Advantages: Pi** take of Star Wars/Star Trek Disadvantages: As above I suppose
...For those who don't know Spaceballs is a sort of spoof comedy, mainly ripping the piss out of Star Wars and Star Trek. But if you are a fan of the latter, worry ye not it is done in good taste (har har, NOT!)
The evil Helmet (Rick Moranis) who by the way is meant to be Darth Vader, lead by his evil president Skroob. Well their planet called Spaceballs is running out of air, so they decide they will steal the air from another planet. In this case ... ...soon under attack from the Spaceballs lead by the evil Helmet, as they need to abduct her and hold her to ransome so they may obtain the planet Druidias air supply.

Advantages: A brilliant film, funny to watch no matter when Disadvantages: The Princess
Well Having got Justin Trousersnake out of the way, its time to get back onto another movie, and to follow on from Mars Attacks, I saw no better way than to watch Mel Brooks masterpiece!!! (Ok maybe not) Spaceballs. Mel Brooks is famous for his spoofs, with films such as Blazing Saddles and Robin Hood Men In Tights under his belt, however my favourite of his movies has to be this one.
As I said it is a spoof, and the main film's taken off during ... ...The Apes. The planet Spaceball is running out of fresh air and President Skroob (Mel Brooks) has decided drastic action must be taken to get fresh air for the people. He dispatches Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis), in Spaceball 1 to steal all the air from Planet Druidia.
Meanwhile on Planet Druidia, Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) is getting married to Prince Valium, the last prince in the universe. However she is not happy about this and along with her ...

...a spectacularly bad miss. However, Spaceballs the movie is a shining example of a spectaculrly good hit, and is by far his finest movie since Blazing Saddles. Spaceballs is yet another in the long catalogue of spoof movies which dear old Mel has churned out for us. This one is however also totally hilarious from start to finish. It spoofs all those hugely popular sci-fi movie around the time of its creation such as Star Wars, Alien and the rest and ... ...like this: The Spaceballs live on a planet with a rather nasty polluted atmosphere. They crave good air to survive and see this on the planet Druidia. Meanwhile the king of Druidia is trying to marry off his daughter princess Vespa to prince Vallium in order to improve a trading relationship. This all goes wrong because the Spaceballs, led by the evil Colonel Sandurz (George Wyner), President Skroob(Mel Brooks) and Lord Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) ...

This Mel Brook’s film is a brilliant spoof of sci-fi, in particular Star Wars. I have always liked Mel Brooks sense of humour and if Naked Gun is your thing, then you’ll love this. The story is based around an unlikely Han Solo style character who has to battle the evil Lord Helmet, brilliantly played by Rick Moranis. As with most of his films, Brook’s appears as a Yoda style character and you have other great characters such as Pizza the Hut and ...

Advantages: Some funny gags Disadvantages: Mostly predictable
...all these you can add Spaceballs which boldly goes into the science fiction genre and provides laughs at warp factor 5.
Brooks himself cannot resist the opportunity to appear in the film with a typical dastardly plan to steal the air/water/life from another planet called Druidia. The film pulls heavily on the Star Wars films and ridicules it mercifully and yet at the same time affectionately. Thus Darth Vader becomes Dark Helmet an obvious cue for ... ...as much a physical opposite to Vader as is possible. Instaed of being imbued with powers given by The Force they achieve strength through The Schwartz. I am not sure what The Schwartz is exactly, a spice, the colour black?
Bill Pullman plays Lone Starr as the antithesis of Luke Skywalker. The boyish enthusiasm for the fight against evil replaced by a lazy space slob. John Candy appears as his dog Barf. There is a story of sorts involving the thwarting ...

...ruler of the Spaceballs. The Spaceballs planet is running out of air, and their ransom for the return of Vespa is all the air on Druidia. Lone Starr is faced with a tough challenge in rescuing Vespa from Skroob's henchman Dark Helmet.
The Cast and Performances
Bill Paxton is our hero Lone Starr, inept space rogue flying around in a big van with Barf, a Mog (half man half dog), played here by John Candy. Mel Brooks pops up in a couple of cameos ... ...Darth Vader but with an overly large helmet! Daphne Zuniga plays Vespa, the princess in distress, and Joan Rivers lend her vocal talents to the robot maid Dot Matrix. All performances are very good, b ut everything is far too surreal to suggest excellent performances. Everyone does well.
My Opinion
This is a very well made film, with comedy coming every minute, but it is actually quite a beluevable and enjoyable plot as much as everything else. ...

