Star Shrek

Advantages: its look great and its very funny
Disadvantages: The Donkey is a wee bit annoying...but not too much

...story of our eponymous hero, Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers), a very large, very green Ogre, who speaks with a soft Scottish burr, with some disgusting table habits and an unusual supply of toilet-paper who, apart from having to see off the occassional posse of drunken villagers looking to kill him, is as happy as, well, an Ogre in mud, in his swamp home. That is until the local stunted nobleman, Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow), decrees that all the fairy-tale ...
...dragon guarded tower prison. Inadvertently, Shrek wins the tournament and agrees to go quest and rescue the lovely Princess Fiona, along with that damn donkey. It is customary at this point to say I shant spoil the story by telling you what happens next, and I shant, for who am I to toy with tradition. Luckily the makers of the fantastic film had no such qualms about toying with tradition and as a result we get this wonderfully irreverent, skewed ...

Great FX good film

Advantages: Murphy, FX
Disadvantages: Not too many

...At times, Shrek (from Spielberg’s Dreamworks corporation) borders on that tipple over into being mere artefact, but thankfully never quite manages it. The action, the vocal theatrics of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, John Lithgow and Cameron Diaz and the punning satire on every nursery rhyme and/or panto you’ve ever seen see to that and the whole is a huge success, both with audiences and on the quality meter. The plot is a typical fairy story type thing, ...
...twist in the tale, but Shrek has a lot more plus marks than crosses, including the over the top motormouth gymnastics of Murphy as Donkey, the sheer vastness of it all, the send up of the fairy tale characters (including a spiky Gingerbread Man) and a deep and abiding sense of fun. The opening scenes are probably the best of the film, clueing us in on exactly how foul ogres are, but are never really developed and smack of being an opportunistic candidate ...

The story is about an ogre named Shrek (now you wouldn’t have guessed that would you?) who lives all alone in his swamp happily bathing in mud and minding his own business, until Donkey arrives and seeks sanctuary from the evil Lord Farquaar who is attempting to rid the world of fairy tale people. Advantages: Great animation, good storyline, great humour
Disadvantages: None really

Shrek tells the animated tale of an ogre (Mike Myers) who, whilst going about his own business living in the swamp, is inhabited by all manner of fairy tale "things" that have been sent by Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow). To get rid of his new neighbours, Shrek has to rescue Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) and defeat the fire-breathing dragon but on the way, unexpected twists and turns give the whole story a Disney-esque feeling and leave you with that ...
...the best seen on-screen yet and for sequences like the ogre bathing in mud, the creators actually had a human doing the same thing so they could note key things about the sequence. Duloc is the village where the film is set and all the characters fit together so well it's hard to believe that they never actually met during filming and all recorded their parts separately. The film is filled with tongue-in-cheek humour and pokes fun at some of the ...

I want a talking Donkey

Advantages: Wonderful to look at, proper funny, Murphy on top form
Disadvantages: Not as funny as I expected, dodgy scottish accent

Shrek the Ogre (Mike Myers) lives alone in his swamp in the woods. He seems quite happy, scaring off the local villagers when they come brandishing pitchforks and the like an doing what Ogres do best. So when he bumps into Donkey (Eddie Murphey) and saves him from some of the local city’s guards, he isn’t to impressed when Donkey decides to come and stay with him. Advantages: Wonderfully funny romantic comedy
Disadvantages: Un-polished in certain areas

...funny tale of adventure, as Shrek - a mis-understood ogre, voiced by Mike Myers - undertakes a quest to rescue the Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), in return for the deeds to his swamp. I don't want to give away much more of the plot, and indeed there isn't much more to the plot anyway. This is in many ways a classic fairy tale, and the resulting plot is quite simple. However, around the plot are some truly brilliant moments. Shrek's faithful sidekick ...
...refusing to talk under torture, Shrek farting in the bath, a quick rip-off from 'The Matrix', etc. It gives something for the adults to laugh at as well as the kids. The soundtrack is also very good, with songs liberally interspersed throughout the film, and Mike Myers gives Shrek a great Scottish accent that doesn't sound fake for once. The only quibble I have is that words were sometimes lost, especially as songs just kicked into the middle of ...

Funniest animation since Toy Story

Advantages: very funny, good characters

When I first heard about Shrek I was unsure whether I would enjoy it or not because it looked as if it was aimed at a younger age group. I eventually came to the situation where I could watch it and make up my own mind. I was pleasantly surprised. The story is about an ogre called Shrek (voice of Mike Myers) who lives in a swamp. The problem is that the nasty Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) rids his kingdom of fairytale people and sends them to Shreks ...

Contained in the plot are a lot of jokes that young kids would laugh at but wouldn’t get the real meaning. This makes ...

...been to see the movie Shrek then you will know that the answer is the lovable, unlikely hero of Dreamworks productions current hit movie. Shreks voiceover is done by comic genius Mike Myers (Wayne's World, Austin Powers) and was originally done in an American accent but Myers thought it would be more funny in a light Scottish accent, which I have to say fitted perfectly with the character. Although Shrek is a grumpy, filthy slob, his peaceful swamp ...

However as per usual with any love story, there are some misunderstandings before they finally get together and a particularly nice twist at the end for anyone who gets annoyed that it is only the beautiful girls who get their man. Shrek's a Scream

Advantages: Humour, romance and the best special effects ever!
Disadvantages: Mike Myers' terrible accent

...likely to see this year, Shrek is a classic children’s movie and a hilarious, cleverly written feature for ALL the family. True, the plot is a little unorthodox, the characters not as beautiful as the Disney counterparts and Mike Myers’ Scottish accent more than a little dodgy, but Shrek is a film you will want to see over and over again. This film is supposed to be the beginning of the end for Disney films, as finally Dreamworks have ...

Childrens comedy, with computer generated animation. Produced by the team that brought you Antz. Stars John Lithgow, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Mike Myers. Certificate U with run time of approx 85 minutes. Released across UK on 29th June 2001 Plot: The plot in itself is very uncomplicated. Overall: Well it is funny, and the comedy works for both children and adults. I watched this film with my six year ...

Shrek...what a load of drokking shazbot

Advantages: It's only 90 minutes long!
Disadvantages: The last 89 minutes!

...let’s start with that title. Shrek sounds to me like a 70's euphemism used by entertainment media as a substitute for real swearing. The comic 2000A.D. had its lead character, Judge Dredd, say "Drokk", and Robin Williams’ Mork uttered the thoroughly filthy (at least on Ork) "Shazbot!" on frequent occasions. This would seem consistent to me as my first thought on leaving the cinema after seeing this movie was, Shrek! What a load of drokking ...

Shrek marches into the castle unaware of a tournament taking place to find Farquaad’s champion, so his Lordship can use him to rescue a beautiful Princess locked-up in a tower and guarded by a fierce dragon. He intends to make her his bride so that he can rightfully become King. Shrek unintentionally becomes his champion and under threat of what appears to be about one thousand archers agrees to go on the quest. Will ...

...Woody Allen does Disney then Shrek is most certainly what would have happened if a young Mel Brookes would have had the chance. Gone is (most of) the schmaltz of Disney and the midlife crisis of Antz and in its place is a riproaring, vibrant melee of satire, bottom gags and pratfalls which offers something for all members of the family and, particularly, the grown ups.
