...to the cinema to see Star Trek 10 - Nemesis.
I do enjoy Star Trek, from the Next Generation onwards, but the trailers for this film didn't drag me in. I very nearly didn't go to see it. However, I do love my sci-fi, so I jumped into the deep end, for the sake of my sci-fi!
For those of you who don't follow Star Trek: The Next Generation, (I am sure that you are few and far between!!) I will tell you a little about the main characters. I think that ... ...you are a follower of Star Trek, you know these characters and feel almost part of the family. You can tell that the director and the writers are big Star Trek fans. They clearly understand and know the characters incredibly well.
Patrick Stewart (X-men) plays Jean-Luc with his usual panache. I think Patrick Stewart is a great actor and I would trust his character to save me from all sorts of horrifying space aliens, entities and people! He dealt ...

...here.
While the usual Star Trek people are behind the scenes on this, the last (possibly) Star Trek film ever, and someone called Stuart Baird has directed it, Brent Spiner, the chap who plays Data on TV and cinema screens worldwide, has a credit for story, if not producer as well. And therein lies some of the major flaws.
Background, first. The crew have just got a re-fitted Enterprise, due to problems encountered in previous films. Sound familiar? ... ...TV programmes for all recent Star Trek variants (leaving out the piffle of Enterprise) have managed really quite well to match galactic problems with personal ponderances, and sometimes the metaphysical, the films have struggled to match that pattern. And here the clunkiness with which the two meet is just awful.
Instead of a rollicking sci-fi adventure, or even tosh with whales, or even Malcolm McDowell over-acting, we get talk. That's you're lot ...

Advantages: When it works it's fun, exciting and entertaining Disadvantages: A virtually non-existent plot
And so the Star Trek movie franchise trundles on with the 10th instalment and 4th for the Next Generation cast; Nemesis.
I wasn’t really expecting too much from the movie having read quite a fair few negative reviews but what the hey! If you’re paying £10 a month for a UGC Unlimited card, you might as well use it!
And it turned out to be quite a good choice. Perhaps it was because my expectations were rock-bottom or perhaps I was in ... ...by a couple of assistant Star Trek writers in their coffee break and is in reality no more than a TV episode, stretched against it’s will into a 2 hour movie.
I got the impression it had something to do with a revolt in the senate of the Romulan Empire, led by the Remulian, Shinzon (Tom Hardy). Well I say Remulian, however there must be a reason that Shinzon doesn’t share the bulldog chewing a wasp look of his contemporaries but rather ...

...no means remarkable, an ‘average’ Star Trek adventure. This was more like a two-part TV episode than the possible glories of the full screen. So where does it fail to please?
Firstly, the characters are probably familiar to the majority of the audience – J-L Picard, Riker, Data, Worf, Dr Crusher, Cncllr Troy, and the now-visorless LaForge. The film does little to extend or deepen these characters (beyond the course of events of ... ...take the opportunity to explore any humour or banter between a crew who must be more familiar with each other than the members of the Surrey Wife Swappers Guild.
The plot is pretty repeatable too. Without exploring the storyline (yet), there’s the same-old singular ‘hooded claw’-type enemy (well-played BTW), supported by a evil henchman, a threat that will destroy The Federation (in this case Earth – I thought The Federation ...

Advantages: brilliant sci fi action Disadvantages: none in my view
I love star trek, I am a avid viewer of the TV series and my favourite one is Voyager but sadly they have never had a film devoted to them and the TV series has now finished but admiral Janeway (formerly captain of the USS Voyager) does appear in this film in a communication to captain Jean Luc Picard (The caption of the Enterprise E). To date I have seen this film twice and it is amazing, in the Star Trek films they try to appeal to non fans by ... ...to keep its usual Star Trek style and it looks amazing on the big screen and is one of the best Star Trek films I have ever seen, my favourite ever is Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home which was made in 1986 is in my view is the best ever.

Advantages: Time flys by if you are having fun. Disadvantages: Not much of a plot to it - no chance of losing it either!
I’ve loved Star Trek ever since I was a little girl when I used to watch the original series avidly with my father. Despite now being dated and sometimes very sexist I still watch the reruns of Captain Kirk and his crew in action although some of the episodes now make me chuckle. Any Trekkie who has knows the ridiculous third season episode “Spock’s Brain” will know what I mean.
The Next Generation series with the bald but sexy Patrick Stewart starring ... ...would have it, the latest Star Trek movie – “Nenemis” - was being shown. As none of the other films on offer at this particular cinema took my fancy, I elected to go and see it.
The film begins with scenes showing what appears to be a conference of the high command of Romulus. A pod like device opens and emits a new deadly type of radiation, which turns the delegates to stone in a process that seems to cause them great pain, before they then disintegrate ...

Advantages: Good plot, not like an ordinary episode, good graphics, keeps you interested Disadvantages: everything's really dark, the ending's quite abrupt and doesn't finish properly, too complicated for non-Trekkies
Being a great fan of Star Trek (though not a fanatic I haste to add), I was really looking forward to the new movie which I had heard so much about. I was nagging my sister and my friends to go with me, but none of them seemed to want to see it. Undeterred, I eventually persuaded them to come along on the condition that I paid for them. What a mistake that turned out to be!