Advantages: Funny, easy to watch Disadvantages: none
About:
Spaceballs is basically a spoof of Star Wars mixed with Star Trek and with a hint of Planet of the Apes. It was made in 1987 and directed by Mel Brooks who also directed other spoofs such as Blazing Saddles, Robin Hood: Men in Tights and Young Frankenstein. An interesting fact about it however is that George Lucas actually approved the script for Spaceballs as he was a fan of Mel Brooks. The Plot:
Planet Spaceball is in desperate need of ... ...and they actually watch the Spaceballs movie during the film in order to find out where someone is!
Opinion:
I love this film! It has a real cult following and it is easy to see why. The jokes are very funny and there are so many one liners that are not easily forgotten. The film is very easy to watch and the acting is good. Considering the type of film it is the cast of John Candy, Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman is very good. They all act very ...

Advantages: Candy's ears, the Winnebago, great Star Wars spoof at start...i could go on...and on.... Disadvantages: a couple of gags fall flat, soppy ending
Well, what can I add to the other two excellent opinions of this classic film? As is immediately obvious on watching the film,it is pure Mel Brooks, so whether you like the film or not depends entirely on whether you like absolute obvious slapstick, and blatant rip-offs and piss-takes on everyone's favourite movies. Now I have been brought up on the Carry-on genre, and was introduced at way too early an age by my beloved father to Blazing Saddles, ... ...burst into uproarious laughter at the slightest bum-gag. Therefore forgive me for being slightly biased but I adored this movie. Mel Brooks does his usual one or two or three cameos, prompting cheers from his mega-fans (me) each time, and there are plenty of star performances from stars and future stars. Bill Pullman actually acts sexy in his scruffy, bachelor-turned-enamoured Lone-Starr. It has been claimed that he is the Skywalker part in this, ...

What an abouslutely hilrious film! I am so suprised they weren't sued by Lucasfilm, but make sure you watch the Star Wars trilogy first, as everyone will be laughing except you (Except in the I'm surrounded by, bit, and the combing the desert bit, hilarious.)
What can I say? I've watched it only once, and I'm dieing to watch it again, the best film the bloke from Honey I Shrunk The Kids has ever done. Watch it just for his appearance as Dark Helmet. ...

Spaceballs is the ultimate Starwars spoof that's guaranteed to have you in stitches. Bill Pullman and John Candy are excellent as Lonestar and Barf (Han Solo and Chewy clones), and the gags just keep flowing. Rick Moranis is fabulous as a would be Darth Vader, but my personal favourite is Pizza the hut - he ate himself to death! For me, this is Mel Brooks' best film, its consistently funny with some great gags (like when they catch their stunt doubles!), ...

Advantages: Immensely funny film Disadvantages: Some people don't like spoofs....
...Lonestar, the Han Solo of Spaceballs along with Barff (John Candy), half man, half dog creature. Together in their space-going Winnebago they travel the stars as privateers.
However, the course of their star travel is interrupted by a Princess on the run, Vespa from the planet Druidia. Fleeing her arranged marriage with her trusty android, Dot Matrix.
The Princess is caught in the tractor beam of Lord Dark Helmet's ship.
Lord Dark Helmet, played ... ...Princess to hold for ransom to get the atmospheric shield of the planet Druidia so that they can steal the air from the planet...as planet Spaceball has no air left!
The plot is weird, as always for a Mel Brooks film, but the film is brilliant! Characters like Lord Dark Helmet and Yoghurt are just the tonic after a hard day! Pain free stress relief!
The comedy is brilliant and the actors do their jobs so well!
This isn't just a Star Wars parody ...

Advantages: *VERY* funny film by Mel Brooks; need i say anymore?! Disadvantages: Certain type of humour - appeals to most, not all
The film is a cinematic masterpiece; that is, of taking the piss out of nearly every single sci-fi film of its time!
When i first watched this film aged 12, i found it very funny, as i got older i understood more and more jokes in the film; which just goes to show how this film works on many different levels.
Space Balls is most definately a 'must-have' for anyone who has a passing interest in Sci-fi films, it is also a must for anyone looking ... ...had no shame in saying that i have watched possibly over 100 times, each year spotting a different joke - it is a wonderful film.
If i were to critically analyse it, i would say that, possibly the film may be a bit outdated now, - it was filmed in the '80s and subsequently looks a bit dated in a number of ways. The acting is not perfect by any means, although, it doesnt matter as it adds to the quirky hilarious nature of the film!
The way Mel Brooks ...

Advantages: Spoof of any Sci Fi film you care to mention Disadvantages: erm...no, sorry , cant think of any
Just where do you start with a Mel Brooks Classic. It's absolutley hilarious, the acting is great, the sets are superb...look just go out and buy it now, ok?
what, you need more...well ok then...
You really don't have to be a huge fan of Star Was/Trek/whatever to get all the jokes - General knowledge is sufficient.
In the same vein as Mel Brokk's other films, the humour is often very silly, vergingo ong the riduculous at times, but it is always ... ...is fantastic as Dark Helmet, and John Candy is often underrated as Barf, the half man half dog sidekickMel Brooks' part (Yogurt)is excellent, and casting Joan Rivers as the voice of the robot Dot Matrix is inspired.
