Advantages: Beautifully realised, the best Disney Villain Ever, a magnificent artistic vision with a fabulous score, nominated for an Oscar Disadvantages: some scary parts
I re-watched Sleeping Beauty this weekend for the first time in years doing some research for our annual Christmas pantomime. As I sat with my mug of coffee in my hands, not taking my eyes off the screen, I was whisked away to the Land of Make Believe ...
** INTRODUCTION **
This is a film that marks the end of the Disney classic era. Released in 1959, it was the culmination of Disney's animation art during its classic phase. Taking seven years ... ...go too far into it. Sleeping Beauty, based on the classic fairytale, follows the basic outlines of the story. We open with the opening storybook device. A child named Aurora has been born to the king and queen, and a holiday proclaimed. Young Prince Phillip is betrothed to the newborn. The three good fairies, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather, bestow upon the child gifts of beauty and song. As Merryweather starts to give the child her gift, Maleficent ...

Advantages: Its classic Disadvantages: How can there be?
Walt Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" (1959) was billed as the ultimate animated film. This is a heavy claim to make, but after viewing the film, it is one well deserved. (Side note--I hate how Disney films are categorized as "children's". Walt himself has said that he never made films primarily for children. I shall continue to defend him and his original vision forever.)
"Sleeping Beauty" is a milestone of a Disney film and several elements--some familiar, ... ...classic that it is. Let's examine these separately, shall we? PLOT
The plot of the film is easily understood and quite engaging. A King and Queen of a medieval kingdom finally are blessed with the birth of their only child, a daughter whom they christen Aurora. Everyone in the kingdom comes to the castle to celebrate the birth and the Three Good Fairies (Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather) each bestow a special gift upon her. Yet one evil fairy, Maleficent, ...

Advantages: Classic disney Disadvantages: Predictable
This was one of my favourite films when I was younger, and although it is quite an old disney film, it is still good.
The story goes as follows (though I won't give it all away). There is a beautiful princess born who is cursed at birth by an evil fairy. There are some good fairies who decide to take her away so that she will be safe. They look after her and she is unaware that she is a princess.
Getting near to the time when she will be succeptable ... ...meets a man who she falls in love with (conveniently he is the handsome prince but she doesn't know that).
Basically the film pretty much follows the fairy tale in that she falls aslepp after pricking her finger and it is up to the prince to save her. You will have to watch the film to see if he does or not!
I did like the film when I was younger (and more easily impressed) and it is a classic, but it really is quite predictable, you know then ...

Advantages: A timeless classic Disadvantages: It's a fairytale
Sleeping Beauty is just one of the many cartoons from Walt Disney. It is timeless. I remember I watched it when I was a little girl. The story still warms my heart and I have no hesitation recommending this cartoon. After all, I would still watch it, yes, even now! Many little girls from this generation are still watching it. It is all in all a fairytale that touches most children's hearts. It can also be considered as a family film as adults and ... ...cartoons have really commendable soundtracks. Sleeping Beauty is not an exception. The theme song is very nice.
However, too many of these fairytales can put a lot of romantic nonsense in children especially little girls. They grow up still believing in the knight in shining armor fairytales. may cause them to be a little out of touch with reality, when they hit the real world.
Nevertheless, even adults need to relax a little. Since cartoons are ...

Advantages: Simply Disney Disadvantages: You may wear the DVD out.
When someone says Sleeping Beauty my first thought is the ballet. I saw the Royal Ballet perform Sleeping Beauty a few years ago at the ENO whilst the ROH was being refurbished and it was magical. I completly forgot Disneys classic, although I must have watched it a hundred times as a child, how soon we forget but how lovely to discover again.
So how does a cartoon compare to to the Ballet, quite simply it doesn't and shouldn't.
In time honoured ... ...elements you'd expect. Fantastic score which you just can't help singing along to, loveable characters and sinister characters. The story is told with all the flair and artistry one comes to not only expect but is an absolute must from Disney.
Young or old this is a film that could quite easily keep you entertained for an hour or so, sit the kids down and you shouldn't here a peep from them.
If you want to watch a performance see a Ballet, but ...

Advantages: The faires and the dress! Funny! Disadvantages: The older you get, the more boring it becomes
Sleeping Beauty is yet another Disney classic. It about a princess (who doesn't know she is one), and meets a prince (she doesn't know that he's one) in a forest on her 16th birthday. Later, she finds out that she is a princess and has been betrothed to a prince. She doesn't want to be however, she wants to be with the guy she met in a forest. This movie is quite boring, as you can probably tell from my summary of the film. I enjoyed it when I was ...

Sleeping beauty is a really good classic cartoon that the whole family loves to watch all of the time.
Its about this princess who was born in to a loving family, but this evil witch came along and put a curse on this new born baby and said that one day she would prick her finger and go in to a deep sleep as she turned 18. The whole of the palace were very shocked about this and the king and queen didnt want any thing to happen to their daughter ... ...far away to live. She was protected and cared for by 3 good fairys who never let her knew that she was a princess and just treated her normally. One day when she was much younger she would go for walks and play with the animals who all loved her so much. When one day she seen this boy who was a prince in the woods and she fell deeply in love with him as that is what she had been dreaming of all of her life. But she didnt know she was a princess so ...

Advantages: Archetypal Disney Disadvantages: May leave discerning films viewers wincing
Beauty and the Beast. Undoubtably a classic, and yet one that I was irritated to have to sit through with my younger cousins at the behest of my Mother and Auntie while they conveniently enough sat and talked in the next room. Such is the way that with such a specialist film, those that fall outside the target audience may wish they hadn't bought their children that particular Disney Film. As much as I denigrate the watchability, I was a teenage ... ...quality this film fails in spectacularly, and yet, stunning brush work, and attention to detial, as well as a truly classic storyline make up for its shortcomings. You may be sitting watching the film wishing you could be somewhere else, but take heart in the fact that younger girls will treasure the memory of sharing something so unique with their parents. Enjoy the fact that you are giving something priceless to your daughter, and hey, if you start ...
