Advantages Advantages Unique visual style, violent, bloody and full of dark humour

Disadvantages Disadvantages That unique style can be a little distracting at first

Walk down the right back alley in Sin City and you can find anything. You may even find a film that was very close to never getting made. Frank Miller, the author if the "Sin City" series of graphic novels this film was based on, is not a fan of Hollywood and promised that he would never sell the film rights to his graphic novels. This gave director Robert Rodriguez a bit of a problem, as he was a huge fan of the "Sin City" series and really wanted to turn them into a film. Following the huge success of his "Mariachi" and "Spy Kids" trilogies, Rodriguez is someone who is used to getting what ... more

Advantages Advantages Great Story and Acting

Disadvantages Disadvantages A Bit Gory for Some

Sin City is one of those films that I heard of and really wanted to go and see at the cinema but because it was technically a black and white film, nobody would come with me. Sad but true. Anyway I bought it the day it came out on DVD and let me tell you I was not disappointed. ----- What is it about and who stars in it? Reading from the back of the box. Based on Frank Miller's series of edgy graphic novels, co-directors Miller and Robert Rodriguez deliver an amazing ensemble cast in the coolest movie of the year! Bruce Willis stars as Hartigan, a cop with a vow to protect a stripper, Nancy ... more

    * PICTURE THIS... * Feeling sinful? I tuned into the BBC2 premiere of 2005's Sin City tonight with no aspirations for what the film should be like or for what the storyline should be, infact the only thing I knew about the film was that it was a pretty big deal and featured a very artistic taste of cinematography that I didn't think I would take to.. but more on that later on. I felt that the amount of promotion going into this premiere, and the fact that it couldn't make it on to a lot on BBC1 wasn't going to bode well, but having just finished my daily dose of Big Brother it was time to ... more

Advantages Advantages Great visuals, fantastic performances, very engrossing

Disadvantages Disadvantages May be too violent for some

Sin City is just that. A city of sin. Most of the police are corrupt and those that aren't have a low life expectancy. Mercenaries come here, knowing there's bound to be someone who'll give them a job. Politicians run the mob. The clergy commit outrageous acts and get away with it. A portion of the town is run with an iron first by the prostitutes, each of whom is an expert with one or more weapons. Truly good people are thin on the ground. It's a fascinating place. If you have a strong stomach it's well worth checking out. Sin City the film is based on a number of graphic novels by Frank ... more

Advantages Advantages Great cast and a technological marvel

Disadvantages Disadvantages The portrayal of women, excessive violence and plotlines that occasionally drag

Marv, the biggest, ugliest thug in Sin City goes on a rampage of revenge after the beautiful woman he's sleeping next to is murdered and he's framed for the killing. Chancer Dwight inadvertently starts a turf war by trying to protect the prostitutes that run the Old Town and good cop Hartigan is sent down the river after he takes down a corrupt senator's son who's responsible for kidnapping little Nancy Callahan. But when he gets out of prison he discovers Nancy's all grown up and in serious danger. There was a time when comic book adaptations were primary coloured kid-friendly superhero tales ... more

    Advantages Advantages Impressive visual style

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Amoral and boring

Looking at the amount of praise this film has received, I felt a need to dissect what I found to be an over the top, poorly conceived and adapted, clichéd, amoral, and fairly tedious film, which completely misuses the medium of film. Sin City is an adaptation of Frank Miller's comics (sorry, graphic novels) of the same name. It follows the stories of three people who live in the fictional town that seems to have degraded beyond redemption. Most interesting is that the entire film was shot against green screens, inserting CGI backgrounds into every shot. It is also shot mostly in black and ... more

Advantages Advantages Fantastic looking, great plot, intersting characters

Disadvantages Disadvantages ultra-violence may put off some

With its glossy comic-book appearance, ultra-violence and fast paced action, Sin City is a a modern classic, and certainly one of the best neo-noir films ever. Robert Rodriguez not so much adapts from Frank Miller's comic books of the same name, as directly transfer them to the big screen. A transition made with ease and one that works incredibly well. Sin City is set in Basin City, a gritty place with a dark underbelly of violence, police corruption and murder and is based on four of Frank Miller's comic book stories, those being; 'That Yellow Bastard', 'The Big Fat Kill', 'The Customer is ... more

5 Stars There's no justice... without sin... Review with images 25/04/2007
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages It is a cinematographic revolution, the reinvention of film noir…

    Disadvantages Disadvantages For me, none.

Between love and hate, “Sin City” is a movie that divided the public and the media’s opinion all around the world (why??!)… I personally just love it, I love the first, and I’m almost sure I’ll love the second… The doors of (Ba)Sin City are the entrance for a distorted and violent world, with criminal politicians, corrupt cops and beautiful, I mean, beautiful women. A world with a natural hate for females, chauvinist and sexist, where the way these girls dress leaves little space for your imagination (not that you’re not a creative person, but they’re really only half dressed…), and they don’t ... more

    Advantages Advantages Acting, effects, plot

Disadvantages Disadvantages lack of special features

2005 brought with it many great movies and many pretty crap movies but one of the best has to be Sin City. Boasting a cast list of over a dozen 'A' list stars and the tagline, "Walk down the right back alley in Sin City and you can find anything" it was known this was a movie not to be missed. Hearing many mixed reviews about this film I decided not to go to the cinema to see it but wait until Katy bought it on DVD. So when she got it we sat down and watched two hours of pure brilliance. Sin City has also brought around a generation of adapting graphic novels. Sin City had many stories all ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can Become Tiresome, Inconsistent Pace

Taken from the successful comic books penned by Frank Miller (Elektra) this tells three gritty stories about lost souls, love, grief and pain in the city of the damned… Sin City grips you like a vice from the understated, beautiful opening to the shocking finale, throughout it remain constantly imaginative and engagingly gripping with expert flourishes of style mixed with breathtaking visuals and solid performances from its all star cast. Each story that is folded into this piece is unique, brutal and violent with a strong narrative and driving focus. It is true that two of the tales are far ... more
