... ...a treat and the 5.99 from Play.com with all the special features looks an absolute bargain. Animated films do not come much better than this - a production that will appeal as much to adults as to children. In terms of durability, I have enjoyed this as much if not more, during the repeat viewings. To balance this however, if action, comedy and slapstick are more to your taste with animation, I would not recommend this as something you would necessarily ...

...of the still virtually unknown Spirited Away - an Oscar-winning anime. It currently holds the record for the highest-grossing film in Japanese cinema history, taking the top-spot from another anime - 'Princess Mononoke', the film that single-handedly got me interested in the genre. Spirited Away has, on the whole, been very well-received - it's currently scaling the dizzy-heights of #41 in imdb.com's list of all-time greatest movies.
However, I ... ...feared that my anticipation for Spirited Away was so great that I could only end up disappointed. Thankfully, this wouldn't prove to be the case; having watched the film in my local theatre, it's safe to say it made quite an impact - I bought the American DVD from playUSA.com the next day.
Spirited Away centres on the exploits of Chihiro; an anti-social and pessimistic ten year-old girl who we first see lying across the backseat of her family car, ...

...very popular among anime fans. Spirited Away is another work of art that I'm sure most people will love.
I was VERY surprised to see movie posters for Spirited Away (I’m in London), as animes are rarely shown in movie theatres. You can often find a small selection of DVDs in most of the popular high-street entertainment shops like HMV and Virgin, and a wider selection in stores such as Forbidden Planet, with all the cult titles and merchandise, ... ...is as far as I know.
The story is about a young girl, Chihiro, (aged 8-13?). Anyway, the movie begins with Chihiro and her parents in the car on their way to their new house in the country side. The father, not sure on how to reach the new house decides on a route through a long wooded area.
When they finally reach the end, they do not find their new home, instead they find a strange looking building with a small dark tunnel entrance, with a statue ...

Spirited Away is about a young girl (Chihiro) who follows her parents into this deserted 'theme park' when night falls, strange creatures roam the place and Chihiro tries to leave but discover her parents have been turned into pigs for eating the spirit's food! She is then put to work at the bath house there so then she might be able to find a way to save her parents, with the help of the spirits who work there and Haku, a boy ... ...place she has been spirited away to.
The movie's graphics are well done, facial expressions are drawn in detail and the movement of the characters are fluid. Something fans of cartoons and anime will most definitely enjoy, I most certainly had fun watching it.
The music creates a tense atmosphere when it is needed or changes to happy and jovial when the humourous elements appear, I found it went well with the story and made it more interesting.

Advantages: An immensely enjoyable and gentle art film Disadvantages: Plot is a bit wacky, but doesn't matter that much
...Like most Japanese films, Spirited Away works at any number of levels.
The main plot lien is pretty straightforward; Chihiro is a ten year old girl in the 'real world' who is moving house with her parents, on the way, they get lost and find themselves transported to an enchanted land, where her parents are turned into pigs, and she ends up in a traditional Bathhouse, who's clients come from the spirit world. She faces many challenges, and through ... ...breaking the spell cast over her parents, and returns to 'real' life.
The bit in the middle, which takes up about 90% of the film is quite simply barking mad, however, so beautifully animated it hardly matters.
The 'look and feel' is certainly eastern, there's loads of cultural references, which although lost on most western viewers (myself included) simply enhance the integrity of the film.
What I especially liked was the typically pacifist approach ...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another magnificent fun film from the incredible Hayao Miyazaki.
Chihiro and her parents move to a new town and Chihiros new school.
They come across a deserted yet delicious smelling food stall and decide to tuck in but Chihiro has a bad feeling about the park and holds back. Night falls quickly and the park begins to light up by itself and dark shadowy spirits can be seen at each stall and by the time Chihiro returns to her parents they have changed into huge pigbeasts..
I don't go to the cinema that often, but I did go to see this in cinema. Advantages: Surreal to the extreme like no other film currently on the market Disadvantages: Japanese culture goes straight over the heads of many
...To describe the plot of Spirited Away it is obvious to everyone that this is a quest film. Within mere minutes of the films beginning our young hero finds herself whisked away to a foreign land in which the impossible is nothing more than implausible. This is when Chihiro's adventure begins.
Japanese folk tales play an immense part within this film with much of it being based loosely or entirely upon them. No sooner do you think you know one character ... ...a dragon, a bird and sinister monsters. All portrayed beautifully using Japanese artistry. CG may be the way forward in some respects however this film goes to show how there is still a place in the cinema for a film that is slightly obscure, surreal and traditional in origin. This film is a shining example of how now "obsolete" techniques can be used effectively to thrash a multitude of million dollar CG movies from the States.
Now as Chihiro embarks ...