Star Trek Nemesis I am not a trekkie (not that there's something wrong with trekkies, of course). I do, however, like Star Trek Voyager; mostly because of the gadgets, action and the occassional alien species :-) Anything before Voyager (e.g. Next generation, etc) probably because they just didn't seem high tech enough. Advantages: Effects, it is Star Trek, reaquaintance... Disadvantages: Hollywood feel...
The tenth movie adaptation Star Trek has beamed onto our cinema screen with a bit of a whimper if truth were told. Patrick Stewart who plays Captain Jean Luc Picard has been reported in saying that he is disappointed that it was not as big a box office hit as Lord of the Rings 2 or Harry Potter 2. But surely he did not expect this! I did not, but I was looking forward to seeing it, and even though it was given mediocre reviews, I was happy with the ... ...(as do the two previous Star Trek: The Next Generation film adaptations): the effects are better and the story is feature length. One of my favourite TV episodes is The Best Of Both Worlds (featuring the Borg) and compared to that, Nemesis is not as good. But it is not bad! I recommend it…

Nemesis. Star Trek X. The working title of the film immediately brought an air of importance and authority with it. The tenth film in a franchise that has become so huge, it could be descried as lore. Early plot leaks and internet spoilers revealed that this film would feature the Romulans as main villains, perhaps the perfect choice in the continuity of the Trek universe. A cunning, plotting, secretive people, whose quest for power is veiled beneath ... ...in the television series are few and far between, perfectly fitting their modus operandi. After 30 years, it seems fitting that the Romulans should finally come out of the shadows.
However, upon watching the film, not a lot is actually revealed about the Romulans that Trek fans didn’t already know. Only one great mystery is focused upon and expanded, that of the never before seen and seldom mentioned twin of Romulus, the home world of Remus. First ...

Advantages: It's a Star Trek Movie Disadvantages: Disapointing effort if this is the last movie
Being an avid Star Trek fan, I awaited the release of Nemesis with baited breath. If the rumour mill is correct, this is to be the last Next Generation film, so it was with some suprize the directing duties were given to someone with no knowledge or experience of the franchise, Stuart Baird. His direction was capable enough, but as this is maybe the last time on the big screen, I think a member of the cast such as Johnathan Frakes or LeVar Burton ... ...all.
Overall for a Star Trek fan, I found this story very weak and disappointing in as much as it left too many untidy endings, what happened to all the crew, as this was to be the last voyage surley more effort should have been made to see the crew disband and go their separate ways, maybe introduce Riker to his new ship, or the new crew for the Enterprise. To me it was a disappointing end to something which has run for so long and made me want ...

Advantages: familiarity with characters, chance to see favourites again, Disadvantages: formulaic, and a lot of "in-jokes" and it seemed to end too soon!
...to going to seethe latest Star Trek film, having been a keen watcher of all series since I was a small girl. Even the "original" series still gives a great deal of pleasure, with plastic rocks and shaky scenery! This film was not on release in cinemas for long before it was relagated to the smaller screens and finally off the schedule altogether, so we were lucky to find a cinema with it showing after only about 4 weeks of circulation.
I know that ... ...by someone coming "cold" to Star Trek. you need to know what the underlying background/history is to make sense of some of the comments/jokes. here it might be a disadvantage not to have seen any of the other films or the Next Generation series. Advantages: Emotional send-off for Mr. Data Disadvantages: Poor Film
This is the last ST film for the Generational crew. I must say that they got numbers 7 and 8 deadly right, but 9 and 10 were a waste of time. I don't know why everyone slated number seven so much because Capt James T. Kirk was in it and it had quite a good plot as well. It didn't go slowly for me and explored some interesting areas. So what's the plot about the tenth time around? Well, Mr. Picard has come up against someone who says he is his clone ... ...major head when the trustful, loyal Captain goes up against the enemy's spaceship which is, in all fairness to the script and the story, a great space battle, maybe even rivalling the one in ST VI. Perhaps the best space battle of the Treks. But where does the plot bog down? Basically, I wasn't interested in the story and the only villain that really posed menace in the ST films were the klingons and enjoyed following the Genesis trilogy with great ...

Advantages: Carries on Trek story Disadvantages: Getting sour?
Having not been a Star Trek fan for too long I have only ever really been into The Next Generation episodes and films.
The first one I saw was Generations and I was hooked from then on in.
Nemesis was one of those films which was either going to sink or swim and to the most part, I think it just about stayed afloat.
This is the second Trek film to have made me shed a tear.
Generations being the first, this followed in a more typical Next Gen ... ...is a good one, for Star Trek and Sci-Fi fans it is a bit of a let down. The rest of the Enterprise crew seemed to be in the shadows most of the time and if you don't know the story of trek then you might have a job getting to grips with what is actually happening.
The movie has a little humour, some of which will be over your head unless you are a trek fan, but all in all, a slightly disappointing movie ...
