Advantages: Its yet another Star Trek movie Disadvantages: None for me - the films are actually getting better!
...know this is my third Star Trek review in a row but I am determined - if hubby insists on making me watch the films, then I am going to share my opinions with all my fellow ciaoers!
This can be acquired through blah.com for a very reasonable price of just £5.99 (P&P free). Other sites online are charging anything from £6.95 to £15.99 so it is advisable to shop around before getting this.
Synopsis
~~~~~~~
The film starts with a short playback ... ...one go. Normally with Star Trek, my husband has to play the same film 3 times before I know the plot. I enjoyed this film and when asked I have had to say that I do recommend it!
DVD Extras
~~~~~~~~~
These are a complete let-down in my eyes as all you get is the original theatrical trailer - cast interviews or "the making of" would be much more interesting. This extra is only for the die-hard trekkies out there.

Advantages: Better plot, acting and effects than the first two movies Disadvantages: May not appeal to the mass public
Star Trek began in the 60s as a cult series; slowly it began to become popular worldwide and eventually it spawned some movies. 'The Motion Picture' and 'The Wrath of Khan' were adequate movies that seemed to add too much 'Hollywood' to the theme and thus in my eyes were not successful representations of the original series.
Over the years Paramount produced many movies, learning from each as they went and improving the product; Star Trek must now ... ...had four movies; Star Wars had 4; Rocky had 5; Star Trek now has 9!
As the series progressed, the effects got better and the story lines improved thus enticing more and more people to watch the 'cult' show. As the movies improved they became more mainstream finding fans where none existed before. (My wife hates the series but loves the movies.).
This movie is almost a sequel to 'Wrath of Khan' and it is definately a good idea to see ...

Advantages: Slightly more cerebral than before Disadvantages: Slow, ponderous, lack of Spock.
...Out of the ten Star Trek films, where would you rank it?: 5th
The curse of the odd numbered films strikes with Star Trek III. Not a bad film in many respects it suffers in comparison to the two films in the series it is sandwiched by and, while well directed by Mr Spock himself, the script does ask you to suspend disbelief a little bit to much, even for a science fiction film. At the onset of the film the Enterprise is limping back to spacedock ... ...and is explored further in Star Trek IV. The series would quickly have run out of steam if they had just been sent on a different mission by the Federation in every film.
The need for Klingons in the films was obvious, they were the main bad guys in the series after all, but if I met this lot in outer space the only thing running would be a long standing joke about how bad they are. Christopher Lloyd was better known as a comedic actor and just ...

Advantages: Sci-fi with thought and emotion Disadvantages: Director Leonard Nimoy slightly over-reaches himself
...that make them, in the Star Trek universe, the most important beings around. The capacity for emotion is something that cannot be quantified or logically demonstrated. This is why Kirk was so eager to jump back into his spaceship and go back and get his friend and why Spock ends the film speaking the rather lovely words "I am and always shall be... your friend" but does not understand what they mean.
There is also a continuation of the 'Playing ... ...superior authority during his five-year Star Trek mission (documented in the television series), Kirk has long since being playing god: cheating death and granting life. In this movie, he plays God in the same way again, cheating death from the Klingons and the self-destructing Genesis planet, but he also plays god in another way. He pays for the soul of another with the life of his own son. Even though Kirk has no choice over whether his son lives ...

Advantages: Great for Trekkers Disadvantages: Boring for everyone else
Whilst 'The Wrath of Khan' put enough emphasis on characterisation and dialogue to produce a good movie, 'The Search for Spock' goes too far in this direction. The dialogue becomes tedious, the action slows to a virtual standstill, and the viewer is left wondering just exactly what is going on. Much of the film is dark, and I ended the film feeling quite depressed!
That said, this is definitely a film for the Vulcan fans out there: the focal point ...

Review of Star Trek 3 - The Search For Spock (DVD)
The third Star Trek outing sees Captain Kirk risking everything along with his crew to find and return Spock to the planet Vulcan so that his alive soul can be put in his dead body and he can be “resurrected”. Spock had been sent to the Genesis planet at the end of the previous film and the main story takes place on the planet. One good thing I like about the story is the way that Spock evolves in line with the newly created and developing Genesis ...

Advantages: Not badly made Disadvantages: Dead characters should stay dead
It seems compulsory in reviews of "Star Trek" films to complain about how old the cast look. It's a bit unfair - they are actually supposed to be older, the Federation not yet having invented anti-ageing. Spock is, for some vague reason, the exception and gets himself born again, only to end up old again by the end of the film anyway.
The film opens with the crew feeling a bit glum at the death of their emotionless pal, only to discover that he's ... ...flash Kirk et al hijack their own starship and set off to have him reincarnated, but sadly those pesky Klingons have other plans. The film's quite fun, but comes over as a desperate attempt to undo the damage the scriptwriters inflicted in the last film. The highlight must be Kirk's sudden and unprecedented swearing - quite a shock in a character who often seems half-Vulcan himself. ...

Advantages: a very entertaining film Disadvantages: gets a little boring
STORY
Arriving back at earth after the battle with Khan, Admiral James T Kirk reflects upon the death of his friend Spock. But a visit from Spocks father reveals that Mcoy has Spocks living spirit. Is there a chance of saving spocks memories by retrieving Spocks body from genesis. But a klingon bird of prey hears about genesis. And starfleet refuses to let kirk return. So what will kirk do and what will the klingons do?
VERDICT
A very good sequel ... ...film, repeating spocks death and funeral was great and the musical score was done fabulously by James Horner who did the nusic for the second film. The model shots for the enterprise , the bird of prey and space dock are just amazing. The story is a little confusing if you haven't seen the second film or if your not a trek fan but its an enjoyable film. But points are deducted because most of the scenes after space dock were on the bridge of the ...
