, it lacks the pace of an adventurous Sci-fi film!
...with Kirks every whim! Star Trek five was directed by Leonard Nimoy and is dare I say....the weakest of the Star Trek movie franchise. To be fair to it though, there are so moments of genius. I loved Mr. Spock, Bones and Kirk singing 'Row Row Row your boat' around the camp fire. It is a touching moment, especially when Kirk laments that he has always known that he will die alone...it is like the last supper for three dear colleagues...who have become ... ...one was burnt up in Star Trek 3). It was originally the USS Yorktown, but was renamed in honour of Kirk and his crew who had just saved Earth...again (see Star Trek 4)! The scenes with the rocket boots are also really well done and a lot of fun. The film is about the search for God and features many of the fine original cast. it also, features Spocks brother...a Vulcan who has enbraced his 'humanity'. the film has all of the elements that we have ...

Advantages: Comic moments Disadvantages: Short on story line
The fifth and possibly weakest of all Trek films, the Fianl Frontier has a great idea. Reunite Spock with his emotional, half-brother who thinks he can lead his followers on to find God - cool! Anyway, budget problems and Shanters over reliance on comedy means this films fails - especially when the fan dance by Uhura is watched. She's a great charcater - but would a platoon of guards really be that captivated? Also - why is the Enterprise th only ... ...Kirk is at the heart of the Federation with in theory hundres of ships close by yet The Planet of Galactic Peace borders the Klingon and Rommulan Empires - a huge distance away and hopefully patrolled by at least one experienced Captain! Anyway, Kirk & Co. go boldly forth, have the Enterprise hijacked and the crew brainwashed (except good old Scotty who makes a true comic moment in rescuing Kirk, Spock and McCoy - excellent!)
God turns out to be ...

...straight - I do like Star Trek, but this has to be the low point of the who franchise. Absolutely nothing happens in the film and the crew of the Enterprise are playing the whole lot for laughs!!! My recommendation - stay well away unless you dress up as a Starfleet Officer on the weekend or you are REALLY bored. ...

Advantages: Good music Disadvantages: story, special effects and acting
Star trek 5 the final frontier was one of the strangest star trek films to date. It doesn't even have good special effects and the acting is not as good as previous performances. The only good thing about this film is the music done by Jerry Goldsmith.
The story starts with Kirk, Spock and Mccoy camping. But shore leave is soon cancelled and the incomplete USS Enterprise leaves space dock on course for Nimbus 3. A hostage situation has taken place, ... ...film very well.
Overall, star trek 5 the final frontier is a do not buy. It has rubbish special effects, a stupid story and laid back acting. It really is not a good film and not a good star trek film at that. I do not recommend this film. ...

Advantages: Interesting idea Disadvantages: Not handled very well
...isn't a bad film by Star Trek standards, although it also has its moments of supreme daftness. The action starts when the Enterprise is hijacked by a prophet, driven by his dream to find God and give him the Enterprise to move around him. Fortunately Kirk realises that there's nothing in the Bible about starships and they blast the imposter deity to bits before indulging in some vacuous "who knows" talk about religion without which the film probably ... ...of cringeworthy embarrassment in the film: fortunately there are also plenty of intriguing moments and even some moving ones, for example when McCoy explains that he has always been haunted by the time he euthanised his dying father, only months before a cure for the disease was discovered.
I think we should probably give credit to the series for tackling more ambitious subjects, even if the scriptwriters are careful to make sure those subjects ...

Advantages: A real sense of the star trek galaxy. Disadvantages: Still not the top of the line we use to see.
With the not so good performance of The Voyage Home we see a much better film as we return to the more realistic trouble some time where not all ships run smoothly. With the idea of god and an amazing life form in the centre of the galaxy it will have any trekker curious. We see the Klingons, Vulcan and Humans all playing roles not seen before with a few other species mixed in. The film moves from on planet fighting to starship as the adrenalin flows ...
