Well Shrek doesn’t say it , but he certainly implies it, pointing at Lord Farquad’s rather large palace / castle , and then quipping “to you think he’s over compensating for something?” to Donkey , his companion throughout this superb cartoon. ...I saw the ogre called Shrek I realised it could be a good comedy. The storyline is quite complex but my 12 year old daughter had no problem following the plot. It begins with shots of fairytale characters such as the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs being sold and taken to a camp to be trained. The camp is situated on Shrek's land the Swamp. Indignant, Shrek and his pestering donkey march off to king in an attempt to evict the characters off his land.

In true fairytale style they fall in love but the princess has a secret, every night she turns into an ugly ogre like Shrek. This spell can only be cured by her true love's kiss.
However Fiona changes her mind about Shrek and decides to marry the king. The wedding scene begins and the bride and groom ...

Fortunately he doesn't have to worry about this in his own lair - until one day an invasion of fairy tale characters set up home at his swamp! Shrek was voiced by Mike Myers and is meant to be Scottish, which would work well if he didn’t lurch horribly between Scottish, English and American. Advantages: The film works for everyone - especially if you're one of those people who is able to pick up even the slightest reference to other films. Disadvantages: Marketed at kids, so not as dark as it probably deserved to be.
...wrapped in a kiddie shell, Shrek is one film that everyone will love. For the kids, you have the obvious donkey-falling-out-of-the-sky, ugly-ogre-making-smells kind of slapstick, but scratch just a little beneath the surface, and you will discover so much more, including parodies of just about every fairy tale and Disney film you can think of (Baby bear: "My cage is too small!" See it; you'll know what I mean). The soundtrack, far from being the ... ...and the running gag of Shrek threatening Donkey every time he even thinks about singing is great.
As for the animation? Well, it's of the high standard that we have come to expect from computer-animated films, and the quality seems to show no sign of slowing up. Particularly impressive were the fire and lava effects, although I think they need to be seen at the cinema to be best appreciated.
Casting is superb, with the only slight glitch for me ...
